Samen zijn we sterk
Eendracht maakt machtig
Hoe een klein land groot kan zijn
is dat niet prachtig

Nederland oh Nederland
Jij bent de kampioen
Wij houden van Oranje
Om zijn daden en zijn doen

Straks als het Rood-Wit-Blauw
Voor ons wordt gehesen
Dan zijn wij 'n groot gezin
Met goud zijn wij geprezen

Nederland oh Nederland
Jij bent de kampioen
Wij houden van Oranje
Om zijn daden en zijn doen

Van de tribune klinkt het Wilhelmus
Nu nog mooier dan voorheen
Och wie laat geen tranen

Nederland oh Nederland
Jij bent de kampioen
Wij houden van Oranje
Om zijn daden en zijn doen

Wij houden van Oranje
't Is de ware kampioen.

I strongly resent that comment! English hooligans. the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland fans are not only hooligans. Its only the English fans that cant take losing. the grown up responsible English fans can take the defeat on the chin but they always take a thousand or so fans that think acting like a hooligan is the appropriate reaction to another disapointing tournament.

So please don't tar us all with the same brush by saying were all hooligans.

Looking forward to the tournament it will be great to watch it purely for football reasons and not have to listen to the over hyping of the england team.

With big tournaments where countries play each other the English are the worst. The local authorities are happy that Engaland didn't qualify.

i see.

Well I feel the same about the Holland national team - that euro game between portugal/holland was very dirty on both ends, starting with two extremely dirty, harsh fouls by Holland players on C.Ronaldo within the first 3-4 minutes of the game.

You have great talents but as team , Nrtherlands is inferior to both France and Italy ... anyways, regarding the incredible amount of great players you have , it has been  BIG waste you never have won a major competition for 20 years

^explain to me what makes the portuguese national team so unsporty?

They complain to the referee all the time. They fall on the ground whenever a leg hits them (or before). They make very harsh fouls. Do I really have to explain? Hell, even Portuguese people agreed with me when I told them I think they're unsporty.

Will be a great time that year. Obviously I´ll support Austria, after that Switzerland (cause they´re co-hosts and nice people in general ;) ) and then the Netherlands. Out of those three the dutch have the best chances on winning it (obviously) but probably won´t make it. They always disappoint in big tournaments and I guess it unfortunately won´t be different this time.

Portugal could really land an "upset" this year simply cause of Ronaldo.

http://www.arsenal.com/article.asp?thisNav=News&article=491279&lid=NewsHeadline&Title=Wenger+confirms+Rosicky+to+miss+Euro+2008

Tomas Rosicky will miss Euro 2008 this summer.

The Arsenal midfielder, who is the captain of the Czech Republic, has not played since January 26 when he limped off after five minutes against Newcastle with a hamstring problem.

Arsène Wenger described the injury as "not a serious one, but a strange one". However it ended Rosicky's season and now has put paid to his immediate ambitions with the national side.

"Tomas Rosicky is likely to miss the European Championships," said Wenger at Friday's press conference.

"He was always on the fringe of coming back, so you always hope. But I think he lives well with it now. He has integrated that in his head for a while.

"He is in a situation where he wants to come back and be ready for next season, but at the moment he cannot play.”

ok, but still your team looks weak. Just look at your attackers: Barosplays weak for years, Koller is 35 now, and Sverkos is a joke. Fenin had a few good games, I think he has potential, but that's not enough.

Portugal starting lineup for today
[ 4-2-3-1 ]

Ricardo
Bosingwa
Pepe
Ricardo Carvalho
Paulo Ferreira
Petit
Joao Moutinho
Cristiano Ronaldo
Deco
Simao
Nuno Gomes
Coach: Luiz Felipe Scolari

I fuckin hate Nuno Gomes so much, its unreal...he was terrible in qualifying, he cant score 2 save his fuckin life...Sad to see such magnificent young talent such as Nani and Quaresma get the shaft for someone like gomes..Quaresma cant really play striker, but Nani can and should be there..

Surprised to see Moutinho starting, hope he does well

glad to see pepe starting, i was hopeful he would but didnt think it would happen

Yes! i couldn't be happier with Portugal's performance today! fantastic result, we really were extremely solid! especially the defense, what a difference having Pepe and Bosingwa back there! the defense is SOLID, i cant stress that enough!

I know its Turkey u may say, but we really were fantastic..2-0 and 3 posts plus a disallowed goal on a VERY close call..

again, couldnt be happier

VIVA PORTUGAL ;)

PS: I hope Nani is ok :-\

easy win for portugal, should have been by more, not sure how turkey kept 11 players on the pitch.

LOL the best is always hated - whether most like to admit it or not, CR7 is the best player in the world and he doesn't dive nearly as much as he did let's say 2+ yrs ago. In the end, CR7 will be a better player than figo, have more club trophies and have more int'l success (i am confident portugal will win a major tournament under him, figo only has a under 19 world cup).

I love figo as well, just telling it how it is.

perhaps its my bias, but after the first 2 days and half the groups playing their first game, portugal has looked the best out of all the teams which have played (granted most of the best teams are in group c and d).

Germany is the only real competition for them and there defense seemed to be much more shaky than portugal's was which was absolutely stellar.

