Okay so I seen some members making remarks that say that Tupac was and still is over rated? Purely because he died then everyone was on his ass quicker than gary glitter. But I want to find out if the people at the best west coast forum around think? Is he over rated? If so, why?
If he isn't, why?
-
no he isn't
he s the truest nigga ever touched the mic
-
threads like these are overrated tho. Pac is the Malcolm X of Rap, you really don't get any better than him, you can only be different.
-
Maybe better "rapping" skills but as an overall artist and MC no.
He is a Modern Shakespeare
-
a clear !NO!
-
Perhaps as a rapper for his rap ability, but as far as him as a Hip Hop star, not at all. To be the best in a profession, it takes just more than skill alone. A lot of people could have torn 2Pac apart lyrically back in 96, but it was his personality, charisma, and passion which puts him above others

Real talk^^

just the fact that some would consider him a literal black jesus is what makes him over rated to some extent.
-
over rated??? not at all
guy made 5 solo albums while alive and they are all solid + the thug life group album was dope as fuck too
then you add in the some 150-200 non-album tracks that 2pac provided us posthumously with and that further cements his legacy
-
Hell nah..he is the truest, realest nigga ever...He was a black Jesus of the rap shit..He was sent here to suffer for all the sins of white man and other media bs..I mean struggle that he went throu is unbearable...no man has ever witnessed struggle he survived..I mean he got shot 5 times and was locked up for a year for touching girls bum. That is some Jesus Christ Punishment.
I mean how does that struggle even compare to Father or Mother of some countries picking up her lovely 4 year old daughter all burned or Father or Mother in places like Russia whose children didnt come back from school becoz human traffickers kidnapped them and killed to sell livers, lungs and organs. And mother is left daily waiting and expecting her child to come back and ready to ask what is there to eat and make her bed knowing she will never come back
No man has ever witnessed struggle Pac survived.I mean how does being 1 year in jail being harrased by real gnagster niggaz compare to being sent mistakenly on deathrow for 30 years waiting on the sentence and being told that it was a case of mistaken indentity.
Let 2pac aka Black Jesus aka Realest Nigga that lived to suffer Rest In Peace, he had such a hard life.
Prove me motherfucking wrong you nerds.. :baseballbat:
-
oh and as far as rap goes...He is the most complex and truest rapper ever touching a mic. I mean
Niggaz bleeeeeeeeeeed
I drink henessyyyyyyyyy'
All my enemieeeeeeeeeeeeeees
Run, when they seeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Fuck the polieeeeeeeeeeeeeeece
They aint got shit on meeeeeeeeeeee
But a struggle i went through, you better beliieeeeeeeeeeeve(See what he did there, internal rhyme that first didnt rhyme, but than he switched up...on some Royce Da 59 Shit)
Niggaz wilding in the penetentiaryyyyyyyyyyyyyy
This shit is getting hectic
Niggaz using automatic(omg that is so true, i mean in the history of our peacefull Planet Earth, this is the first time ever people were using autimatic weapons and killing each other)
Best Rapper ever! And the fact that he wrote this song at least 2000 times in all them diffferent songs is amazing!, i cannot belive you are calling this rapper overrated.
Diss My God,my Angel, My Black jesus and i will end up on ur doorstep Listening to Changes and holding semi automatic!
Its Blasphemy to speak bad on Tupac Shakur! He suffered enough to be dissed like that! Refer to my first post!
-
hell yea he over-rated he aint as whack as Snoop though
-
Hes not over rated, hes great. But his fans are what make him overrated. I mean come on.
-
Yes.
He was still a great rapper though. People get a misconception that being overrated is a negative thing. All it means is that some people make him out to be more than he was. No he wasn't black Jesus, no he wasn't hip hop's savior. He was a great artist who made great music while speaking on some simple truths. And yes, some other rappers could see him on the mic.

No. i was gonna quote a reason for why he isn't, but a lot of people here have hit the nail on the head with different reasons
-
hardly listen to his music anymore dude was straight average as fuck

his fans are what make him overrated.
This.

Cosign. He was the most poetic and had rawest and realest lyrics. I think that is why a lot of people felt him cuz he rapped about shit a lot of the time that touched most people.
Also he was the most emotional and that is what music is about... sad, happy, angry, whatever. He could do it. He can convincingly go from Changes to Hitemup to Cali Love to Brenda's Got a Baby
-
no he isn't
he s the truest nigga ever touched the mic
you mean the same nigga that wanted to be a ballerina?

