news Jay Rock Signs To Tech N9ne's Strange Music! - By : Nima - September 28, 2010

Official press release: Independent rap powerhouse Tech N9ne and his Strange Music cohorts have been scouring the country in search of tomorrow’s next big rap star… and they just found what they’ve been looking for. The Kansas City-based label just teamed up with Top Dawg Entertainment and Watts, California’s biggest hero Jay Rock for a multi-record deal.

The opportunity to be a part of bringing the next wave of West Coast Hip Hop to the forefront is exciting to me,” says Strange Music CEO, Travis O’Guin. “I immersed myself in that music growing up and it is definitely a part of who I am. I feel like Jay Rock is one of the artists really reviving that West Coast scene and I’m ecstatic that he, along with Top Dawg Entertainment are a part of the Strange Music family.

Top Dawg Entertainment’s CEO, Dude Dawg, had this to say about the deal, “As a label, Strange has more to offer than most majors out there. Together, Strange and TDE joining forces will mean the best of both worlds for Jay Rock and other artists to come. With their top-to-bottom label machine and our street expertise, there’s no stopping us.

Jay Rock and TDE recently flew out to Strange’s Kansas City headquarters to seal the deal and XXL Magazine was on hand to capture all of the events of this historical day (link below). The highly respected Hip Hop magazine has been following Jay Rock’s career closely. The “new breed of hustler” was featured on XXL’s April 2010 cover showcasing its list of the Freshman Class of 2010. Other media outlets have also taken note of Jay Rock's undeniable talent: MTV named Jay Rock one of its Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010.

Jay Rock says of his new venture, “Man, I'm excited about this. Tech and Strange approached us once I became a free agent and we went to KC to see first-hand what we had been missing and saw why they're the #1 independent rap label. The word had spread about me leaving Warner Bros. and I was getting offers left & right from majors wanting to sign me, but in the end, Dude Dawg and I had no doubts that Strange had the perfect situation for us."

And JAY ROCK is no stranger to Strange Music. On Sept. 15, he hit the road on “TECH N9NE’s Independent Grind Tour 2010” featuring some of the biggest names in independent Hip Hop, including E-40, Cash Money’s Glasses Malone and Strange Music cohorts Krizz Kaliko, Kutt Calhoun and Big Scoob. The tour will last six weeks and consists of 44 shows in 46 days.

Jay Rock also appeared on Tech N9ne’s latest collabos album, The Gates Mixed Plate, and will cameo, along with the rest of the tour players, on Tech N9ne’s upcoming mixtape with DJ Whoo Kid that hits streets later this fall.

For the past five years, Jay Rock and Top Dawg Entertainment have been holding Cali Hip Hop down. With his fellow label mates Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q, the foursome represent the Black Hippy Movement, and have been hailed as a modern-day version of N.W.A. meets the Pharcyde.

Jay Rock’s Strange Music full-length debut, Follow Me Home will feature appearances and production by a who’s who of hip-hop’s elite and is due sometime next Spring. "I was hyped when I got the news that Jay Rock and TDE decided to go with Strange instead of any of the other many labels that were tugging at them.” Says Tech N9ne. “I knew that Jay Rock, being the hardcore artist that he is would add another wonderful dimension to our Strange roster. Strange and TDE all day, baby!"

Watch XXL’s footage of Jay Rock signing his deal with Strange Music by clicking here.

Congratulations to Jay Rock!

news DJ Quik - G-Shit Feat. KK (Audio) - By : LilJay - September 27, 2010

Gangsta rap is in full effect right now! Dubcnn just got a hold of a new song by DJ Quik featuring his old comrad KK of 2nd II None. From the looks of it, this will be featured on his upcoming album "The Book of David", due out in October or November, as he says on the track.

The time frame of the album release isn't the only thing he's talking about on here. Quik is going in Compton style as he's back in his its-time-to-clear-some-issues mood and he's speaking his mind on a few personal things over 8 minutes long. From what we've heard so far, "The Book of David" is shaping up to be another piece of magic from the Quikster.