Homie i don't need to say Holland was superior. Shit, they destroyed us 3-0. The result speaks alone.

I'm watching it from an italian prospective, of course.

In Italy there are three sportal newspaper all dedicated to sport (exp. football).

Corriere dello Sport (it's from Rome) today started with this title: "Donadoni Disaster"

Tuttosport (it's from Turin) says: "Give us Lippi back!"

..and Gazzetta dello Sport... well.. it's from Milan, so it's another story.

Everybody in Italy is blaming our manager. It's not just me. We didn't need this game to know Holland can play football. You're a very skilled team, and you made a perfect game. But we're Italy. We know how to shut opponents down. We know how to win those type of games. We didn't. And it's ourself to blame. Starting from the manager.

I think it's a bit too easy to blame everything on Donadoni. Your team ain't what it used to be (2006), your defense always was your big strength with nesta and cannavaro, and now the defense is exposed, they can't substitute them equally. I don't want to say that donadoni made no mistakes (he should've brought del piero earlier, grosso needs to be in the starting line up), BUT he has not the same material lippi had.

nesta in 2006 has played only 1 (or maybe 2) games. now cannavaro is out,ok.....but the main problem was the midfield with gattusto pirlo and ambrosini when you have de rossi perrotta and aquilani on the bench.
donadoni don't have only totti and nesta....

Bad choice on Czech, they weren't looking good at all in their first match, and it's not likely they'll improve much. You could be right on Switzerland though. I enjoyed their play so far.

it's 1:1 now, probably there will be 2 more goals, and we didn't have to play much against Suiss, that's why it was so boring game

3-1 Portugal, fantastic result for us! although i wish we didnt concede a goal, aw well

i admit i wasnt particularly happy with how we played but that may be a compliment in itself; we certainly didnt play to our full potential at all, and to still come out with a 3-1 win against the czech is very, very acceptable

Ronaldo didnt play very well, but wow that was a beautiful goal!

That would actually be great, since they both suck and don't deserve to be on the tournament at all.

Not that the Swiss team have anyone but themselves to blame (bit of bad luck, yes), but they deserve to be in the tournament as much as Greece, Sweden, Romania or Poland. Obviously, they're not Spain, Germany or Portugal though. Why all the aggression dude?

...and the Austrians were a positive surprise against Croatia too

This was a game between two of the worst competitors of the tournament. Switzerland was a little bit worse than Turkey, so they lost. I don't think Turkey will stand a chance against CR.

of course Austria woul've never qualified for the tournament. Not sure about Swisse, there are other teams like Greece who are atleast as bad as Swisse. It's only bad for the atmosphere, you know...

So what? I liked the game because both teams didn't hide in their dedense and played with heart. Teams like France or Russia didn't even fight, so you have to acknoledge their perfomance.
And I can't see why CR is stronger than Turkey, the Czechs played a crappy tournament so far.

Poland will have 3 points in 20 minutes. Austria will do everything to win from Germany in their last game, so that will be a draw. Croatia will suck ass against Poland since they're already qualified, so Poland will win that one. With this scenario Croatia and Poland will both go through with 6 points.

I hope this happens because I love Leo Beenhakker :P

iight let's get this discussion on for the day

an hour and a half until Italy-Romania is on - as good as Romania is, if italy wants to prove they are still THAT team, they gotta win 3/4-0 today; wont happen though - i think they can pull off a 1-0 or MAYBE 2-0 win - im really hoping for a tie or italian loss - that would end their chance of advancing practically

Holland-France should be a good one today - if holland can dominate france as they did italy, will have a new tournament favorite imo after the favorites (Germany from my understanding) took a big L last night

let's go france; not that i dislike holland, but a france win would also put italy in a tough posistion in terms of advancing out of the group ;D
Title: Re: OFFICIAL EURO 2008 THREAD
Post by: Elevz on June 13, 2008, 08:53:32 AM
It's so easy to underestimate Romania... Before the tournament, I'd expected Italy and France to be stronger, but now, I can see Romania getting a draw out of this, or even a win, if all goes well. Who knows though - all eyes are on the Italians, who have something to prove.

As for The Netherlands - France... I understand it would be good for the competition if the French were to get at least some points out of this match, but I prefer seeing a neatly functioning Dutch team over a more exciting but flawed competition.

P.S.: the Dutch were already a major contestant for the title, before most people realized it.

Damn Holland is on fire. France sucked, that coach is awful, they play with too much discipline (if that makes sense), they look so unrelaxed and their whole style of game is like, "we're gonna do our defense, all you forwards do what you can do, we don't care." Everything comes down to Henry's briliance or something like that, there's no organized actions. Same shit was happening to them on WC 2006 but they got lucky and qualified.

i mentioned that to a friend today - playing such good teams early has to take some steam out of u as well.

After already qualifying I am sure Van Basten will field the substitutes against Romania so the players can remain fresh for the next stage.

I always root for Italy, but I can't help but admire the Dutch so far. I know they're vulnerable in defence, someone just needs to test them. I would love to see this Holland team play Spain, that could be fireworks.

LOL call it karma since we had a TOUGH route to the semi's at world cup (england) & holland while italy had Australia and Ukraine ::)

well Germany is likely a match up for next round; if we get past that, semi opponent will be Croatia or Czech Republic (Turkey has an outside chance).

