1085787325 - January 1, 1970 By : When people think of West Coast Rap, they think of Gangsterism, violence, gang banging. That is, what most WC Rappers have stood for in the past decade. But, of course, during the whole time, there has been a Hip Hop movement on the West, with a totally different approach of things, but often got overlooked, labeled as back pack rappers, and not given a chance in the mainstream.
The rapper I'm going to present to you goes further than aiming guns at peoples chest, banging a set and representing his coast. He's a true MC. Mykestro is the younger brother of beat-making legend Battlecat. He's coming out of South Central, CA, and is eager to show the world what he's capable of.
We had the chance to catch up with both Mykestro and Battlecat to talk about the man's debut solo album "Just Due" on which he's currently putting the finishing touches on. When asked about his younger brother, Battlecat started boasting "He's my best kept secret man, matter of fact he's the best kept secret in Cali! He truly has a voice of music, he's a real musician!". He pointed out that Hip Hop has been in a drought for a good while now: "We ain't had nobody fresh in the last years! We need something like this. He has his head on straight, he's not only a musician, but also a business man. He's my official business partner on my new label that I'm putting together, he's my new accountant. He's business minded and a musical craft. That's something we need over here!"
Mykestro has been busy this past year just doing show after show, staying busy getting his name out there, getting some play on the radio, and he released his own mixtape "Drops and promo cuts Vol. 1", and appeared on the "West Coast Allstars Mixtape" aswell. When asked how he would describe himself as a artist, he said "I would say I'm absolutely universal. I have alot of versitality, and definitely not what you would expect out of L.A. I come from a musical background, MC and production wise. I'm very consistent as far as lyrics go, I'm a MC!"
Now it would seem obvious that since he's Battlecats little brother, they would really use that to market him as an artist, but that's not the plan! "We work together, we've been together since gits, but he's not trying to use that as an obvious envelope to push it. He's been really putting in work in the studio working, doing shows, he wants to do him, not ride on somebody elses coattail. He wanna prove the world what he can bring behind the mic", Battlecat said.
When asked about his influences growing up Mykesto shouts without hesitation that "Kurupt was my hero! That's my hero right there! That's who I looked up to when coming up, I always felt like he was a different type of MC, so that was my main influence from the gate. But now I listen to alot of different shit, I like Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharaoh Monch, Ice Cube.. I like real MC's, I like Slum Village, Jigga of course, Eminem is a monster, Busta Rhymes, of course Biggie & Pac.. Yeah those are the main ones"
"To me man, Mykestro is like Jay-Z and Common Sense in one... yeah he's like the mix of the two!", Battlecat added about his brother.
Now let's get into his debut solo album "Just Due" which he's dropping. He's shooting for a 4th Quarter release if everything goes well. As for the label situation, "If the paperwork is right, I would go with a major! But if it's tons of faulty paperwork, I'm definitely gonna keep it independent". He's been recording for the album since the beginning of the year, and in contrary to most of the shit coming out nowadays, this is actually gonna look like a Solo album! He has a few features by the likes of Crooked I, Conyac, and his kinfolk Track Life, Bishop Lamont and Glasses Malone.
The production credits are very impressive too. Of course, he has Battlecat on there. "Man the shit Cat gave me, is not something you usually hear from cat. I didn't want the claps and all that. He came with something different this time around, except on one, where he came with all his funk and flavor, because I can't forget where I'm from and where I grew up!. Other producers are Raphael Saadiq, Michael Angelo, Terrace Martin, Josef Leimberg, D-Dash & Sa Ra.
We're gonna be providing you with material from his mixtape, aswell as album previews in near future, stay tuned for more news in Mykestro, because this cat is on the come up and will hopefully be a force on the West in near future!
Mykestro dropped a shoutout for all the DubCnn vistors, check it below:

It has been reported that Bishop is now signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, however that is not completely true. They are in talks, it is looking very good, but nothing has been inked as of yet, so it's not official yet.
I spoke to Bishop about the on-going "West Coast Movement" and all of his homies that's involved. Warren G has been heating up the airwaves lately. After dropping the street single "Guerilla Pimpin'" with Aftermaths newest signee Bishop Lamont, the G-Child now hooked up with B-Real of Cypress Hill for his newest radio song "Get You Down", which just hit the radio stations.
Warren is getting ready to drop his newest solo album "In The Mid-Nite Hour" in September, and is set to drop a mixtape before the album, called "This Is For My DJ's", sometime this summer. Hopefully the dates stick and we don't see the record getting pushed back.
For now check out "Get You Down" below, and lookout for more audio soon:

As we have been reporting over the past 8 weeks, Warren G is scheduled to release his fifth studio CD, "In The Mid-Nite Hour," on October 11, 2005. The album, his first solo release in five years, has the single "Get U Down," featuring B Real and Watts-based soul singers Side Effect which is currently blazing radio including Power 106 and The Beat. According to Warren G the album is a portrayal of Warren G’s musical take of what happens as the clock ticks past the big one-two: "A lot of things go on in the midnight hour, but I stayed up in the midnight hour making this record. I touch on everything and it's bundled in one big ball of funk."
With a 2005 edge to his trademark smoothed-out sound, the G child stays on the same course that led him to gold and platinum CD success, those classic hits "Regulate," "This DJ" and "I Want It All."
Along with Warren on "In The Mid-Nite Hour," are other guest collaborators including Raphael Saadiq, young rising star, Aftermath’s Bishop Lamont, G Funk Productions’ Frank Lee White (the latter two intro-ed to Warren by half-brother Dr. Dre), G Funk Productions’ Chuck Taylor, and Chevy Jones. Chop and screw rap expert Mike Jones gets down with Warren and watches his back on "In Case Some Sh$# Go Down, the album’s second single.
The aforementioned single, "Get U Down," tackles a myriad of issues, from black-onbrown violence in Los Angeles to our military entanglements in the Middle East, and a special version, "Get U Down Part 2" featuring a special dedication to Hurricane Katrina
victims as well as guest spots by Snoop Dogg and Ice Cube, reminding people to stay strong and positive. Details are currently being worked out so that proceeds from various downloads of "Part 2" will go to the Red Cross to help Katrina aid relief efforts: "A lot of people aren’t really touching on what’s going on and they gotta wake up, even though we go through hard times you still have to smile, know that God is gonna work it out. That’s for the victims of Katrina and everybody around the world that’s going through stressful times."
Kevin Hunter will direct the "Get U Down Part 2" video which will be shot next week in different Cali locales with Warren G, B Real, Snoop and Cube. Paul Hunter will then shoot, "In Case Some Sh$# Go Down" shortly after that.