We have just received the official first single off Strong Arm Steady's long awaited official Blacksmith Records album "Arms & Hammers", which is finally set to drop on February 1st via Blacksmith/Element 9/Fontana.

I can't remember exactly how long its been since the "Arms & Hammers" album was first announced, but its been a few years. I can't front though, the Steady Gang has managed to feed their fan base so much (mostly free) music in the meantime, that the wait did not seem that long. But it is time!

news Dubcnn Checks In With Miami's Poe Boy Music Group - By : Mil - September 23, 2010

Today we take a brief detour from our regularly scheduled west coast programing to tune in to Miami's Poe Boy Music Group.

With a roster that boasts talent such as Flo Rida (Poe Boy/Atlantic Records), Brisco (Poe Boy/Cash Money/Universal), Billy Blue (Poe Boy/Konvict/Mosely Music/Interscope Records), Mista Mac and JRandall, and also having played a major part in the success of Rick Ross, Poe Boy Music Group is one of the hottest places to be right now.

First up we have Flo Rida's urban single "Why You Up In Here" which features the ever impressive Ludacris, Gucci Mane & Get Fresh. It is from the upcoming album The Only One which is set to be released later this year.

Flo Rida - Why You Up In Here (Featuring Ludacris, Gucci Mane & Get Fresh)

Also repping Poe Boy we have, Mista Mac. With no release date for his still untitled debut album he is definitely one to look out for in the future. With his impressive talent and the backing, he will be sure to make a name for himself in the next few years.

We have a new song from Mista Mac titled "Flexin" available for streaming and/or download below!

Mista Mac - Flexin

Most of you will already be familiar with Brisco following the success of his single "On The Wall" which featured Lil Wayne.

He's back with a new single from his album Street Medicine, this time he as accompanied on the song by the man of the moment Rick Ross. Be sure to check it out!

Brisco - Lonely Road (Featuring Rick Ross)

Last but by no means last we have a new record from Billy Blue called "Riders and Sliders" (my personal pick of the bunch!). Signed to Interscope through a joint venture with Poe Boy Music Group, Akon's Konvict Music & Timbaland's Mosely Music Group, Billy Blue may just turn out to be hiphops next big star.

Find out why he has such major heavyweights backing him on "Riders and Sliders" and stay tuned for more news on his album Story Of My Life which is due in store 2011!

news Kendrick Lamar - Overly Dedicated (Free Download) - By : LilJay - September 23, 2010

Kendrick Lamar's "Overly Dedicated" has been the talk of (West Coast) Rap since its release on iTunes last week. The Compton native kept his promise and leaked the entire thing for free download just an hour ago.

If you belong to the minority and you've yet to hear "OD" because you've been waiting on your free shot, your time has finally come! Everybody else who supported the project, make sure you still download the new version and look for the 3 new tracks which didn't make the iTunes version.

Kendrick Lamar - Overly Dedicated (Free Mixtape Download)

Even though we appreciate Kendrick dropping this for free as well, we want everybody to realize how big of a success the iTunes release was on September 14th. The project was released with no retail marketing, only the push on the blogs and it entered the iTunes Hip-Hop charts at #7, amidst the Drake's, B.o.B.'s and Eminem's with major backing. So even if you haven't copped the digital download yet and want to get the extra tracks from the free version, we urge you to support Kendrick Lamar and independent West Coast music by copping it on iTunes anyway.

Let's open the doors for more West Coast artists to successfully release full-length projects, it's been too long!

news Damizza - Guilty By Association In Stores October 10th - By : Mil - September 17, 2010

“There is only one woman I have ever been in love with. And my love for her is exactly the reason I had to leave.”