Seriously, this Dutch team plays exactly the type of football that makes me love watching games...they're vulnerable in defense, yes, but the offense makes up for that ten times. They just go all out and crush opponents. They just beat 2 of the last 3 world champions with 7:1 goals...they played great against Italy and they played even better today, they fucked France up. Team of the tournament so far, big props

Yup. World class performance. The thing about this Dutch team is the depth they have in the squad, especially in the "offense"....Robben, RVN, Kuyt, Van Persie....Any of these players could start OR be used as an impact substitute when the opponents legs are tiring. It shows you how good this team is when Huntelaar aint even getting a look in.

This tourny is just so much better than 04 where negative but effective football was winning over eccentricity.

What a game, can't believe how good Netherlands haver been, hope they go all the way, my only fear as someone said earlier is that they've peaked to early

First of all I don't understand why Domenech did not select Trezeguet the guy can finish, he's way better than Anelka, who's been completely useless, he should have at least put Benzema in over Anelka. Secondly why didn't he bring in Nasri for some more offensive support like the commentator said in their first game use him in a Zidane like role to give some support to the strikers, instead of keeping two defensive midfielders while they were trying to press

My only concern is they may have peaked too early and how they react when they go behind.

There's no telling what might happen next. After that incredible win against Italy, people weren't expecting the Dutch to actually live up to the expectations. Well, I guess they were wrong (me included), although, as opposed to the Italy-match, this time the final score seems unfitting with the actual match.

It's not too hard to predict what will happen when an opponent scores; you've already seen what happened when the French scored. The look on Robben's face: priceless. That's precisely what's to be expected from a team which plays with such an incredible will to show and prove: you think you've got one on them, but it only motivates them.

As for the assumed defensive weakness of the Dutch... There's no walking past Boulahrouz - he's impossibly accurate with them slidings. Ooijer is proving himself to be very solid as well. Van Bronckhorst needs no further explaining. It's only Mathijsen who's being a threat to his own defense, but merely because he constantly plays on the edge of what the referee allows; he risks getting one or two penalties against him. That's about the only real weakness in the defense. You can't say the defensive midfielders are weak either; De Jong has proven to be a great replacement for Heitinga, and Engelaar has been incredibly solid for FC Twente for years now, and his talents are finally being noticed by a bigger audience. He just had an off-day against the French, which resulted in him being rather invisible during the first half, but it happens.

For the next match, the Dutch can work on the rhythm of a great bunch of substitutes. I can just see Heitinga, Huntelaar, Bouma, De Cler, Melchiot, De Zeeuw, Vennegoor, Afellay etc getting some time to shine. That may seem an unfair advantage to the Romanians, but don't underestimate the will of such substitutes to prove that they belong in the main team. The Romanians won't get away easy.

Holand  will just let romania win for eliminate france and italy, that's a simple and normal calcul. the problem for the france is always and always the success..they got 3-4 easy goal and 12 chance to mark. in comparasion holand shot 6 times and goal 4 times. at this level it's a question of success. france play better on some level.

Holand  will just let romania win for eliminate france and italy, that's a simple and normal calcul.

Why should they? The Dutch have already humiliated them, whereas the Romanians might be equally strong, if not better than the French and Italians. You surely don't expect the Italians, if they manage to make it to the semi-finals, to beat the Dutch all of a sudden?

the problem for the france is always and always the success..they got 3-4 easy goal and 12 chance to mark. in comparasion holand shot 6 times and goal 4 times. at this level it's a question of success. france play better on some level.

Now that's definately true. It seemed like the Dutch were hardly getting any chances, but the ones they were getting, resulted in the most fantastic goals. The French seemed to create more chances, but they lack the precision to actually score. Even that one French goal looked rather fluky. They'll be having a hard time against Italy...

Oh, and please stop calling us "Holand" - you're making it sound like it's the country of the hoes

I (slightly) disagree with two things here: The result wasn't too high. Of course the Dutch were a bit lucky, that goes for both games, since both Italy and France had some opportunities they couldn't turn into goals. Still, the fact it both resulted in 3+ victories proves the Dutch system right and the fact that the French shot at goal a lot doesn't mean all that much taking into account that the large majority of their attempts was harmless stuff.

Still, what I see as the one problem in the Dutch team is not the man-to-man situations in the defense, you're totally right the Dutch defenders are very solid at that, but the fact that sometimes the opponent gets a bit more space to play in the offensive third than they should. This is something the Croatians have done so incredibly well against Germany.

