news Too Short & E-40 Plan Collabo Album - By : Chad - October 29, 2010

Too Short recently spoke to PyramidWest about he and fellow Bay Area rapper E-40 planning to release a collaborative project in the coming year.

"We're both shooting for a 2011, middle-of-the-year release," Short Dog was quoted as saying.

Too Short and E-40 shared over 10 years as Jive Records labelmates, and while they had their share of collaborations, some fans always wondered why there weren’t more group efforts from the Bay Area pair. There was talk once before during their time at Jive of an album between the two tentatively-titled "The History Channel", but according to Too Short, the same label that brought them together also wanted to keep them apart.

“For years and years me and E-40 have been friends—before we both signed to Jive, during the entire time we both signed to Jive, and we still remain friends to this day,” Short said, during an interview with PyramidWest. “While we were on Jive, we always wanted to make an album together. We figured we’re on the same label, lets take it to the label and say, ‘Hey, do an E-40/Too Short album.’ But that’s not what they wanted. To this day, we still don’t know why they didn’t want us to collaborate, because if we made an album seven or eight years ago, it probably would have been probably much more significant than it would be now.”

The two have appeared on numerous tracks such as the Ant Banks-produced classics like “Rapper’s Ball,” Cali-O," & "Domestic Violence,", “Show Me What You Working Wit,” "Just Like Dope," as well as also being featured together on Ant Banks’ pair of T.W.D.Y. albums on songs like ”Pervin’” and ”Game Shooters”. And while about a dozen more collaborations have surfaced recently, including this summer’s “Bitch,” Short says there’s even more to come

“We’re defying the odds of what Hip Hop’s supposed to be,” Too Short added. “I’m personally 44, and I think I’ve got 40 by about two years. And we’ve got a hot song moving around this summer. Of course we’re still entertaining the idea of doing a project together. You’ve heard quite a few duets, and we have twice as many songs as that which you’ve never heard.”

Short explained that the currently untitled project would likely be released in 2011, after the release of his digital album, Respect The Pimpin’.

“Part of what my legacy is right now is to tear down that stereotype that Hip Hop has an age limit,” Short explained. “I’m doing it to the fullest right along with my man E-40 and a couple other OG’s out there [like] Ice Cube.”

news MC Hammer Awarded World Wide Humanitarian Award - By : Chad - October 15, 2010

Allhiphop.com is reporting that Oakland, California rap star MC Hammer will be honored with the World Wide Humanitarian Award during the Kick-A-Thon, which will benefit a local family who lost their father to cancer and now may lose their home.

MC Hammer’s appearance is help raise the profile of the fundraising event for the Platt family, who may lose their house after Florence's 38-year-old husband John died on September 15th from cancer.

In order to raise money for Florence and her two children, Ryen and Kayla, ten bay area Taekwondo schools and the Mountain View Christian Center will host the Kick-A-Thon.

On October 16th, students from each school will throw as many kicks as possible in a two-minute period, with financial donors making a financial donation based on that amount.

The event was puled together by Master Johnny Kang of Kang's Taekwondo Academy.

“I have kids of my own and can only imagine what the Platt's are going through right now,” said Master Kang. “I’m pleased this event will help them on a financial level. But I’m just as pleased so many kids, families and individuals can come together, compassionately and generously, in support of our fellow man. It’s a profound lesson for the kids and an extraordinary act of love.”

The Kick-A-Thon For Humanity will be held on October 16th at the Mountain View Christian Center at 5000 Amaryllis St., in Oakley, California, starting at 10:00 AM.

news Ras Kass Signs To 40 Glocc's Zoo Life Imprint - By : Rud - October 13, 2010

Big Bad 40 aka 40 Glocc has had a busy 2010 already having featured on Dubcnn countless times including an Interview in July and tracks Welcome To California Remix featuring E-40, Snoop Dogg, Too Short, Xzibit & Seven which was produced By Darren Vegas as well as the Ray J featured Damn.

The relentless hustle has not just been in the streets and the studio but interestingly enough it has centred in office buildings.

