I didn't even know the finals were today, I havent seen any of the games, but it's good that Canada won.

I hate Canadian style hockey. I always cheer for the Russians because they play a better game. I'm a Canadian but I can't stand it when I see my fellow countrymen throw skill out the window for checking and violence. You saw the Russian frustration. In the beginning most tried their best not to get too physical but by the end they got fed up with it. My point of view started with the Summit Series of '72 when I saw a group of skilled amateurs make a allstar team of proffesionals look silly in their own country. Then Canada had to go and play like babies, using their fists and shoulders more than their sticks. They threw goons like Bobby Clarke out there only to create trouble. The only he used his stick was to take the best Russian out with a violent slash to the knee. Now the whole game is like this, even the Russians fall victim to it, and they invented the better way of playing. Strength and ignorance takes the place of skill. Canadians wonder why Hockey gets no regard inthe states and makes no real money. All the biggest crossover staers like Gretzky and Lemieux drifted as far away from rough housing as possible. Mario did it more but he was a never as big as Wayne popularity wise.

The American sports fan sees it as primitive. The point of the game is to get the puck in the net, not use force to knock people over. It works in Football because the point is to get though everyone while staying up and make it to the other side, and blatant cheap shots don't happen like they do in Hockey. If Basketball had checking it would have went nowhere. When American fans see a guy forget the puck just to see the guy hit the opposing player for good measure they look down upon it, and so do I. It scarifices the integrity of the game and throws skill out the window. If I had a nickel for every OHL player that doesn't make it to the league because he isn't big or agressive enough but has more skill than 90% of the others, I'd retire with a fortune. What the NHL owners need to do right now is pack up and leave. Start a new league with skill over strength, take away body checking, and ban wild shots (or atleast set up a n honour code), take the helmets off (except the goalie) and tone down the equipment. This would make it a more exciting fast pace game with higher scoring and highlights that have nothing to do with a guy getting a concussion or losing teeth. Only the best skilled players would qualify and we'd bring a little respect to the game I love. It's not just that I think this a better, it's that I think it would work better financially and ratings wise.

did you watch the russia u.s. semi final game, i'm guessing not because the lack of class and complete ignorence russia showed in the last find minutes of the game totally goes against everything you just said.

now as for the hitting part and russia gettting frustrated, of course they did, do you watch european hockey, they can't hit, PUSSIES...hitting is a big part of the game and always has been, now i feel sorry for you, honestly i do, i'm even gonna take it that you never played hockey because i remember back when i played if you got hit hard cleanly and got knocked on your ass you respected the guy who caught you with your head down. then you were taught the lesson to keep your head up when skating with the puck.

canada really had no cheap shots, they hit whoever had the puck, knocked their ass off the puck and got every team off their game...i honestly can't believe you're canadian talking like this, it has totally puzzled me...anyway i'm getting off topic...GO CANADA

can't wait for 2006 when we get to defend the junior title and the womens and mens olympic gold medals.

I clearly acknoledged that the current Rusian game is no better than the Canadian one. They show signs of trying to get back to their roots but never fully can and won't because of the way the game has changed. The game is a joke now and so is the NHL. I love hockey and I played Hockey. I never minded getting hit because I'm not a whiner, but I would never hit anyone if the puck was there, because I'd go to the puck. I'd like to say that passion for the essence of the game was what made me stop but it was more about me being not good enough. There are some incredibly talented platers out there. Light years better than Domi and Tucker but they don't get a chance because they can't play this inferior style. America doesn't hate Hockey because it's Canadian, they hate it because it's a primitive sport. It needs to change for the sake of viewers and the business. Can you imagine how good a game full of guys that play like Gretzkey instead of Stevens would be?

Hockey died the second Clarke took out Kharlamov and the stupid Canadian fans didn't care that the tournament was being compromised. Of course Russia was going to lose after losing their best player. Hockey came back with Wayne Gretzky  (that's only because the Russian game helped make the Canadian game better, watch 60s tapes and see how horrible the passing was) and when he was finished so was the game. This bullshit hit hit hit, no skill no skill no skill approach is the reason New Jersey has been so dominant and the reason no one watches the game. Canadians only like it this way because they are conditioned too. The fact that the US hates it gives reason Canada to love it. Well that isn't good enough for me.