Ribery was very strong yesterday, he was the only one who fought back. But the rest of the team left him alone. Besides him Toulalan was decent, Sagnol and Evra were ok but that's it.  Their attackers including Henry were a joke. Henry played in the first half like he was on narcotics. And they could only score  because Sagnol fouled RVN or whoever it was. Malouda, Anelka and that Gomis dude were a fuckin' joke. And 35 old-year Thuram against Robben was pure comedy :D

Holland was fantastic

LOL at Ivory Coast beating Italy and France , even right now

I was not sarcastic- do you guys know how strong Ivory Coast is. Matter of fact, Italy and France look ridiculous now, basicially because their teams are too old or the younger pkayers are weak (or atleast they look weak to me.) and I blame both coaches for that.
Italy has an excuse because Nesta Cannavaro were their insurance for the last few years, andthey can't replace them. But wtf is this with washed-up guys like Panucci. Also, they had some bad luck against Romania.
France played ok yesterday- but besides Ribery their offence looked horrible. How can Domenech leave Trezeguet at home and take pussies like Anelka and malouda. And bring guys like Gomis instead of Nasri and Benzema. Their defence is even worse. Sagnol (who was ok yesterday), Makelele and Thuram? OK Viera is injured, he was the big leader besides Zidane, and maybe the only one who has enough balls to lead this team, but still... Domenech and Donadoni both didn't have the courage to sort out old players, and made some weird decisions before and during the tournament. We had the same thing with Völler- he also didn't make the cut...
Matter of fact Ivory Coast would probably beat their actual line-up. Imagine what guys like Toure and Drogba would do with Thuram. Ivory Coast was already strong in the last World Cup and if you saw the last Africa-Cup you would know how strong they are. Their only problem is still that they need too many shots to score.

yup. Ronaldo is important, but what makes them more than average is the defense. Ferreira and Carvalho are two world class defenders, and Pepe already proved his skills. Now show me a team with a better defense than that? I think the point you mentioned is exactly the difference to former Porugal teams- everything depended on Deco and Figo. Now the roster has way more depth because of young guys like Nani ,Quaresma or Moutinho who seem to have potential,  Scolari has many options for offense and defense.  Besides the goalie, the only weakness may be the lack of a pure goalgetter like van Nistelroy or Toni.

What I meant by that if Ronaldo doesn't play= Portugal is an average team.

Yeah our defense is great - don't forget Bosingwa, he's the most slept on but trust me when I say Bosingwa > Ferreira..he's actually been our best defender this tournament imo - no wonder Chelsea just spent all that cash on him

Oh yeah we are very deep - I forgot to mention Mountinho and Miguel Veloso hasnt even got on the field yet, wait til he does. Yeah the goalie isn't great and we have literally no striker pretty much, that's the team weakness.

I understand, its all good - I've seen him loads of times cause he played for my favorite club (FC Porto) before just signing with Chelsea and what a fantastic season he had this year; Miguel is decent, but can not finish a game without getting hurt - i've never seen someone so damn injury prone :-\

Portugal doesn't have a striker like Van Nistelrooy, but one of the reasons Ronaldo is by general consensus the greatest player out there at the moment is that dude scored 42 fucking goals in one season. So I wouldn't call the striker situation a weakness of the team really.

that is true - I think we can contend with any team this tournament - u wont see Netherlands beating us 4-1 or anything like that; their roster isnt ridiculously different since the 06 world cup where we eliminated them.

yeah, but a similar roster doesn't mean the players can't have grown in the meantime. Also, that game was such a scandal it turned out to be almost entirely coincidental in the end. But no, Portugal wouldn't get a 1-4 or 0-3 against Holland, I'm convinced too. POR - NED would probably be my dream final, with POR - ESP coming in a close second (an Iberic derby on that great stage would be the shit). Let's just hope Germany doesn't spoil the party, but after the first 2 games I do have some confidence.

I got what your sayin, just stating we can beat them lol and have done it before..it was a scandal and most blamed us, but holland played just as if not MORE dirty than we did - go back and watch that game and take a look at the two HARD fouls on Ronaldo in the opening FIVE MINUTES - they set the tone for that game from the beginning with those fouls..Yeah, we wouldnt get killed, not a chance..I think your dream final will be correct or your 2nd dream final at least - i dont think Germany or Croatia will spoil that for you, hopefully Spain/Holland can get there 2..

Yeah, I didn't mean to say it was only the Portuguese. It was both teams, the red cards were distributed equally, and I was kind of embarassed to support those teams for a minute. Also however, the referee played his part in making it a mess as well. Some of those cards were unnecessary and it just got everyone more pissed off.

You never know with the Germans, same as Italy. They can be wack in every single game of the tournament and end up winning it. Portugal definitely has the better team than Germany, but it's Germany after all. I'm pretty confident we'll see a semi ESP - NED, which should be great.

I hope we can take care of Germany; Yeah ESP-NED semi is lookin good, oo boy I hope no wack ass team ruins that, that would be a phenomenal game - i'm predicting 19 goals scored between both teams lol (sarcasm)

You said it yourself : blame the coach ... Sagnol has always been very good for us but he was injured all year ... but put this following lineup we would be so much better :

            Henry         Benzema

Ribery      Makelele         Vieira            Giuly

Evra           Gallas        Mexes               Sagnol

                          Frey

You can blame the coaches partly, but not completely.
Sagnol was not just injured he played 2 awful seasons for Bayern now- I think he needs to be replaced. Same goes for Makelele, everbody's talkin 'bout Flamini but Makelele still plays...

And I dunno if Mexes is good enough to play for French National team.

Lunatic: I don't think Sweden or Russia will be able to ruin it for the Dutch. Romania/Italy/France, especially Italy or France could be the point were Spain stumbles. I sincerely hope not, even if it's Italy I don't care if they get kicked out by Spain the way they keep playing this year.