As President of his own record label Zoo Life, who reside under the Fontana/Universal umbrella, the entrepreneur has shifted gears quite a bit. "When you deal with corporate America, no one has time for excuses and you are held accountable for every little thing, that’s gangsta to me. It’s a say what you mean and mean what you say kind of business. Me building my own label has forced me to move forward in some areas that I can honestly say work for my own benefit. I’m about getting this money every way possible, feel me," explains 40.

That work has resulted in the news that one of the West Coasts most prized rap possessions, Ras Kass has signed with the Zoo Life imprint.

Two weeks ago, Complex magazine reported Ice Cube’s Top 10 West Coast MC’s and sure enough, new Zoo Life member, Ras Kass was in the line up. "I’ve always been a fan of Ras Kass plus he’s my homey. With me gaining the opportunity to have a real label with distribution I automatically want artists with good music to come eat with me," says 40 Glocc.

The music as well as the recent signing, coupled with a whistle stop tour of Canada over the next 3 nights aims to solidify Zoo Life for the coming months.

October 13, 2010: Mojo’s, Whistler, Canada
October 14, 2010: Bar None, Vancover, Canada
October 15, 2010: Empire, Edmonton, Canada

Stay tuned to Dubcnn for the latest on 40 Glocc, Zoo Life and Ras Kass.

news Legendary Rodger Clayton (Uncle Jamm's Army) Passes Away - By : Chad - October 12, 2010

On October 10, 2010 west coast Hip-Hop lost another legend when Rodger Clayton, co-founder of LA's legendary Uncle Jamm's Army, passed away following a heart attack. Along with Gid Martin, Clayton (aka Mr Prinze) took Uncle Jamm's Army (an extended collective of LA promoters, DJs, producers & emcees,) to wide fame when, back in the early 80's, they would stage huge DJ parties at places like the Los Angeles Sports Arena where they would pack in five to ten thousand people. During the 1980's Clayton and the Army reigned supreme on the West Coast and beyond playing hip-hop, but specializing in electro-hop, a direct descendent of New York's electro old school hip-hop (a la Afrika Bambaataa).

Officially active during the years 1984 to 1988 the nexus of the group dated back to the late seventies when Clayton and Martin initially formed Unique Dream Entertainment. That was 1978. Five years later the Clayton led group had morphed into the regionally popular Uncle Jamm's Army with the music mastermind wisely enlisting many talented up-and-coming hip-hop emcees and DJs to flesh out the ranks and ensure popularity with a growing audience for hip-hop. This extended lineup featured such notable members as the pre- gangsta rap Ice-T, his DJ partner Chris "The Glove" Taylor, the Egyptian Lover, the Unknown DJ, and many later LA rap luminaries including DJ Pooh and DJ Battlecat.

Big fans of funkateer George Clinton, the name Clayton and company chose was a direct nod to Funkadelic's 1979 album Uncle Jam Wants You. And like the typically flamboyant Clinton led P-Funk ensembles, known for their wild onstage attire, Uncle Jamm's Army would also wear costumes onstage although usually not as brightly colorful, favoring green army fatigues. Tapping into Clayton's promotional skills, wisely bringing name rap acts out from New York like Kurtis Blow, Run DMC and Whodini, the Uncle Jamm's Army parties became a phenomenon attracting thousands of people to large auditorium and stadium scale venues like the L.A. Sports Arena in their own area and the Richmond Auditorium up north in the Bay Area. Luckily I caught one of their gigs there, circa when the crew's Egyptain Lover's "My Beat Goes Boom"/"What Is a DJ if he can't scratch" was a big hit. In the early days their LA parties were typically roller skate events, sponsored in part by stations KGFJ and KDAY, where the DJs would spin funk records like Zapp's "Doo Wa Ditty." By a certain stage Uncle Jamm's Army's name alone was enough of a draw. Of course having their own records out which were radio hits only helped increase these crowds.

Via their own Freak Beat record label Uncle Jamm's Army released a series of singles beginning with 1984's "Dial-A-Freak," which personified their Cali development of the electronic hip-hop sound that originated in New York. That record was basically a Clayton/Egyptian Lover production collaboration with Clayton doing much of the beats and the Egyptian Lover, while sharing some of the beats production, handling all the mic duties in a unique style that he would continue after going solo shortly thereafter: a sing-songy rap style that mined Prince's sexually fueled freaky banter and also lyrically referenced Egypt and the Pharaohs.