Bishop Lamont has arrived! Aftermath's newest signee is currently in the studio with Dr. Dre, as the whole camp is working on Dre's highly anticipated album "Detox", which will probably see the light of day sometime in 2006.
Until Bishop gets to shine on the 'Math, he'll be staying on his street grind which got him where he is now, and keep dropping heat on mixtapes and soundtracks. You might have heard the song I got for ya'll right now, but if you haven't, this is a must check. It's from "E-A Sports Soundtrack Vol. 1" and was produced by Da Riffs, so you know it's gonna be dope. It sounds like Tony Yayo is doing ad-libs on the chorus, no confirmation on that though...
A hard ass track, check it out below:

He's Young and his fans are getting Restless. The Bay Area Mixtape King, Balance, is finally ready to drop his long awaited solo debut, Young & Restless, on his Ayindemusic label through SMC/Fontana/Universal Distribution. With Production from E-A-Ski & CMT, Damien Taylor, Left of The Frontline, Shonuff, Aristotle, and Erk Tha Jerk. And features from E-A-Ski, The Frontline, Chamillionire and Keak Da Sneak. What more can one ask from this New Bay representer? As he is still finishing up the last few songs on the album to be turned so he can meet his release date of March 7th, 2006.
When asked if he was going to be keeping the album more Bay oriented, Balance responded:
"Mainly, but the music sounds nation wide. I'm tryin to compete with the Juelz Santana’s, Saigon’s, Bishop Lamont’s, Glasses Malone’s."
Balance also told Dubcnn about some new songs he's been working on:
"I just did a song with Scipio called "New West," supposed to have all the New West cats. E-A-Ski’s album. Not too much. I don't wear myself out, feel me? I think that’s the number one problem Hip Hop faces."
It doesn't stop there, Balance is going to be writing a movie slated for release sometime in 2007. We asked where Balance would be in 5 years, he states:
"Screenwriting for my 1st movie called “Twelve.” [It’s] about a bank robbery going wrong...I don't wanna give the plot away, but it’s crazy. More than just a bank robbery."
Now onto the audio, Balance hit us off with a clean version of his new track, "Gotta Get It" produced by Oakland vet, E-A-Ski. Check it out below:
Balance - Gotta Get It (Prod. E-A-Ski).

You getting fed up? Fed up of what? New music and new talent straight out of the I.E.? Didn't think so; we're back to drop some audio from an artist and producer who has been working hard over a long period of time and as ever dubcnn unveils that talent to the world. Bigg North is no newcomer to the Hip-Hop scene, he has produced tracks for a number of established Hip-Hop and R&B acts and as well ask being able to lace tracks behind the boards he also takes time in the booth and with the pen. Bigg North has already worked with a plethora of artists and is gearing up to release his debut album, "Tha Nu Left Coast."
"The title really explains what my album is gonna sound like. I'm not gangsta, but i can get gangsta if you really wanna trip. And I'm not quite a backpacker. My sound is kind of a blend of the two. When you hear The Game or Sly Boogy, Bishop Lamont or myself, we are the new sound of the West Coast. It's gonna sound a little different. The flow, the tracks we rhyme on and everything. We are the new left coast." North explains.
He has already recorded enough material to release the album however he is working to make it the best it can be and so is still in the studio adding to the potential cuts. Artists already set to appear on "Tha Nu Left Coast" include Young Bleed, Sly Boogy, Kokane, Coniyak of Doggy's Angels, the multi-platinum selling R&B group NEXT, Lifestyle and Bishop Lamont amongst others. North has already stated "I want every song to sound like it's a single," and thus far North is doing just that. The street single which we have for exclusive download is the albums title track, "Tha Nu Left Coast" and features Sly Boogy and the group Lifestyle. It is another example of what the new westcoast has to offer and finds all the artists shining individually creating a great collective piece of music.
The album will allow Bigg North to display his versatility, both behind the boards and in the booth. There is a smoothness that the ladies will appreciate with the sincere "Natural High" which features Hip-Hop veteran Kokane, while the club slap, "Pop That Thang" will not dissapoint the crowds. You can find a spanish guitar influenced track when you hear the cut "Badd Chick" which finds Sly Boogy and NEXT on top form. Other notable tracks from the yet to be finalised release include an ode to children and parents who are taking care of their responsibilities titled "Tha Parenthood" and the rough street anthem "Mastermind.". Bigg North is setting out his stall early within the Hip-Hop community aiming to be around for the long haul.
Take some time to visit his My Space Page to learn more about Bigg North however expect dubcnn to cover lots more news on North and his work. Check out the new track below and drop over to the forum to leave feedback.