Eclipze: Yeah, 9 yellows for Portugal, 7 for Holland and 2 reds for each, I looked it up. It was mayhem, stuff for the history books, but a pain to watch. And I'm still pissed of it needed to be two of my favorite teams instead of France - Germany or some shit >:( A rematch would be great, and I don't think it'd be anything like this again, that was just the way things went, but it's not like the two teams have any reason to hate each other that much

Yeah, the Dutch should cruise to the semi's..Spain could very well stumble and if history proves us correct, they will - but i dont think this time, this team is too solid and those teams are too weak this year.

4 hours until the Portugal game, cant wait! Scolari has made 5 changes to the lineup apparently

The apparent lineup:

Treinador Luiz Felipe Scolari
1 | Ricardo GR
13 | Miguel LD
15 | Pepe DC
16 | Ricardo Carvalho DC
2 | Paulo Ferreira LE
18 | Miguel Veloso MD
6 | Raul Meireles MD
10 | Moutinho MO
17 | Quaresma AD
7 | Ronaldo AV
23 | Hélder Postiga AV

Scolari also said he'll use all 3 subs, I imagine:
Nani For Ronaldo from the beginning of the 2nd half
Alves/Meira For Carvalho 60th minute
?? about the third maybe Ribiero for Ferreira

Don't think it's gonna be that high, although this goes to show just how strong Portugal is at the monent. 7/10 field players straight off the bench and it's still all quality. Nevertheless, lapsed as they might be, I think the Swiss will at least try to leave this tournament in style and maybe with a point. I doubt they're gonna get there, but a 4-0 would be pretty damn harsh.

...props on providing the line-up by the way

I thought they changed the rules for this tournament: cards are removed after the quarter finals, to prevent players from missing the final. That's what I heard.

Besides, does anyone know why the final standings in the groups are not based on respectively points, goal balance, number of goals scored, etc...? I mean, Switzerland is equal in points with Czech Rep and they have a better goal balance, yet they're still considered 4th in the group. The same can be said about the premature conclusion that Spain will be the #1 in group D (what if Spain loses 1-0 to Greece, and Sweden manage to win 3-0 from Russia? That would mean Sweden would be the team with a better goal balance whilst being equal in points)... That stuff is odd. Switzerland deserve to be #3 in their group, yet the UEFA ranks them 4th!
Title: Re: OFFICIAL EURO 2008 THREAD
Post by: Elevz on June 15, 2008, 02:55:59 PM
Oh, nevermind. I already found out: for some strange reason, UEFA considers head-to-head results more important than overall results. The UEFA fucked up there.

Czech Republic and Switzerland are ranked by their head-to-head records:

    * Czech Republic – 3 pts (1:0 vs Switzerland)
    * Switzerland - 0 pts (0:1 vs Czech Republic)

(wiki.com)

And that also explains why Spain is already the winner of group D: they beat both the contestants for the second spot.

What an evening, quite a few things to comment on here.

SWITZERLAND - PORTUGAL: Being Swiss and a fan of the Portuguese, I watched that one, although constantly ticked off about missing the game that really mattered. Flattering as a 2-0 for Switzerland is, it's embarassing for the Portuguese. Has to be said, the Swiss are not as totally abysmal as some people tried to make them look after that 2nd-round knockout, but this B-selecao just demonstrated 3 things: 1. They might be good players, but not a bunch of Decos, let alone Ronaldos, 2. they looked so aware of that they didn't even try to impress Scolari and go for a spot in the A-team and 3. they never played together as a team, and that was visible throughout the game. And the 1-0 was a beautiful goal, period.

Still, of course, no one deserved to get past group stages less than the referee. Lichtsteiner brutally takes down Nani in the penalty area...goal kick, yeah right. Then his assistants try to live up to him and make an offside decision that was so obviously wrong I was sure about it myself before seeing the replay...and then Barnetta gets his way for pretty much diving, although there might have been sooome contact there, but still....

It just sucks all the undeserved luck was distributed to Switzerland's opponents when it mattered, now that it's finally vice versa, no one has to give a shit. It's still cool to see them win and it's good to see Köbi Kuhn (the manager, who will be replaced by Ottmar Hitzfeld now) doesn't have to leave a total loser, because he's done some good work.

...and I don't think this will really stop Portugal. The Germans better watch videos of the first two games, not of the B-team being lame.

CZECH REPUBLIC - TURKEY

Maybe I should have watched this, but I only caught the last two minutes of extra time. What a fucking game...having seen only the highlights, I'm no one to comment on deserved or undeserved, but it looks like Turkey really came back strong and Cech is not the only one who fucked up, they analyzed the goals on ZDF (German TV) after the game. I saw the Voolkan thing live, it was a bit of a Materazzi-Zidane thing: Koller was a jerk to run into Voolkan like that and afterwards go and start bitching about it to him, but if you can't keep it verbal in that moment, that's just unprofessional and you deserve no better.

Turkey - Croatia should be fun.

And I agree with Mauzip: The bunch of assholes widely known as UEFA fucked up on this one, too: 3 of the 4 teams that were already definite winners of their groups this mornings got there due to this head-to-head shit. Turkey, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden and Russia could all theoretically still be No. 1 if it weren't for that. This rule just makes it so much more predictable: Ok, so teams get the opportunity of testing some players usually sitting on that bench, but you see what it got us today...

Yup, was really embarrassing for us. I was very disappointed with our play; i expected much more from Quaresma, Veloso and Nani at the very least those 3..ya the first goal was nice, no doubt.

Yeah I thought Nani deserved a penalty on that play as well, ohh well..U talkin bout the disallowed Postiga goal? I thought that was onside as well..yea WOW that penalty shot was such a hardcore dive, i can't believe he got that call..

As long as this does not fuck with the Portuguese confidence, i'm cool..

Both Nani's penalty and Postiga's goal were obvious, I watched replays and even the Swiss commentators wouldn't have dreamed of lying about the facts. Barnetta's penalty was 90% dive, maybe it was 10% foul though, still of course, Nani not getting one and him yes ::)

It wasn't that bad a dive though, I would have just kept the game going as a referee, no yellow to Barnetta, since there was some contact. It wasn't like this:
http://www.youtube.com/v/8W00d3yJKl4&hl=en

I do think there was some Austrian sympathy from the referee in that game, but like you said, as long as it doesn't stop the Portuguese from playing great football when all their main players are on the pitch, it's no big deal. Plus, again, the Swiss really weren't too bad in the second half and the victory wasn't that undeserved since the Portuguese got really lame.

^nah the swizz victory was deserved for sure, i was just pointing out some referee faults

aw well, the best way i can put it if is that if there needed to be a game for portugal in this tournament where we'd:

a) play awful
b) have a disallowed goal that should of counted
c) not have a penalty awarded when it was warranted
d) have the other team get a non-deserving penalty

let it be the game we just lost.

I was going to respond by saying something about how the Germans never impress but always get far, but then I was looking at a list of recent matches between The Netherlands and Germany... In the last decade, the Germans didn't win once. Silly me for thinking of making a compliment about their immortality. Statistics are on your side though... LOL alright smegma..its not just I love in a European oriented community, that almost has nothing to do with it; I don't just randomly route for portugal because i like them, my parents are portuguese and i've grown up and have been raised by my parents in a WAY more Portuguese fashion than Canadian and due to that, i consider myself to really be Portuguese (as dumb as that may sound 2 u, i dont expect u 2 get it, its not your situation) and have pretty much been raised to be Portuguese altogether.

I wish we had another Portuguese-Canadian on this board, he'd tell u exactly i aint bullshittin, there's millions of us (literally) in Canada (assuming his family all came from Portugal like mine and parents by the "old fashion" portuguese way lol).

I'm not sure. Before the tournament, I predicted a 2-1 win for Italy. This could well end in a 1-1 draw with Romania advancing...

This is completely open IMO. Both teams have not been convincing, but France even less than Italy. I can see Romania scoring against the Dutch B-Team, too.

Gut feeling tells me Italy or Romania rather than France, but it's a gut feeling and that's it.

                 Stekelenburg

Boulahrouz   Heitinga   Bouma   De Cler

         De Zeeuw    Engelaar

Van Persie     Afellay         Robben

                    Huntelaar

No matter which way you put it, that still is anything but a weak line-up. I'm a little concerned about Bouma, De Cler and De Zeeuw though. Looks like a 2-1 win for Holland would be likely. The offense will be very good, although players like Sneijder, Van der Vaart and Van Nistelrooij will definately be missed.

Huh? Like others have pointed out, the Dutch are invincible for now and assuming that you know about it, I guess you meant they're both going home...? No one excluded the possibility of Romania advancing as far as I can see, but both Italy and France will have to win, which should make for a very interesting game not very likely to result in a draw. That's what France OR Italy is about, I think dem niggas know wassup wit Romania

Maybe I'm just a negative person, but when I say "Italy or France", I would never speak about who will advance, but who will fail. So, when I say "Italy and France", I say they both gon' fail, not that both teams are about to advance. No need to jump all over a nigga because of that. Romania is the team most likely to advance out of the 3, that was my point. Holland should have no interest in keeping either Italy or France in the tournament.

not necessarily..a red doesn't always follow if a penalty shot is awarded; romania's penalty didnt result in an italian red and nor did portugal's carvalho get a red at the world cup when he fouled henry who was awarded a penalty; carvalho got a yellow and thats what the french player should of got.

if the last defender brings down an opposing player in the box then its a straight red card son.. and with the romania / italy game penatly the ref was right not to give panucci a red because he wasnt the last defender.

that is not necessarily a rule as you two are making it seem to be; I see as Panucci didn't get a straight red because the foul didnt warrant such a harsh punishment (the severity of the tackle) and neither did the foul today.

But the important thing is with France he was the last defender, so it's an automatic red card. The French players didn't complain much, so that tells you everything.

I don't understand you guys. You always have something to bitch about when it comes to Italy. The rule is so simple, and it says Abidal had to be ejected. He didn't even complain so why are you doing it? He was the last French defender and Toni had a clear chance of scoring. It's Abidal's fault. Or, to say it better, it's Domenech's fault that he played with Abidal central defender against Toni & Cassano. And LMAO @ Boumsong being selected over Mexes! Italy didn't robb at all. We played pretty well against Romania and very well against France. We had a game where Holland destroyed us. But we're still here. Like usual. Ready for the big dance.