LA community activist and longtime hip-hop community member General Jeff, who was a member of Uncle Jamm's Army credits the man with being, "responsible for various radio station mix shows which featured rap music on KGFJ, KACE, KJLH and of course paved the way for now legendary KDAY." He says that Clayton was also the first to go from record promoter to recording artist & producer and that he "never got the true recognition he deserved."

Rest in peace Rodger Clayton and thank you!

news Audio & Video Catch-up - By : LilJay - October 11, 2010

Here's a pile of audio and video that was supposed to go up in the past week (and beyond), but slipped through the cracks. But all of it is worth to at least give it the late treatment.

No One (Dae One & Noni Spitz) have just dropped a 7-track EP called "Clearance (Substance Abuse)" in prepartion of their upcoming album "The Substance", due out in November. This is a free project and it's giving you a treat for having to wait for the album being pushed back. Now here are a few exclusive songs and remixes that you wont find anywhere else from the duo.

No One - Clearance (Substance Abuse) EP (Free Download)

Terrace Martin released yet another video off his super dope & free project "Here, My Dear". And for one of my favorite songs, may I add: They picked "The Makings of You" for the next visual, and, as you should already know, it features Kurupt and Overdoz. Once again directed by Calmatic.

Terrace Martin Feat. Kurupt & Overdoz - The Makings of You (Video)

Also, be sure to watch the exclusive Dubcnn interview with Terrace Martin if you missed it.

Fresh off of the "Freedom Express Line Tour" with musical partner Jansport J and Sony/XOXO Records artist Cymarshall Law, Hawdwerk releases the debut video off of his mixtape "Off The Clock". The visual is for the track called "You So Craaazy" featuring Curtiss King and Noa James. Directed by Danlen for HeavenHell Entertainment.

Hawdwerk - You So Craaazy Feat. Curtiss King & Noa James (Video)

Dowload the "Off The Clock" mixtape on Hawdwerk's Bandcamp page. His debut solo album "The Graveyard Shift" will be released by Cov Original Music later this quarter.

Hot off the heels of his free project "Rocky Maivia", Moe Green has just released a new video for the song "Iced Out Lifestyle," produced by Indecent The Slapmaster. This video is the first to come out from the Vallejo's forthcoming free, seven song EP collaboration with OnSmash.com, set for a November release.

Moe Green - Iced Out Lifestyle (Video)

About a year after dropping their slept-on album "Uzi Does It", the West Coast collective Get Busy Committee have released a remix of their single "Dancin' On Ya Grave". Group members Ryu (Styles of Beyond), Apathy (Demigodz, Army of the Pharaohs) and Scoop Deville are joined by heavyweights Murs, Xzibit and Pull Wall.

Dope track, but what are other choice do you have if the line-up alone makes it worth checking out?

Get Busy Committee Feat. Murs, Xzibit & Paul Wall - Dancin' On Ya Grave (Remix) (Audio)

For more info on the group, check out the video interview we conducted with them around the time their album came out.

LIV of L.A.U.S.D. released a video for "Bounce Back", a song featured on his debut album "LIV Pronounced L4". This is the first visual off the project, which came out in July for free download. "Bounce Back" features fellow member of the L.A.U.S.D. production team, Polyester, and vocalist Felisa Mirasol. Directed by LIV and Direct. Video spotted at 2DBz.

Visit LIV's Bandcamp page to download the entire project for free.

Bay Area producer/rapper Droop-E has recently partnered up with clothing lines BLVCK SCVLE and Diamond Supply Co. for the release of his highly anticipated mixtape titled "BLVCK Diamond Life". This body of work demonstrates his natural talent for rapping and producing by blending the laid-back, smooth tones of Sade with Hip-Hop – and he's showcasing the Bay from a different perspective. Features include his pops E-40, Ya Boy, J. Valentine, Matt Blaque, Laroo, amongst others.

Well put together project which gets the thumbs up, (nothing else would have been accepted when coming up with a concept involving Sade's name).

news Life Ain’t Easy by Seven - By : Jonathan - October 6, 2010

A while ago, Dubcnn put together an open contest for our community that involved producer C Major, who is known for his work with Ca$his / Shady Records. We received a huge response from all of the many entries, even more than we anticipated – and the contest was an overall tremendous success.