For the first time ever, noted FM radio programmer and West Coast hip-hop/rock producer Damion Young publicly admits his private love affair with music legend Mariah Carey. Mariah anointed her producer, live-in-boyfriend, might-as-well-have-been-manager "Damizza" to eliminate possible conflict of interest accusations for the highly successful program director of LA's Power 106 and NY's Hot '97. Mariah’s trust was unwavering. She deferred to him in almost all things. Damion “Damizza” Young's love for Mariah was so strong he ended their relationship for the sake of her career, knowing that his objective eye was essential to foster her climb. GBA unveils the truth behind one of the music industry's most passionate love affairs. It's never been Damion's intention to exploit his relationship with Mariah; he just hopes to set the record straight.

The mastermind behind the acclaimed “Chronic 2001” reunion of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, his work has sold in excess of 30 million copies and spent a collective 600 weeks on the Billboard charts. Damizza, best known as a behind-the-scenes magician within the music and radio industries has been associated with Mariah, Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Hootie & the Blowfish, Terry Reid, Eric Burdon, and many others. Yet what landed him on the front page of The National Enquirer was the announcement in 2008 that he'd begun working on his life story with author J. Marshall Craig (who wrote acclaimed memoirs for Eric Burdon, Chuck Leavell and others) — and the subsequent cease-and-desist-order Mariah’s attorneys served him with.

“It’s the truth,” Damizza says. “When it comes to the music industry I know how deep the rabbit hole goes ... and I’m taking fans along for the ride. But there’s a lot more to my story than introducing Mariah to Eminem ... it’s the truth of why Dr. Dre’s “Detox” has been in limbo for more than a decade ... it’s how Jay-Z became huge enough to run Def Jam Records ... it’s how I salvaged Janet Jackson’s relationship with radio programmers all over the world. I’m letting loose on how records are made, promoted, leaked, paid off, corrupted, and careers and lives made and destroyed at the whims of ego and corporate corruption. I was there.”

Guilty By Association (Two Harbors Press, ISBN: 978-1-936198-98-6; 10/10/10; $16.95) will be available through www.damizzaguilty.com, bookstores everywhere, and all major online retailers beginning October 10th, 2010.

news Exclusive Video Interview With Ice Cube! - By : Nima - September 10, 2010

Since Ice Cube is dropping his new album "I Am The West" on September 28th, it's only right that he connected with the West Coast News Network, dubcnn, for an exclusive interview to discuss the project. We met with Cube on the set of his video shoot to "Too West Coast" with WC and Young Maylay and he tells us about the making of the album, differences to his last one "Raw Footage" and his expectations.

We also speak about the artist-fan relationship, which has completely changed with the digital age where artists are in direct contact with their audience.

Cube tells us about the planned Dr. Dre tracks that didn't make the album, the E-A Ski and DJ Quik collaborations and why sometimes things do not go as originally planned when recording an album.

He also tells us why he never tried to stop his sons Doughboy and OMG (who are also featured on two songs on the album) from rapping, and what made him want to feature Young Maylay on the album.

Check out all that and much more in our exclusive video interview with Ice Cube:

news Likeblood Releases New Single "Me Likey" (Audio) - By : Chad - September 10, 2010

In an industry dominated by solo artists, D.C-bred Hip-hop group, Likeblood (aka Eric “Yung E” Mann; Andre “Dre Strong” Strong; Mbea “Mbea Da 1” Bassil), takes the new age mantra, “more for your money,” and makes it a reality. With a trifecta of voices that are unique in both perspective and sound, Likeblood emerges onto the scene to remind music lovers and Hip-hop heads alike, just how special a cohesive group of emcees can be.

Being from Washington, D.C. automatically raises the stakes for any emcee. The original “Murder Capital” is one of America's top urban markets, the nation's #1 most watched political center, and is the birthplace of Go-Go, a musical sub-culture which has influenced Hip-Hop since its inception. Even with all of this in hand, the true voice of D.C. Hip-Hop has yet to be defined, and for Likeblood, establishing that voice has always been paramount.

After their two wildly successful singles “Money Over Here” and “Back to the Money”, both featuring R&B superstar crooner Bobby Valentino aka Bobby V – DC’s very own buzz-worthy Hip-Hop group, Likeblood returns to the scene with “Me Likey”.