...it's just the way it is with Italy. They almost always sneak past group stages, no matter how unconvincing. But while the overall performance in all 3 games was nothing to get excited about, it's not like there was anything wrong about them coming out as the winners today. From what I've seen, the Romanians didn't really make a great performance against the Dutch and France was unlucky about Ribéry, but the penalty was straight stupidity. Lunatic, of course this is a red card...Toni was going straight for goal, Abidal, being the last defender, came from behind and fouled him, denying him a straight shot at goal from about 15 metres. I take it you dislike Italy, alright, that's actually kind of understandable from a neutral point of view in this tournament, but the referee doesn't even have the option of considering not giving red.

Overall the 2-0 victory was ok (merci à Henry), it's not like Italy looked like The Team About to Beat Spain, but it was an ok performance against an opponent who couldn't recover from what happened in the early stages and really didn't have much of an idea about how to become seriously dangerous. And I guess the 2-0 for Holland was ok too, so Italy hasn't been great, but there's nothing wrong about them coming in second, two of three other teams not having been any better.

Big props to Holland, finally. 9 points and 9:1 goals, that's amazing. I'll be cheering for them 8)

Yup, although I'd personally say it was decent against Romania and pretty decent against France, that's what's up. I'm kinda repeating myself, but what I agree about with Antonio is: What is there to be bitching about? Italy didn't qualify because of some special rule, undeserved luck or bribes. They qualified because they were the second best team in Group C, period. Holland came in first because they fucked everyone up and got 9 points. Italy got 4 points. Romania got 2. France got 1. And don't tell me ROM or FRA were better in any way...ROM was a bit of a surprise, because it's not a big name like the others, but end of the day, they scored only one goal neatly prepared for them by a guy named Zambrotta, that's nothing to write home about. And France was a complete disappointment.

And good point about Abidal not complaining...props to him for that by the way, I'll freely admit any Italian defender would have had a discussion with the referee.

Man what's your problem? Are you totally ignorant about football or are you just hating on Italy for personal reasons? Cause what you're saying is not making sense at all. Italy qualified to the quarters by survivng to the "Group of death". They didn't make 9 points like Holland, but they still managed to beat France 2-0 and make 4 points. That said, Italy is historically known for having slow starts and strong finishes, while Spain is known for the opposite. You should never do the mistake of underrating a team like Italy who's used to win big trophies (unlike Spain). The last time somebody did it, we won the World Cup by beating Germany in their house. Yeah. We will play with De Rossi and Aquilani in the middle.

Again, I can co-sign on Antonio's statements. Spain has clearly been better than Italy so far and they sure have the potential to murder them, but so far, what has happened in this tournament is all according to a bunch of old rules:

1. Italy has a slow start and is unconvincing.
2. Italy still survives the group
3. Spain has a great team and starts off beautifully, easily winning their group

...that happens all the time. Usually, what happens next is:

4. Italy gets better and goes far
5. Spain fucks up.

I'm not saying this has to happen and I love this Spanish team. But to think that Italy's gonna be cannon fodder is naive, same for Portugal - Germany, with the Germans it's never over until it's frickin OVER.

Italy well deserved to advance. Romania should have finished it off against the French, but they failed. Italy was overrun by the Dutch and didn't really impress against Romania, which is a hard opponent anyway (I don't see why everyone counted them out - they're tougher than leather). Italy ended on top when Romania failed and France never even got anywhere near. Not that the French sucked, but it just wasn't working out for them.

Spain - Italy will be a great game. The Spanish have already proved that they can perform really well, although they're not invulverable. As has been said before, the Italians never get weaker during tournaments, only stronger. Although I still think their team "isn't quite what it once was," at least they'll give Spain a hard time.

At the same time, did anyone notice the strength of just about the entire Dutch selection? Their B-team had some trouble with the match flow early in the game, yet even players who normally wouldn't play one second of a tournament like this, got something done against Romania that the Italian and French main teams wouldn't accomplish. I'm fairly well impressed.

Well, they were both injured at the start of the tournament. On a midfield with Sneijder, Van der Vaart and Kuyt, with Van Nistelrooij as a striker... Who are you going to leave out, in order to let the fragile Van Persie and Robben play? Kuyt and Van Nistelrooij? Or Van der Vaart?