One of the song winners was an artist by the name of Seven who hails from the West Coast and right now his song called “Life Ain’t Easy” that won this exclusive Dubcnn contest is being played on Power 106 in LA – the top ranked Rhythmic formatted radio station in the United States. Not only is the song being played in Los Angeles – but also on other commercial and college radio stations scattered throughout the country and it is quickly gaining momentum on the airwaves. It’s a great feeling to know that if it wasn’t for Dubcnn, this song wouldn’t even exist or would it be playing on major radio today.

Seven had the following statement for Dubcnn:

"I’ve been following Dubcnn for a few years now and I like how you all keep the fans updated with all the latest news on all [the] West Coast music and its artists. On one of my many days logging on to the site, I saw Dubcnn had posted a contest for artist’s to submit a song for a chance to be produced by C Major from Shady Records. I submitted a song, and soon after I received an email, with an instrumental saying I had been chosen to participate in this contest. I knocked the song out and sent it back in for it to be judged by the staff at Dubcnn. A little while later, I received an email from Dubcnn saying I was the winner of the contest. Honestly, I couldn't believe it. I don't think I have ever won anything in my life. I thought the song was cool, but I never imagined it would win. Now a year later, we have shot a video for the song and it is currently playing on over 15 commercial, college, and internet radio stations throughout the U.S. I would like to thank everyone at Dubcnn for the support they have given me and for giving Indie Artists like myself the opportunity to get heard and to connect with a bigger audience through their website and forums. Thanks Dubcnn for making the West Coast shine once again."

Lisa Thomas from LRT Music Group (and also Seven’s manager) had the following thing to say about “Life Ain’t Easy” and how Dubcnn impacted this single:

Seven has a lot of great music. He gave me a CD of several songs that he had just completed and, as I was listening, I heard a song called “Life Ain’t Easy.” Instantly, I knew it was a great song and I loved how the lyrics portrayed the struggles we all have and go through. I asked him about this song and he told me how the birth of this hit was through Dubcnn. So, I took it to Power 106 -- met with E-Man (program director) and Seven also went to Power 106 and he did a meet and greet with the radio stations and all the DJ’s loved it and they put it on the “New @ 2 Mixed Show” and keep playing the song as it has a large request from the audience. It is being played now with the heavy hitters, he is in good company. With Seven’s raw talent with true words and emotion, backed with C Major’s incredible beat, not too mention LRT behind him, Seven has a masterpiece and it’s all because of Dubcnn. Thank you all so very much!”

Seven has his album dropping through LRT Music Group soon and right now he has a mixtape out called “Public Enemy” by Julian Ramirez of The Cali Untouchables that features Jayo Felony, Baby Bash, C Murder, Spider Loc, L.V. (from South Central Cartel) and L.A Nash.

Here is the song again:

Seven – Life Ain’t Easy (Produced By C-Major)

Congrats to Seven, C Major, LRT Music Group for much continued success. Stay tuned to Dubcnn for information on Seven and also be on the lookout for another exclusive interview with him coming soon. With major radio play like this, life seems to finally be getting easier for Seven!

news Did I Hear That Right? Chico & Coolwadda Reform! - By : Rud - October 4, 2010

Hard to believe but its getting on for ten years since Chico & Coolwadda dropped their 2001 debut album "Wild 'N Tha West" and just over six years since their sophomore - and last album - "Parallel" hit stores.

I use the word last rather than final as, despite not having worked together in the studio or on stage for over 5 years, the duo have just told Dubcnn that they are reuniting for a new album that is scheduled to drop next year and they are currently in talks to join Daz and Kurupt on a DPG tour after they were the special guests at a Palm Spring show this past weekend.

For now all we know for sure is that this weekend the duo will hit the studio for the first time in half a decade to record with Mr Kushington and Genesis Ian of the Lab Ratz. More info will be available on Dubcnn soon but in the meantime - for those of you that know C&C as well as the youngsters who might - take a trip back to 2001 with the classic "High Come Down" featuring Nate Dogg.

