congrats on breaking the MLB single season hits record.  Passing George Sisler who previously held the record with 257 hits.

Not to downplay Ichiro's accomplishment, because hitting over 250 in a season is a feat in itself, but in my book Sisler still has the record.

Please explain the rational behind saying Sisler still has the record?? From all I've heard, the pitching is far supiror today than it was then making it alot harder to hit in the majors. I'm lost.

shallow is talking about the fact sisler did it in less games.  But you gotta understand baseball has evolved.  You had a lot less teams than so you would see the same pitcher more in a season an knew better how is stuff was.  Gloves were also a lot smaller.  With todays gloves its a lot easier to rob somebody of a base hit.

With out going into the technicalities of what was harder, the fact remains that at the end of 154 games Sisler had 257 hits. Ichiro had less hits after 154 games. Who is to say that that Sisler wouldn't have hit a whole lot more if he played another 8 games?

Everybody always says how it was easier back then, and how it's a lot harder now, but we cannot prove that one way or another. If Ruth or Cobb were to play today I think they'd still dominate the league. Sure one could argue that the the feilding and pitching has evolved to the point that the two eras cannot be compareed, and even though I disagree with that, I could agree for arguments sake and say that hitting has evolved since then. By the logic of this evolution where the feilding and pitching have advanced, one could also argue that the hitting has adavanced. This could mean many things; the hitting exercises, the practice time, and coaching, the much better bats, and batting gloves, the swing, and so on. Not to mention the fact that today's players have an entire off season to study the game and their oppononents when the old day's players had to bag groceries and work construction, not having the luxury or the technology to watch tapes of other teams and players if they wanted to.

So even if a 1920 George Sisler wouldn't be able to hit 257 in today's game, and a 2004 Ichiro could hit over 300 in the old days. I think a George Sisler growing up today would grow into a 257 hits in 154 games hitter, and an Ichiro growing up in the old days would not be able to hit what George hit in 1920.

Records are only numbers to make someone look better. Ty Cobb is still the best hitter of all time, and Babe Ruth is still the best Home run hitter of all time.
