Dude tries to get back on his feet and they still try blackballing him....
MARION ‘SUGE’ KNIGHT will face a lawsuit if he continues with plans to call his music label Blackball Records - the owners of a company with the same name are threatening him with legal action.
Knight co-founded Death Row Records in 1991 but lost the rights to the label’s assets after declaring bankruptcy in 2006. The company was subsequently sold off and Knight started a new label - reportedly using the Blackball name since 2008.
But the owners of another Blackball Records, a San Fransisco, California-based firm, have issued a cease and desist letter to Knight, warning him to drop the name or face a showdown in court.
Knight claims to have filed for the copyright in 2006, but dropped it earlier this year (09), according to TMZ.com, while officials at Blackball Records claim to have held the trademark since 2002.

Lol. I like Suge. Sure, he ran his own label into the ground with help from everyone else. However, dude has an ear for good music and I respect that.

its fucked up cuz he was prolly the only one that could lift this coast and help it the way he did to begin wit (better chance vs dre or snoop doin it)

I already knew this shit was going to happen, Black Ball was already a existing company (its not rap).I knew his ass wouldn't be able to use the damn name. PS why the fuck should we feel sorry?
The son of a bitch may of got dr. dre on, but the way he went about Death Row, in the end Horse fucked it into oblivion. With the rackateering, the beatings and the threats. Man Fuck the fat mother fucker.Asshole made fun of Eazy' E's Death, tried nickel and diming the fans with Second-Generation rip offs, Shafted artist on rightfully do money.Combined refusing to sell the masters so the artist could release them on their label, and releasing only about 1 or 2 just to force the fans to buy another bullshit 2PAC Remix compilation.
So fuck him, he should of done his work, and not fuck up, because his fat ass The West Coast nearly fell off the face of the fucking earth, and the G-Funk era came to a sad halt.Mother fucker should of done his research when it came to making a new label.
Now from what I said above makes it sound like I hate the nigga. I do in some aspects, but I respect him because if it wasn't for his shady tactics, we would never of had The Chronic, Doggy Style, shit everything. In the end his ass just needed to relax.
So do I have sympathy for his plight? fuck no. Do I think he could be a driving force again? Possibly. Should he make another label??? Yes & no. Yes, because he could possibly bring back the G-Funk Era and no, because he could possibly just screw over artist/fans.

It wasn't his fault half of the shit couldn't be released. I.E. - Dre filed lawsuits to keep them from getting released. Also, Suge was entitled to keep all the masters for later on considering he paid for most of the studio time. It wasn't his choice to sign all the rip off's, keep in mind - he was in jail (1997 - 2001). If the artists were business savvy, they wouldn't have gotten shafted. Plus, most of the stuff we hear is hearsay. The Eazy thing - I can't really speak on that.

why feel sorry for a jackass?
Suge isn't a jackass if he managed to find good talent before it went big - I.E. - Keisha Cole
finding talent doesn't have an affect on whether or not your a jackass. Case in point, Puffy discovered Big. The fact is the only rapper who he stayed cool with was Pac, and he got murdered.

Yes it was, Suge Knight's main problem was pushing release dates.Albums missed released dates because Suge failed to broker the deals and push everything forward. Also wrong, Suge wasn't allowed to keep masters because of Studio Time. He was only allowed to keep masters during his Artist Contract time. Which as we all know was a Time based Iron clad contract (Anything they owned suge could distribute regardless of lawsuits).
So he could of released them and Dr. Dre or anyone couldn't say a damn thing do to the contract. In the end he didn't do it and tried to push forward with the second generation.
Also yes, he did sign the Rip offs. Keep in mind that while his bitch ass was in jail, The owner at the time (VP) was Kurupt, but all major decisions such as who signed was to go through suge. So Suge was responsible for Death Row's Destruction and failure to release anything during the second generation. He had problems with Knoch records, and was only releasing some tracks.\\
Only 1s who had a lawsuit (viable that is) was Amaru Records, which claimed that Tupac's recordings were Not under the contract (certain 1s anyways not all, All Eyez and Makaveli can't be touched).
Now you say if the artist were business savvy they wouldn't of gotten shafted.Suge has made contracts Time Based, and under the assertion anything they recorded for Death Row (Released or unreleased) was to be kept under his wing (he owns the masters).Thats said in done, its not about that. Its about the fact Suge didn't pay producers, artist or anyone at death row proper compensation for their work. That's why everyone in the first generation hated him, because while they got released suge did not pay them proper payment. That's why his stupid ass went up for racketeering charges.Because he extorted Artist, using threats, and verbal/physical abuse.
That's why Dr. Dre left, even Tupac while he had made money wasn't getting his fair share. Though because Tupac was on the success of All Eyez (which reached the 7 million mark while he was alive) and busy with the fued with biggie combined with the fact he was involved with Death Row East and his own Makaveli Records (which would of been distributed through Death Row). Tupac was to busy, all he did was record, he wasn't worried about the money at the time.
Only reason he's good with the second generation is because they never had to deal with suge face to face. He made major decisions behind bars, and when he was released, he screwed up several major releases.