I just want to make clear once again that I am not Russian and have no ties to Russia, but I will not blindly support a style of game I have no respect for. Just like I'm not Muslim and still don't support anything Bush does overseas.

Only person who'd watch that is you  Maybe a few in the beginning,but it wont go far. That's the problem with AMERICAN SPORTS. High numbers = good game. Whats wrong with the gritty 1-2 games int he NHL in the playoffs? THose games I LOVE. Guy's going all out toi win it for hte team, making clean hits. That's why I love hockey, NO easy way out.

It's our game, and I fuckin love it. If you change the game by taking away the red line, tag up offsides and NO-Touch icings (this would save a lot defencemen asses)..then im ok. But Radically change the game i've grown to love since i was 6..oh hell no.

It's our game. Everyone can have their style, you can like one over the other. You wanna go watch the Russian style, go to Russia (or russian TV) and watch their league games...the reason they don't hit as often as US is cause the fuckin ICE surface IS HUGE. That doesn't even help the scoring sometimes either. SO you got a boring open ice 1-1 game with no hitting...WOW! I hope this never happens in the NHL. That's why you got players like Malkin trying to dance past Canadian defencemen and they JUST PUMBLE them to the ground. Canadian/American/Swedish and Finnish players have all adapted to the hitting style. Thats why you have players like Foresberg, Bertuzzi, Hull...big guys with a lot of skill.

Nobody would watch but me? That's the current problem; nobody watches. The Stanley Cup playoffs never get any more than a couple million veiwers. As opposed to 20 millionthat watch baseball World Series, 15 that watch Basketball finals, and 30 to 40 million that watch the Superbowl. If you take the best players in the world (skill wise) put them in a safe environment with players as good, and open up the game, people who don't watch now will love it.  Fans of sports in genberal will be drawn in by the talent, just like they were with Gretzky. There are guys out there who just can't do it because of the danger the games has now, and they protect themselves so much they can't perform the theatrics the common fan would love. You really don't think it could work if the game was played that way? Low scoring games aren't a problem in Football, and Soccer is the biggest sport in the world.

I respect your opinion and have no problem with you liking the hitting. Unless you cheered Clarke for hitting Kharlamov. That angered me as a Canadian fan. It showed me that we eeded to play dirty to beat a bunch of amateurs. I feel no pride from watching the Summit Series.

I wouldn't move to Russia because they play like us now, and I wouldn't be able to watch the NFL. A sport that has hitting but never glorifies uncalled for hits. If you hit a guy with the ball you get scorned, noit put on a highlight reel and praised.

Nice post AlerG, I couldn't have said it better myself homie. And Shallow, I got NO idea what the fuck your talkin about when your goin on about canada's physical style getting the Russian's upset?. Dude OF COURSE they were frustrated,because they couldn't do anything about it and they knew they'd lose the game. Also, Canada played, and almost alyways plays clean, they go for the hit if it's there, but you won't see them slashing away or throwin spears like those Russian bitches.

I wasn't talking about current Russian Hockey. I was talking about original Russian Hockey. I don't like checking in Hockey, dirty or clean, because it ultimately cheapens the game. GMs start looking for big strong uys who can't play that well instead of great players who can't check that well. If the NHL had all the skilled players they don't get because they want the big checkers the league would be light years better.

Shallow, I've never watched the summit series, only that famous 2 minutes when Henderson scored that goal. I never saw the hit? You gotta remember in the 70's the Red Army was feared, the wholle USSR was something to be scared of. And a country like Canada, not backing down, and taking it to them..was somthing to be proud of 

Gretzky got hit  mario got hit  ..the game is the same as it was in the 80's...its just the goalie pads are bigger now and the net moved up..i think they should reduce both.

I don't care how many people watch the NHL, or the ratings and stuff. Im a fan of HOCKEY, and I love to see it. If the americans don't, want to watch the Stanley Cup Finals, thats ok. I like All-star games cause their's enver hitting, and they never take things seriousily. But with no hitting, you're going to eliminate passing..i gurantee it. All them puck handlers who don't like to pass, wont..so thats gonna get rid of role players.