Ppl gotta remember, lyrical ability isn't the end all be all. A true MC is well rounded. Some of these lyrical dudes can't write a song to save their asses or they try and tell a story or deliver a message and it gets lost in a bunch of metaphors and lyrical parades. Pac was the most lyrical, but he wasn't Soulja Boy either. I'd give him a B on lyrical skills. But he had a presence on the mic or what the kids call swagger now. He could tell a great story painting a image that your imagination would wrap around. He could bring out raw emotions on records. Do records that make you sad, happy, angry or just want to whoop a motherfuckers ass. The only rappers I can think of off the top that a real raw with their emotions are DMX, Eminem and Tech N9ne. He had versatility and could rap about anything. He had something to say and there were times when he would go crazy on the mic and times when I knew to hold back and let the message sink in
-
4 classics? Naw, I'm pretty sure he isn't overrated.

Asking this question in here is about as worthwhile as asking if Eminem is overrated at a D-12 concert. This subject has come up like a million times before and really hasn't brought that much in terms of interesting conversation. Tupac Shakur was undoubtly one of the very best artists that mainstream hip-hop music has ever had but that being said, the volume of people who seem to think that everything he does is perfect and that it's blasphemy to think otherwise is ridicilous. He's an interesting figure because on the one hand, he introduced a lot of ideas to hip-hop audiences that they may not ever have thought about or accepted if another voice had spoken on them but they also seemed to accept his take on these issues as "gospel" rather than attempting to expand their knowledge on these issues. I think in the wake of his death, a lot of super-fans started running around with these romanticized notions of a person they never met based on his interviews and music. I mean, the guy was a tremendously compelling speaker but sometimes, it's like people are so caught up in the extra shit that it turns into something else.
"Pac was the truest and most real". Well, how do we know this? And furthermore, why is it neccesary for great art to be a reflection of reality? I'd suggest it's less about the actual reality of it but more the perceived reality and how the listener relates to it. It's not about who is the most honest but whose story speaks most directly to their audience. I mean, if a rapper wrote an album where he said he thought about kissing dudes, hated his old hood, beat and raped women, and was only in music because he loved the money, would he be considered "one of the realest" because he spoke the truth? I think Pac's unique genius wasn't he always told the truth because he didn't. It was that he told stories with a better understanding of the human condition than most and with a level of vunerability.
As far as "overrated", I don't know what to say. It's the Eminem situation where even though I think he's among the all-time most talented in his field, the absurdly-hyperbolic statements made by a large portion of his fan base make me cringe at times. If Ice Cube can be overrated or Biggie or Dr. Dre or Snoop or Nas then why is Pac exempt from the debate?
-
Pac Over-rated..that the funniest talk I've ever heard in my life..
ain't no rapper dead or alive that can contest with Pac...

this a great post
-
i use to think pac was a lil over rated... but the considering the small amount of good music that has came out since his passing, i would say "no" now. but he also was the biggest transformer in game....
-
What is happening to this forum these days? First of all, one guy says Biggie is no better than Rick Ross, then we have someone else suggesting one of hip-hop (or even music)'s most loved figures was overrated. The guy released a steady stream of great albums from his Digital Underground days all the way up until his passing.
Sometimes I think on here people make up thread titles they know will get replies without thinking of the stupidity of what they're typing.
-
Yes and he's dead, let it go.

By providing discussion to the forum? Either one you an un-educated moron or two, your just simply retarded. But frankly, I'm going with both.
-
Tupac is only overrated when you reflects on his stans riding and dying for him. Beyond that he put in the work and reaped what he sowed (positively and negatively). If anything I think the new generation is forgetting about him and have been influenced by Jay-Z or Nas more than Pac.
-
2pac is a legend, he is the hip-hop Bob Marley, his music will live forever!
-
I don't see nobody alive whos better than him. He had it all.
Seriously though, as much as pac is my nigga and all, im going through a biggie phase right about now but in terms of pac being overrated, not really, its because of what cats at interscope and maybe the work people like eminem have done to pacs name which may make people think twice about dude or if u knew to hiphop but regardless of time or whatever hiphop phase u come from, pac is amazing.