Lunatic, I think you're getting some people wrong. No one says Italy will definitely beat Spain, the way it's been going, Spain should win, but some people are not quite ruling out the possibility. There are tournament teams and teams that usually fuck up in tournaments. There's a reason Italy has 4 world cup trophies and Spain has none, and part of that reason is definitely this tournament thing. The Euros have tended to be a bit less predictable (Denmark, Greece...), but the general logic is not all that different.

really: how spain or italy played is obsolet, it doesn't mean shit. Your argument (lunatic) is that Spain looked good so far or sth. like that, but this only comes  from the Russia game because Russia played very dumb and invited them to score. Italy won't invite them, they will destroy the game and their offense. Plus Italy wasn't that bad. You base your opinion on one or two games, which can give u a wrong picture of both teams. The same goes for Holland: Italy won't make the same mistakes again, and Italy's great strength always was their cleverness and effectivness.
Sorry that I quoted you, but I wanted to elaborate ;)

I am 90 percent sure Italy will beat Spain. I would even bet on it

what does succhiami il cazzo mean?
Cazzo is dick, maybe you can find out about "succhiare" yourself :)

Jan Itor: 90% wow, that's pretty confident. To me this is completely open, but you're right about the Russian invitation thing, it was different against Sweden already. Ok, to be fair, Sweden played cattenaccio that would make Rehagel proud, but still, it's not like it was a walk in the park for Spain. If you're efficient about destroying the Spanish offense, cutting off Xavi and Iniesta and quickly switching to attacking yourself, then this Spanish team does become vulnerable, great as they might be.

If Gattsuso would play, they wouldn't even make it past the midfield without breaking into tears :D

Seriously, people have a wrong idea both about Italy and Spain based on the first game
Holland surprised them in the first game, but be sure that won't happen again.
ok, 90% may be to high, but also just because of the loss of the Cannavaro/Nesta wall.

Dasselbe gilt übrigens auch gegen Ronaldo und co: Hinter der Mittellinie muss der Schmerz regieren ;D Am Besten nominieren wir noch Maik Franz und Bernd Hollerbach nach

Yep, Cannavaro is really, really missing...there will be no second Holland, no, but I don't say Italy will really be favored. That game can go any way.

Wenn eure Defensive auf demselben Niveau spielt wie bisher, wird hinter eurer Mittellinie Ronaldo regieren, oder aber jemand sieht rot :D Aber mit Deutschland ist es ja wie mit Italien....

Elevz, Eleven, 11z, Eleven 2 Three, and now for Euro 2008 it's "It Takes Eleven." I'm sorry if I got people confused ;)

Anyway, I hope you realize I was making a sarcastic statement with that "I'm pretty sure the length of Lunatic's penis depends on the number of trophies his national team has won." In other words: somehow Elano seems to think the history of your national team is a valid argument to discredit your opinion. Whatever. Well, I've got to say that the Germans outclased the Portuguese. Ronaldo was inaffective, and Nani when he came on was just terrible. He is not international class yet. His final ball and decision making is awful. Obviously I'm hoping he will get better, but he has alot of maturing to do. As for Germany, how Podolski doesn't play regularly for his club is a mystery. He is class. Bit of a push by Ballack for the 3rd goal, but in the end I think Germany deserved it and are worthy of their pre-tournement favourites tag.

Don't forget I'm a United fan. That was a one off. A couple of times he shot when he shouldn't have. But then, Ronaldo was like this when he joined United, now look at him. I guess he can only get better. But for now he is just not good enough.

Yeah it's truly a mystery how some players excel for the national team and never do fuck all for their club. I saw every Bayern game this season and dude just straight up sucked. He was just not nearly as good as he is now. Same with Gomez, only the other way around. Great for Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, a true bitch in this tournament.

I would say Schweinsteiger was even worse than Podolski. I think you could see that Podolski improved in the last games for bayern, but Schweinsteiger had like one good game in the whole season.

As for the Portuguese, I was very disappointed. They showed no ambition to win this game despite they had the better players. I lost a bet because I am usually pessimistic and therefore wasted my money on Portugal. I guess I'll never invest my money in Iberian teams again, since it's always the same with them. I thought Porugal could be different, but they are exactly the same. Now believe me the same will happen between Spain and Italy, the situation between those two games is too identical

And I want Turkey in the semi-finals, there will be civil war in Köln and Berlin ;D

Plus I wanna see Germany-Netherlands as the final :)

yeah, that would be the dream final.

I don't mind the Germans winning because they deserved it this time, but I was actually rooting for Portugal. There goes my poule - I predicted Portugal would win the tournament in a final against the Dutch. Portugal didn't deserve to make it past Germany though, so it's perfectly okay this way.

I have more understanding for Schweinsteiger because he has a tough time doing his thang in Bayern when Ribery is a similiar, yet much better player. Both are offensive wings who like to keep the ball a lot. So it's hard for Schweinsteiger to elevate his game when Ribery is on the same pitch and obviously the better option. With Podolski, Klose played a terrible second half of the season and he had every chance to prove himself, yet he didn't. Right now he's playing really well though. I hope his stock keeps on rising, and we can sell him to some naive team for like 30 mil. Then sign Gomez whose stock is falling like a skydiver for like 18 mil. That'd be great.

Ronaldo was alright, it was Bosingwa, Pepe & Ferreira that were the problem - how that first goal:

A) gets to the middle
b) ferreira not marked schweninsteger (?) properly

and that 2nd goal those 3 defenders are part of the people who randomly allowed klose to get in behind them - u can blame a few more on this play

the only goal that was at all ricardo's fault was the 3rd, but that shouldnt of even counted anyway.

Just because Ronaldo is a little crybaby, that doesn't apply to the whole Portuguese team ::) Besides, yesterday, I didn't see any Portuguese crying, except.......Ronaldo. And even he had a reason that time. Some people act like Ronaldo's character = Portuguese mentality. And yeah, Lunatic's analysis is pretty much correct.