Check the track out below and watch out for more from Likeblood!

news Introducing "Veteran Assassins" - Single, Album & Tour - By : Rud - September 8, 2010

One thing that stays constant and exciting about being part of Dubcnn is breaking new talent to our readership.

Now to some the names ethemadassassin and Veteran Eye may be familiar as solo artists but few will have heard them under their collaborative name VeteranAssassins. This combination seeks to restore fans’ faith in music by proving that in only six days, two emcees can resurrect the foundation of Hip-Hop legend.

ethemadassassin and Veteran Eye were known individually in the Greensboro, NC music scene before forging their working relationship after being formally introduced at a recording session for another artist. They quickly realised that their personal views and musical tastes aligned and despite Veteran Eye moving out to LA shortly after the duo set about planning to release an album undert the Veteran Assassins name.

The project, which is released in conjunction with French production team The FakeHunters who have produced the entire LP, was recorded to ensure that their trademark aversion to the ‘half-assed’ was upheld. The Veteran Assassins realised recording the album a coast apart via email was not going to deliver the outcome they wanted so ethemadassassin bought a plane ticket to LA, and issued the challenge – write and record the entire “VeteranAssassins” album in the six days before he had to fly back to NC. - daunting? Not at all! The album was completed by 4am on the final evening; "Nothing worth enjoying should come easy...or something like that [laughs] ...the reward is that we have a dope and original project. Good things come out of hard work," explains the duo.

The first single from the album, which is available on iTunes now, is the track "All Boro" which is inspired by the grind of both artists’ home base in Greensboro, NC, and not only reps the Veteran Assassins’ status in their own borough, but highlights how the reputations they’ve earned there (from the street to the stage) have spread to boroughs world-wide.

Veteran Assassins - All Boro

The Veteran Assassins album sees the duo showcase their individual abilities and their collective mindstates over The FakeHunters eclectic musical mix that bring what can only be described as a "renewed" perspective to a very "throwback" sound.

Once again the album Veteran Assassins is out now and the duo are touring right now, check out the full tour guide on their official website but tonight they play Little Temple in LA, The Vibe in Riverside, CA on Sunday and Space 120 in Palm Springs, CA on Wednesday before hitting Las Vegas, Santa Maria, CA and Seattle over the coming weeks.

news Snoop Dogg Announces New Solo LP - Doggystyle 2? - By : Rud - September 3, 2010

August was a busy month for Snoop Dogg and September and the lead up to Christmas look to be no different. Earlier this week we brought you exclusive footage of his Rock The Bells 2010 appearance in San Francisco where he performed Ain't No Fun live alongside Daz, Kurupt, Warren G, RBX, Soopafly and The Lady Of Rage.

On Monday we brought you footage of Game & Snoop Dogg In The Studio and today we have a video that sees Snoop, in the studio with Swizz Beatz yesterday, announcing plans to release a new album under the name "Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary."

Now outlets across the web have picked up on the viral video - which can be watched below - but few have recognised that Snoop has laid claim to be working on a "Doggystyle 2" on previous occasions which have always - so far at least - transcended into an album of a different name.

Only time will tell how it gets released, but the news that the album that is currently being worked on under the title of "Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary" is set to solely be produced by Swizz Beatz and not Dr. Dre has already raised eyebrows. Like Snoop and Swizz alude to in the video, sometimes it's about the sound of an album - and if it sounds right; it sounds right.

news The HoodStarz Prep Star-Studded "Controversy" Album - By : Nima - September 2, 2010

The trials and tribulations of growing up in tough neighborhoods have been expressed time and time again by artists through dark stories in their music, while some artists escape the seriousness of their daily lives through abstract, poetic or even comedic lyrics.

Through a series of personal and business interactions, Bay Area natives Band-Aide and Scoot Dogg came together for their 2005 debut as The HoodStarz with the ability to mesh street credible songwriting with witty, fun-laden lyrics.