-
hardly listen to his music anymore dude was straight average as fuck
no he was not average like the crap you listen to new school . he was one of the best of that era & that is fact .

this. every time someone asks was tupac overrated some people get butthurt , like itīs a fact that everyone KNOWS he is the best and realest ever and no one has the right to have an opinion of their own . rap forums turn into North Korea the very minute someone even dares to question Lord Shakurīs Total Awesomeness . for fucks sake....forums are about conversation , right ?
okay, itīs common that internet people think " i know this, this is my opinion so itīs the truth and fuck you for thinking otherwise" but when it comes to 2pac itīs on a whole new level.
of course tupacīs music will live on , so will many other good musicianīs .
i used to listen to pac a lot when i was younger but i never liked his full albums except makaveli. good albums but i usually donīt want to listen to them from the start til the end .
so, overrated ? yeah, because his fans try to make him into a Latter Day Saint ( no mormon ) .
was he good? yeah , he had some great songs as well as some corny ones but i give him a spin now and then . even some songs i donīt really like that much but the manīs delivery could save some horrible beats - one of the best voices and flows in rap . he was good in what he did .
letīs see how much hate i get for not agreeing with the church of twoopack shakur
-
Pac is very, very, VERY overrated
-
His angelic image is over-rated. His click the Outlawz are over-rated. His gangster image is over-rated. Guy was the best at what he done IMO but I'd say he was over-rated in some sense, but not his status

Wait there, let me just go grab a medal to congratulate you because you found out I did the thread, and I typed it, not wrote it. It is a question, asking people on this forum, where it is the heart of rap fans. If you want my personal response, no I don't think he is over rated. However, if the Makaveli album had the best tracks, composed from the handwritten tracklists then it could have been the best rap album of all time. After Tupac died, tracks were tampered with
-

I'd love to know how you figure that to be the case. What exactly is missing from the album that brings it down?

For example tracks like when thugz cry, lost souls, maybe the inclusion of friendz

I hate threads like these... all hey scream to me is Attention Whore!
If you're on a website that's West Coast and you ask such a question you're bound to get plenty of replies, it's like people make these threads so they can brag about the amount of replies their thread got to themselves and friends.

Def not overrated. Dude was a legend

Great songs but I fail to see how their inclusion would have made "Makaveli" a better album or "the best rap album of all-time".
-
No 2pac isnt over rated, but if u think about it.it was alot of other artist out there they was better rappers then pac, like bone thugs n harmony was shitting on everybody back in the early 90's.but pac was a better song writer, story teller.its alot of things pac had that made him the best.
-

Real talk, i wish there were more rappers who would show there inner emotions , i miss lyrics like the below
Sent alot of flowers
But how could I cry?
Tried to warn the little nigga
Either stop or die
Mercy is for the weak
When I speak I scream
Afraid to spleep
I'm having crazy dreams
Vivid pictures of my enemies family times
God forgive me cuz its wrong
But I plan to die
Either take me in heaven
And understand I was a G
Did the best I could raised in insanity
Or send me to hell
Cuz I ain't begging for my life
Ain't nothing worse than this cursed ass hopeless life
-

Great songs but I fail to see how their inclusion would have made "Makaveli" a better album or "the best rap album of all-time".
In place of Just Like Daddy and Toss It Up, definitely would've been better.

Exactly, just like daddy was completely un-necessary to be honest. I would have loved "When Thugz Cry" to be on there, but the sample did not clear in time.

I'd love to know how you figure that to be the case. What exactly is missing from the album that brings it down?
Toss It Up was last minute, and the original Hail Mary should have been included, but overall for less than a weeks worth, it shat on almost anything in rap as far as "dark & deep" went. Some underground East Coast, and to a lesser extent - West cats done dark religious themed albums, but no one on mainstream even considered it, and 2PAC added in a lot of political and personal issues, which, coinsiding with his death made it more remarkable, and noticeable in the things he was saying. I mean - the front cover itself is an eerie coincidence in a way. I can remember reading an article in mid 97, about general album covers and how 2Paco's Makable came up, and played on the whole "crucified" concept, and that the Black Jesus thing span from that right before the leak of the Black Jesus track on what (if memory serves me right) was the Express tapes before anyone even knew there was a Black Jesus track in existence