Chico & Coolwadda - High Come Down (Feat. Nate Dogg)

Rest assured though that Coolwadda now known as Coolie High will continue to release his planned solo music, including the "Coolie Say's Hes High" mixtape on Dubcnn, the project we dropped the first single from last month called Paranoid with Bozak Black Sox.

news Exclusive Interview With Best-Selling Author Joy King - By : Chad - October 4, 2010

Lately, rap artists are getting into the lucrative book publishing business, with Jay-Z set to release his “Decoded” book in November – just in time for the Holiday season. Fabolous is also thinking about following suit and diving right in – while Eminem and 50 Cent have already cashed in and made a ton of money from the manuscript world.

Dubcnn checked in with best-selling author Joy Deja King to try and find out as much as we could about the publishing business and learn about her upcoming book.

A few months back, this author grabbed headlines on MediaTakeOut and even angered Sean “Puffy” Combs baby-mama with what was said, which we also discuss here in this exclusive interview.

This is a very interesting read for the West Coast’s #1 online community. As ever, be sure to leave your feedback in our forums or email them to chad@dubcnn.com.

news Ice Cube Accepts Common's Movie Offer - By : Chad - October 1, 2010

According to AllHipHop, West Coast Hip-Hop veteran Ice Cube has accepted former rival Common's offer to possibly work together in a movie in the near future.

During an exclusive interview with AllHipHop.com, Ice Cube replied to Common's statement last week about wanting to work with his former foe.

Common and Ice Cube were engaged in a vicious war of words in the mid-1990's.

The situation almost turned violent until The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan held a meeting at his Chicago mansion and urged the rising rap stars to peacefully resolve their differences.

Since then, both artists have gone on to have immense success on the silver screen.

Ice Cube, who recently produced the series Are We There Yet? for TNT, has starred in groundbreaking flicks like Boyz N Tha Hood, in addition to executive producing and starring in his own hit movies like Friday and Barbershop.

"When we had our little issues in the 90s we sat down with Farrakhan and he told us why we needed to be brothers and squash it," Ice Cube told AllHipHop.com. "Since then, I aint never had an ill feeling towards Common. We've seen each other on several occasions and it's all love, like it never happened. I'd be down to do a movie anytime. Anytime."

Common, who has starred in movies like Terminator Salvation, Smokin' Aces, American Gangster and Just Wright, recently wrapped up filming on Hell on Wheels, a time-piece about the Transcontinental Railroad set in the 1860's.

During an interview with AllHipHop.com last week, Common revealed that he would like to work with Ice Cube on a movie, should the chance ever arise.

"Point blank, when Cube and I had beef, I was a fan of his first and foremost, I grew up like loving Cube," Common told AllHipHop.com. "I still respected him as an artist, but I had to come at him. It’s like a boxer; if somebody challenge you in the ring, you got to go at him. But we all good now, and maybe we can produce a movie together or something."

Ice Cube was very optimistic about working with Common in the future and noted that it only made sense, considering the amount of success both men have experienced in Hollywood.

"He's in Hollywood and I'm in Hollywood. We are both leading men and we can do this," Ice Cube told AllHipHop.com.

Ice Cube recently released his 9th album I Am The West on his independent label, Lench Mob Records.

news Too Short & Ice-T In "GhettoPhysics" Documentary - By : Chad - October 1, 2010

Three Hip-Hop icons will appear in the new documentary, “GhettoPhysics: Will The Real Pimps & Ho's Please Stand Up!”, which is presently screening. OG west coast pioneer Ice-T and Oakland, California's platinum game-spitter Too Short, along with legendary Bronx, New York emcee ,b>KRS-One
are set to appear in the film produced by Captured Light Films, which analyzes the correlation between the relationship of pimps and prostitutes, and the system of capitalism.

Based on the film’s director E. Raymond Brown’s novel Will the Real Pimps and Hos Please Stand Up: Peeping the Multi-leveled Global Game”, the film uses interviews, staged scenes, and satire to shed light on how the interplay between pimps and prostitutes is simply a variation of the power dynamic that exists in broader social, political and corporate relationships we all experience.

As the synopsis reads: “From the street to the boardroom, from the Hood to the Oval Office, its the same. The only difference is that while the street Pimps wear colorful clothes, and the streets Ho’s wear little at all.”

Along with Ice and Short, Dr. Cornel West, Fillmore Slim, Cynthia McKinney, Norman Lear and the film's director, E. Raymond Brown also appear in the documentary.