Now in 2010, The HoodStarz (also known as Dem HoodStarz) are more focused than ever, with their current David Banner-produced single "Laughin" gaining momentum with fans. Banner recently added some lyrics to the track, and an official video is slated for release in September. As the duo nears the October 5th release date for their "Controversy" album on Lawless Records, they are putting the finishing touches on four more videos as well.

The Controversy project pulls together experiences that Band-Aide and Scoot have been through since their popular 2007 Bay Area All-Starz mixtape dropped... and a lot can happen in just three years!

"What we've been through, good and bad, has forced us to mature substantially," explains Scoot. "We know that we have grown a great deal, and fans will hear this in the subject matter and lyrics throughout this album."

In addition to critically acclaimed producer/rapper David Banner, guest appearances on Controversy include Gucci Mane, Red Cafe, E-40, Glasses Malone, Messy Marv, Selau and Big Rich.

"This is no regular street album," Band-Aide asserts. "We really went into this project like a full-scale studio album - real songs, real features, real music. Controversy is something fans will be listening to years from now as a part of their favorite collection."

You can watch a trailer to the "Controversy" by clicking here.

Tracklist:

01. They Ain't Know
02. Always Yappin' ft. Messy Marv
03. I'm Cool
04. Focus On The Money
05. Hold Me Down ft. Selau
06. Laughin' ft. David Banner

news Krizz Kaliko Readies "Shock Treatment" Album - By : Nima - September 2, 2010

Official press release: As Tech N9ne’s right-hand man and the mastermind behind many of Strange Music’s biggest hits, Krizz Kaliko has proven he strikes a nerve with fans worldwide.

And on Sept. 14, 2010, one of the most talented, under the radar rap artists in the game follows up his sophomore CD "Genius", with "Shock Treatment", featuring Strange CEO/founder Tech N9ne, label mates Kutt Calhoun, Big Scoob and Brotha Lynch Hung, plus Big Ben, Stevie Stone and more Hip Hop hot shots.

Krizz Kaliko steps it up a notch with his first single, “Elevator,” a club ditty that inspires both naughty and nice moves on the dance floor. The always-amped emcee accelerates the lady love with a string of female-fueled tracks, including the humorous “Skally Wag,” slow-moving, seductive “Stripper Dance” and upbeat R&B-blessed “Get It Girl” with Irv Da Phenom.

Where Krizz Kaliko really distinguishes himself from the rap pack is with his buzzing blends of rock and hip-hop. Crashing cymbals and raging guitars power “Hard Core,” while the frenetic pace of “Get Active” is right in line with the exciting energy that pulsates through the crowd at Strange Music concerts.

Simon Says,” featuring Tech N9ne, is a Strange Music call-and-response classic ready-made to stir followers into a frenzy. “All Gas No Brakes” is a stuttering, haunting head nodder featuring 816 Boyz, and “In My Dreams” pairs Krizz Kaliko with Brotha Lynch Hung for a symphonic, cinematic adventure that boasts the lyrical prowess of both eccentric mic masters.

After working with Tech N9ne and Strange Music for 10 years, performing over 200 shows a year, Krizz Kaliko has earned a spot among Hip Hop’s hardest-working entertainers. His solo debut, 2008’s "Vitiligo", landed at No. 19 on the Billboard charts and he has been instrumental in Tech N9ne’s incredible success: In 2008, Tech N9ne SoundScanned over one million units, making him the most successful independent Hip Hop artist in history. Krizz Kaliko's sophomore CD, "Genius", ranked No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart.

It’s Kali baby, and he’s coming to a city near you with “TECH N9NE’S INDEPENDENT GRIND TOUR 2010” along with Hip Hop heavyweights E-40, Jay Rock and Glasses Malone and Strange Music cohorts Kutt Calhoun and Big Scoob.

An exclusive song was recently leaked online called "Game On", which doesn't seem to have made the album though. Either way, check it out below:
