 Today, one of the most successful songs in hip-hop history almost never was. The song in reference is called “Gangsta’s Paradise” and if it weren’t for the persistence of the original song owner, L.V, the world would have never experienced such a smash single. The song could have been performed with Prodeje from South Central Cartel, who L.V. first reached out to for the rap parts, however, schedules got in the way. Then, L.V. had to literally follow Coolio around for weeks to get him to do the song.
Dubcnn got the opportunity to sit down with L.V. Mr. Large Variety, one of the original members of the infamous South Central Cartel, to reflect back on “Gangsta’s Paradise”—the paradigm shift that has since left its mark on hip-hop forever. In this Dubcnn exclusive, L.V. shares with us his own personal feelings on his partner, Coolio’s recent and highly-publicized troubles with the law as he gets transparent and opens up about his near-death experience many years ago, to his current rebirth back into music through LRT Music Group.

“I knew that when I started G.R.I.T, JT The Bigga Figga was the best person to go to. So I hit him up on MySpace, asked him a few questions, and asked him if he could help me out. To my surprise, he hit me back, gave me a little bit of information to get the ball rolling, hooked up some features for an unbelievable deal, and told me how to use them. We took the Keak Da Sneak verse and used it on "Just Be You".”
Yash continues, “JT [The Bigga Figga] has been a huge help for me getting this label up and going and I really appreciate all his help, because he didn't need to help me out. He is one of the founders of the independent game and he taught people like Master P, Daz, and The Game about the independent industry works.”

 Straight from LA, CA and after 5 highly successful mixtapes (pushing north of 100K units sold) Custom Made (Bluff, Element, Scoobs and Six) returns with Street Cinema Vol: 6 The Lost Weekend (which will be released shortly).
The Lost Weekend is a compilation of tracks that were recorded during sessions for Truth Be Told (Rawkus/2007), Heavy Traffic (Custom Made/2007), Great Expectations (Custom Made/2008) and Original Dynasty (Babygrande/2008) and new tracks that were recorded with Six after his release from prison (Six was in prison for 2 years from 2007-2008 and is currently serving a 160-day sentence for parole violations).
Recently the group released the first video off the project, "Sunday Money". Check it out below, the video was directed by Evan Romoff.

 Its been a little while since we last featured K-Boy of The Bloc Boys but today we have some new music from the Blu Division rapper to share. While he continues to work hard on his debut album "Jerkin", he has hit us up with some news about mixtape projects in the work as well as some new music.
First up produced by Blu Division producers Drop And Bear is the club banger called "We Jerk" taken from his upcoming LP.

 The San Francisco Bay Area, known for its independent rappers and its problems with inner city youth dropping out of school, teams the two together to help ease the financial burden of the school system.
Rappers have joined together to make a CD for the purpose of generating revenue to be donated for much needed materials and canceled programs in our schools. This grass roots effort will help give optimism where limited hope exists as seen by our current dropout rate.
Kontac, a Bay Area rapper who was in part responsible for the film Beats by the Bay which featured MC Hammer, E-40 and Too Short is now embarking upon another project geared to help children stay in school.
Earlier this year we showcased the single from the upcoming album All Rap Aint Bad, today we have the music video to the song to share which again promotes strongly the important message, stay in school.

 Regular visitors will already be familiar with the Cerritos, CA up and comer Jihad. He recently reached out to various artists to get together and draw attention to one of the major issues in the world that needs resolving. Below we have some words from Jihad himself shedding light on the project:
"This song was put together by me in an effort to bring awareness to the situation in Gaza and make a call for peace on both sides. The song is a call for "peace", in regards to, the whole Palestine/Israel conflict going on over Gaza.
The track is produced by Grammy nominated and platinum selling producers, "Big 4D/The Secret Specialists" and it was mixed by "Lou Dog" of legendary rock group Sublime. The song has already received press and media coverage out in the Middle East and there are plans being worked out for a music video being shot and also for a Middle East tour/concert to take place with the acts being all the artists involved.
It took a collective effort from my camp Rebellion and my business partner/close friend, Joe Park, all the way down to my publicist, PR people and producers i work with to make this happen.
I commend everyone involved and ask that people really support these artists because all of this was done with no budget and everyone involved did it for free. We encourage everyone to spread this song to as many people as they can and help push the movement, "We Want Peace"."

 Daz Dillinger has been on his grind heavily, dropping new video left and right, promoting his upcoming solo album "Public Enemiez", which will be dropping simultaneously with the blockbuster movie "Public Enemy" coming this summer.

 It's been almost 2 years since we had new solo music from Defari on Dubcnn, July 2006 to be precised. That update focused around "Street Music," the follow up to 2003's "Odds & Evens" release.
That album contained the single featuring Dilated Peoples' Evidence entitled Make My Own which we dropped for download.
Since then Defari has been busy recording new music for a long awaited new album.
Last week we got hold of the first track to come from the new album - currently under the working title of "Work Hard, Play Harder" - the version we received was the Clean mix and as such we held off. Today we have the pleasure to premiere both mixes together for both downloading and/or streaming.
Defari linked up with DJ Khalil on this cut who showcases once again why his production abilities cannot be ignored - this track is a heater! Defari instructed the fans to drop their feedback on this as he completes the new album. Get on our forum to lay down opinions on this track.

 Earlier this year Treacherous Records artist One-2 released his highly anticipated mixtape UNO (Hosted by DJ Warrior & September 7th) for free download right here on dubcnn.
One-2 is back blazing the mixtape scene with a new cut taken from an upcoming Dj Far mixtape "Western Conference All Stars Special Edition: We Are The West". The cd is set to drop in May and the track we have to share is called "Machine Gun Rap Flow" and also features Crooked I on the intro.  Earlier this week we dropped an update on legendary gangsta soul singer Butch Cassidy. In that update we not only recapped some recent music but also told you how, at long last, he is finally free of restrictions that, until now, have prevented him from releasing his debut solo album.
The new album title is the aptly named "First & Last" and today we have been presented with the first single from the new album, we are also expecting an announcment that Butch described as an about "everything that’s been going on and the legal troubles that have barred me from releasing an album until now."
The single has arrived before the announcement and to avoid delay we have it here now for stream and download. "Fast Car" is, as promised, a remake - of the classic track by Tracy Chapman of the same name. The new version is produced by Qura who has worked alongside Rihanna, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce fame.

 It's exactly 2 years since we first heard from Oaklands own Renz Julian when he teamed up with DJ E-Rock to release the Legal Crack mixtape for free download on Dubcnn. Then last year we released his Pre-Album Mixtape Armageddon again for free download as well as promoting his single entitled Pop N' Lock featuring Twista and produced By Mr. Collipark.
Since that last update in September 2008 Renz Julian has been completing his album "Armageddon" and has just signed a distribution agreement to release the project on June 16th, 2009 via FOD Entertainment/City Hall Records.

It was October 2008 when we last heard from Butch Cassidy on the solo tip. In that month he featured in our West Coast Grind radio show to discuss his upcoming and long awaited LP "Self Sufficient" which was due in February 2009.
In the same month we also provided what was dubbed the first single for download. In 2 Deep (Givin It Up) featured Glasses Malone & Roc C and was produced by The Joint Chiefs, the production group consisting of Dae One, Ervin "EP" Pope, Damizza, Los, & "Jedi" Jared Moore.

 Ever since DJ Quik and Kurupt teamed up for the classic "Can't Go Wrong" from Kurupt's "Space Boogie" album, fans have been requesting a full-length project from the two legends. With the upcoming release of "Blaqkout", it's safe to say that this collabo project is not only one of this summer's most anticipated new albums, but of all of 2009.
Naturally, snippets and radio rips of different songs have been leaking the past few weeks, allowing fans to get their first taste of music from the album. "Whatcha Wanna Do" and "Hey Playa!" are two songs that made their rounds online and they received mixed reviews, part of the reason being the poor sound quality.  It's been a quiet start to 2009 so far for B.Y.I./Interscope artist Omar Cruz. Up to this point all the new material from BYI Entertainment has come from his labelmate Rome.
2008 saw the release of what was dubbed his albums first single featuring Frankie J. To The Top produced by Julian Bunneta was released back in May 2008 and followed up October with the music video. In between then all the new music we heard was the official release on Dubcnn of the acclaimed Omar Cruz - The Cruzifixion mixtape in Untagged format.
Today we are back with a brand new record from Omar Cruz aptly titled "Back At It." The track is produced by NOLA and can be listened to or downloaded below.

 Cashis' debut album on Shady Records has been pushed back numerous times, but the Orange County rapper is staying on his grind 24/7 and releasing new music and videos with the mixtapes all in between.

