If Snoop didn't sign with No Limit....
« on: April 24, 2002, 06:40:23 PM »
I was looking for a Snoop article on MTV's website for a paper I'm writing, and I found a feature they did on him right after he signed with No Limit, and I was reading it, and something caught my eye:

JOHN: How...how did it come about? When did you first meet (Master) P and did you guys...were you guys talking about this possibility of a change for a long time before it actually happened?

SNOOP: Well I met P from uh...just coming up from Priority Records 'cause I have a lot of love for Priority Records. You know I would always be up there dealing with Mac 10 or just the people up there I knew You know we would see each other, me and P and we'd just holler, "what's happening, what's up?' And so I got at him and told him I wanted to participate on one of his groups, you know, albums or whatever...if anything is coming out and he let me know Mystikal's album was coming out and I went and did something with him and it just grew from there you know. I wanted to be a part of them, I wanted to, you know, do music with them as a homey and then I wanted to get out of my situation and do a one album deal with a label. Mack 10 approached me and it didn't work out but it was still cool 'cause that's my homeboy and then P approached me and was like.....

I never knew that Hoo Bangin was a serious option for Snoop.  Where do you think Snoop would be now had he signed with Mack 10 instead of No Limit?  I'd have preferred him going to Hoo Bangin' cuz they dropped some hot albums, such as the Thicker Than Water soundtrack, CJ Mac's album, Comrades, Hoo Bangin Mix Tape, and more.  I think the quality of his music would have been a lot better, and we would have gotten a MUCH, MUCH better third album than Da Game.

It's kind of ironic, because MC Eiht was in the reverse situation; he was close to signing with No Limit, but instead signed with Hoo Bangin, and his 2 albums on Mack's label were hot.

Def Jam was also another option. He said this in The Source back in '97.

I think No Limit helped save Snoop's career and he'll say that too.  And no-im not saying that to be obnoxious--i think theres some truth in that.  Snoop released 3 platinum plus albums off No Limit--Nothing on Hoo Banging has ever come close to platinum.  Now quality wise? thats all in the eye of the beholder but Topp Dogg and Last Meal are dope as fuck.

Top Dogg and Last Meal don't count as No Limit albums in my opinion.  They may have been on No Limit, but he was living back in Cali, chilling and working with his homies by then.  "The Game" is his only true No Limit album, he was rolling tight with No Limit, No Limit was big then, and it was his worst album, but atleast it sold 2 million copies.

As a fan I would of loved for him to sign with a Cali based label like Hoo Bangin.

However, It was a smart BUSINESS desicion for Snoop to sign with No Limit.

That's true because at the time No Limit was extremely popular. Da Game was pretty much shit IMO but Topp Dogg and Last Meal were indeed dope as fuck!

I think Snoop signin wit No Limit helped him learn how to make and run a rap label like P did wit No Limit!! He went to somewhere too where he knew he was gonna at least sell platinum and he knew that he was gonna get his bank fo his records to feed his family!! If he would have went to Hoo-Bangin he might not have sold like he would at NL and then he would have been right back where he started, lookin fo a new label!!!

i forgot to add....snoop would not have fit in at hoo bangin....snoop would probably like more money put into his projects...hoo bangin was an major indi....much like nl was when they first got distribution...hoo bangin never once sold more than gold....thicker than water was their best seller....that was a double album which counts as two...so in reality it sold half of what is said.....i couldnt see snoop there...he probably wouldve went with priority with doggystlye and it woulda been poppin back then

If Snoop didn't sign with No Limit....maybe doggystyle records would be an official label since that period!

I dont think Snoop could have ran his own label back then!! Master P helped him out on showin him tha "right way" to run your label and not tha way Suge ran his!! Snoop had just came off of Death Row and had only been in tha game fo a couple of years, he wasnt experienced enough IMO to run his own label yet!! Snoop knew that too i think, thats why he decided to jump ship to NL and learn tha game of how to run a label and then run his own someday!! With P he had some1 to take him under his wing!! Snoop made a good decision to go to NL!!

snoop on hoo bangin would be tight back n the days. i think his third album would sell more than the game on no limit cuz mack 10 always had the better beats. all the hoo bangin artists would be featured and snoop would help hoo bangin sellin mo records at all in the future. but for snoop personally i think his signin with no limit was the better way. he learned alot.