No, I STATED because of contracts and I said he SHOULD have kept them due to being the one WHO FINANCED THEM in order for the TRACKS to get MADE. Suge not releasing shit is completely irrelevant, if you were stuck with labels you knew couldn't push your artists such as Koch or Navarre then of course you aren't going to release fuck all. So, you killed two points right there. Dr. Dre filed a lawsuit to PREVENT his masters from getting released on Death Row. So, you killed another point. So, what if dudes were rip offs? You still know of them, and you still listened to them just to bitch about them. Puffy is guilty of signing Shyne and Shyne went gold, got a point there? Artists like C-Po got shafted because they weren't business savvy when signing contracts. Do your research. 2Pac was getting his fair share actually, that Amaru lawsuit didn't prove a point. It was just basically hearsay about how 2Pac was giving his money away. Dr. Dre left because of the atmosphere at Death Row not because of him getting dicked around for his money. Also, there you go again making your assumptions about how everyone from the first generation hated him - they didn't hate him until he stepped up his role. Watch the Welcome 2 Death Row movie, Snoop will say exactly that. Suge was actually very influential with the 2nd generation, that's why Crooked I doesn't say anything bad about him. If you didn't act like a bitch, you didn't get treated like one. That's why Crooked I never got slapped around.

i'm not sure the last time you had your own record label but lets pretend you do/did....you think it would be easier or harder to manage it in jail or out of jail?
now lets pretend your rational and your answer is that it would be harder to run a record label from jail.....do you think that along with the fact that he's working with just about all new artists would make it even more difficult?
losing 2pac, snoop, dre and the rest of the former artists can be an argument you can make that Suge wasn't able to keep that together, but to argue that he fucked up putting out the 2nd dynasty is like gettin mad at your girl for not suckin dick as good as she did before she had braces......they both got handicaps against them!!!
-
haha^^^true tho
-
its fucked up cuz he was prolly the only one that could lift this coast and help it the way he did to begin wit (better chance vs dre or snoop doin it)
co-sign. look at all the talent he had around Tha Row era.
-
he might be a bad person or at least have done some "negative" type shit but at the same time as far as business goes hes prolly done the most for this coast when it comes to puttin talent out and muzik
then on the other hand if he did kill pac then damn ::)
its fucked up cuz he was prolly the only one that could lift this coast and help it the way he did to begin wit (better chance vs dre or snoop doin it)

In regards to the "Suge still being blackballed" comment. Being stopped from using a name for a company because it legally belongs to someone else is not being blackballed.
muffuccaz been prayin for his downfall

I don't agree. He had the potential to make some moves for the West but I think he would have needed to make some changes first.
Actually it does, because he knows what's in and what isn't. Thinking about it, if Dysfunktional Family would have came out a few years later - it would have been labeled a great soundtrack if not for the blackballing.
Again with the blackballing. This excuse gets thrown out way too often for everything. More over, blackballing has no affect on whether or not something is a great product or not. I think Suge's problems had more to do with his legal troubles than anything else. For a label that was so-called "blackballed", he seemed to have no trouble getting clearances from other labels or finding his way onto national TV programs. Or magazine covers. He had distribution through Koch. Again, I think it was more to do with certain companies being weary of doing business with a label that was under investigation for money laundering. This is not black balling. There could have also been some added apprehention about dealing with a label known for violence and intimidation. Again, not blackballing. I feel in many ways that Suge got a bum rap but I also see places where as a businessman, he should have downplayed things instead of playing them up.
-
people just hate on suge cause suge what they rap bout and that aint them....suge jakd dre snoop and few others......but in a way i feel like dre desearve it now that i see that he dont fuk with westkoast artist as much........good luk suge your music executive career is over tho....

Like Crooked I said, they wouldn't say no to Suge because they were afraid of him - once Suge left the picture though - they said fuck Death Row. That's why Still Tha Row never reached many networks.

why feel sorry for a jackass?

Lol. Some of it was stupidity, some of it was sheer capitalizing on a good thing. Suge Knight? Eh. Lol.

No use in all this speculation and semantics over one south central entrepreneur...one who hasn't really done much good for the world...Is that what Dre Day wants to dedicate his life to?