 Basik and Reese One better known as Bleu Collar have been appearing on Dubcnn since 2005 and have been putting out music on the underground circuit consistantly during that time. Often dubbed "the bridge between the Living Legends of the world and the Pacific Division's and Blu's of the new underground L.A. scene," Bleu Collar continue to run a fine line between the gritty underground and the mainstream circuit.
Those who know the scene will know that Bleu Collar were the duo behind the legendary 99cent Special (2006-07) at Little Temple in Silverlake, CA.
The event, which was highlighted on Dubcnn regulary, was known as the livest party without the pretentious Hollywood vibe. The legendary 99cent special shows created and environment where you could watch Bleu Collar and friends performing new songs fresh out the studio for experimentation in it's rawest form. Adding to their incredible live show status, Bleu Collar created Los Angeles Designer Music Live at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica, CA. where they gave one the most talked about live shows in the L.A. hip-hop scene to this day.
More recently Bleu Collar has focused on building the L.A. music scene often collaborating and rocking shows with friends and family including J Davey, Pacific Division, Diz Gibran, and Ben Kartwright.
That hasn't stopped the duo recording their creative and hard-hitting sound their known for Basik and Reese One are in accord regarding their goal; "Bleu Collar is solely interested in making extraordinary music"
Today we have a new track from the duo that will appear on their new "Training Day" project which is due for release on May 19th. "Training Day" is a five song EP that will be available for free download right here on Dubcnn. The project showcases the duo in their rawest form while doubling as a metaphor for the group’s re-entry into the game. Bleu Collar has taken some of the most unlikely instrumentals from renowned producers and totally transforming them into authentic Bleu Collar heat. The gloves are off and all boundaries have been broken.
Bleu Collar's sparing partners on the EP are Portishead, David Banner, Flying Lotus, MF Doom, and Deadly Avenger. The track we have today is called "Bleu Collar vs. Doom & Ghost" and can be heard below

 His hit song oozed out of car stereos and violated club speakers everywhere, so much so that the hook is forever imprinted into our brains. Yes, there are obvious great benefits to having such a super successful song, but on the other hand, the pressure to supersede that mega-hit status would seem overwhelming at times – not to mention hearing the phrase “This is why I’m hot” reiterated over and over again by everyone you come in contact with for years to come would start to get annoying pretty fast.
Now MIMS is back to challenge the success of that dance-inducing phenomenon with another soon-to-be chart-topping single called “Move If You Wanna” from his self-proclaimed diverse album Guilt, hitting stores on April 7th.
Dubcnn sits down with MIMS to talk about music, greed, Ryan Seacrest, how to be hot in a hooptie, and the turntables that turned the tables in this Dubcnn Exclusive – and this is why we’re hot (you know we couldn’t resist that one).

Here is the official press release for the highly anticipated collabo album "Blaqkout" by DJ Quik and Kurupt:
Multi-platinum producer & recording artist DJ Quik, and Dogg Pound affiliate & gangster rapper extraordinaire Kurupt are two of the best-known West Coast representatives in Rap & Hip Hop, period. The pair have teamed up to create a cutting-edge sound on Blaqkout, a full-length collaboration album conceptualized during Snoop Dogg’s Ego Trippin’ recording sessions and masterminded by DJ Quik.
“Kurupt does in rap what I do in music,” DJ Quik says. “It just made sense. Kurupt is a gangster rapper in the sense of being raw, bare-bones and uncut. I wanted to do music that evoked certain feelings and could show his microphone superiority.”
A prime example of the duo’s explosive chemistry is “9 Times Out Of 10.” Over a heavy drum assemblage, Kurupt freaks an intricate rhyme pattern about the likelihood of things happening over and over again. “Blaqkout,” is a masterful musical moment where Kurupt’s brutal lyricism matches Quik’s energetic creation. The “Blaqkout” cut is the epitome of Southern Cali rider music that brings a Sunday on Crenshaw Blvd. vibe to mind.
But the track “Hey Playa” (Moroccan Blues) is the gem in Quik’s production crown – he found the sample & inspiration for this track while watching the Morocco episode of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on TV. It’s this type of sonic bliss that made the partnership between DJ Quik -- a platinum solo artist and producer of Jay-Z, 2Pac, AMG and others -- and Kurupt -- the standout lyricist of Death Row Records, a double platinum member of Tha Dogg Pound and a ferocious freestyle MC -- so significant.
“Blaqkout” will be in stores June 9, 2009.

As we previously reported, Warren G is gearing up to release his new album "The G-Files" soon. While the first single "Crush" featuring Ray J started getting played almost a year ago, the follow-up single was picked and just sent in to blast out the Dubcnn readers. This one is called "Mr. DJ" and it sets the tone for the upcoming album.
As Warren G said in our exclusive interview a few weeks ago: "It's an incredible project, it's music you can dance to, sing to, smoke to and just enjoy yourself. It's not an album with just a bunch of sad songs, it's a party album."