Alright, well, here could be the problem. When people are afraid to do business with the guy in charge of getting business done, it strikes me as counter-productive. Regardless of if the guy on the other side of the table is the biggest pussy or punk, it doesn't change what needs to be done. In the end, nobody is gonna take a meeting and listen to an idea that will generate money and then say, "No, sorry, I'm not fucking with that. I don't like the dude." Your Still The Row theory is speculation. How many videos are made for singles that never make it to MTV? Quite a few. Suge himself said it, "If you're hot, people will fuck with you." Put it this way. When Snoop puts one of his projects out on Koch and you don't see the video on MTV, is your first thought, "Oh, he must be getting black balled!".
It's no different than prima donna movie stars or divas. They'll take the temper tantrums and what have you as long as the money is coming in but when your value slips, you're in a different position. Look at Van Damme and Steven Seagal back in the 90s and look at them now. Are they being blackballed? Internet people grab on to this "black ball" shit and it's so clearly being thrown around like a child who heard a new word and hasn't grasped its significance. If you come in my house and piss on my rug and I don't invite you back, that's not blackballing you, that's me saying, "I don't want that disrespectful mother fucker in my home again!". Again, let me real clear in saying that I'm not saying that this is Suge Knight or Death Row doing this but there is a difference between industry folks looking at the news and saying, "This guy's company is under investigation by the Feds and he's wanted in connection with this, maybe this ain't a place I want my money tied up in" and "We are not ever doing business with this company and if you do business with them, we aren't gonna work with you either". I'm not endorsing the industry and saying that's the way it should be handled but if you're expecting unconditinal loyalty from the recording industry, I don't know what to tell ya.

why feel sorry for a jackass?
Suge isn't a jackass if he managed to find good talent before it went big - I.E. - Keisha Cole
finding talent doesn't have an affect on whether or not your a jackass. Case in point, Puffy discovered Big. The fact is the only rapper who he stayed cool with was Pac, and he got murdered.
Also, wrong. Tha Realest, J Flexx, Petey Pablo, and multiple others are still cool with Suge. The only ones who aren't are Snoop, Dre, Tray Dee, and anyone affiliated with those dudes and for the right reasons.
Apparently not cool enough to stay in contact. Even if they didn't leave with the same feelings as Dre, Snoop and the others, they still don't want to fuck with him.
J Flexx and Doobie said they would work with Suge anytime in the future. I'm not sure about Realest.
congrats. you found two rappers who like Suge. Does this prove whatever point you are trying to make?

Like Crooked I said, they wouldn't say no to Suge because they were afraid of him - once Suge left the picture though - they said fuck Death Row. That's why Still Tha Row never reached many networks.
Actually, that's not speculation. Lol. It came straight from Crooked I's mouth. MTV doesn't show music videos. Also, Suge and Death Row were getting the shaft in the 2000's like 50 was after he dropped Ghetto Quaran. No one wanted to touch his shit.

muffuccaz been prayin for his downfall
its fucked up cuz he was prolly the only one that could lift this coast and help it the way he did to begin wit (better chance vs dre or snoop doin it)
Amen.

It's because you are a 2Pac fan.

MTV not playing the videos is true. The reason behind it is speculation. As for 50, it wasn't after Ghetto Qua'ran that MTV gave him the so-called "shaft". It was after Columbia dropped him. He had a pretty good buzz during the Columbia run and I can even recall his video for "Life's on the Line" showing up on Sunday Night Heat in 1999-2000. He wasn't getting video play after that because he wasn't on a label. The labels are the ones responsible for pushing the videos and radio singles. If you don't have that kind of support behind you, it's hard to get noticed.

If I'm not mistaken the Still Tha Row video was banned by MTV (and others for that matter) because "of its overall tone", the intro alone was probably enough reason for refusing to air it.

Gangsta rap in general started getting the shaft around this time. I doubt it had anything to do with Death Row being blackballed. West coast rap wasn't (and isn't) getting mainstream attention so its not surprising that Suge's new group of unknowns didn't get any play.

Knight claims to have filed for the copyright in 2006, but dropped it earlier this year (09), according to TMZ.com, while officials at Blackball Records claim to have held the trademark since 2002.

the reason Suge can't set up a new label properly, is because he's not such a great businessman.
you can't blame others for that.

It's because you are a 2Pac fan.
Yes while I am a makaveli fan, I'm not 1 of the morons who believes Suge Knight murdered him. Ever since that "Tupac Assassination" was released, its just added fake fuel to a bullshit theory created by the media.Look up The rebuttals, I can't trust anymore shit from his security guard (not that I really trusted him before).Makaveli recordsi was going through Death Row, Tupac was working with suge on Death Row east, as well has having The One Nation album be his third album, before he would be transferred over to Makaveli/East.
Now I don't have pure hate 4 suge. Because honestly in some aspects I have deep respect 4 him, and others I got no love. Just depends on what the discussion is.When it comes to cheating the artist, got no love, when it comes to him executive producing, well shit the record speaks for himself. again some aspects of him I don't have any respect, others I got respect 4. Just like every other mother fucker I know or fucking listen to.

I'm saying in regards to blackballing. Both Suge and 50 weren't played because of certain people in the industry.

It didn't catch the eye of B.E.T. either.
