Lyrical Swords V.2: Westside Rebellion - June 24, 2005 By : Nima
YinSumi Press, the world’s first publishing house dedicated to documenting the social and political trends in the Hip Hop sub culture, is proud to announce that author Adisa Banjoko, DJ Mike Relm and Balance will release a powerful CD to accompany the release of “Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion”. The book and CD will drop Oct., 1st 2005 on YinSumi Press. To download a sample MP3 of Adisa Banjoko’s Harvard lecture on “Islam, Hip Hop and Black America” featuring Balance w/ various beats and blends by DJ Relm: LISTEN HERE!! “Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion” looks at the difference in philosophy and strategy between Hip Hop on the east coast and west coast. “People forget that the west coast is the home of the Black Panthers and the Brown Beret’s. When the courts fail to serve justice to the people out west, we riot. That’s why Tupac said ‘Only in Cali do we riot not rally, so live and die’. From Ice Cube to Tupac, Paris and Kam, we have a ton of strong conscious rappers. But the standard myth is that the only conscious rappers come from the east. No doubt our east coast brothers set the standard. But like everything else in Hip Hop, we have our own unique way of being politically active.”
Additional tracks from Balance and San Jose’s Jay the Butcher and Shamako Noble be featured on the CD for “Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion”.
“In truth, the CD is a tribute to Keith LeBlanc’s “No Sell Out” from back in 1983. It’s a tribute to Malcolm X and LeBlanc. When we tell you that you have not heard anything like this before, we mean it. The artistry by which Relm rocked the blends of my lecture with Hip Hop is beyond amazing. To be on the same team as Balance on a mixtape is just an honor in itself. When it comes to ‘Lyrical Swords Volume 2: Westside Rebellion’, people can either be down now, or bow down later. But the rebellion is on!!” said Banjoko.
In addition the book “Lyrical Swords Vol. 2: Westside Rebellion” will feature previously unreleased interviews from the late 80’s and early 90’s with artists such as Master P, Mac Mall, Run D.M.C. and Jam Master Jay, Luniz, Paris, Young Black Teenagers, Slick Rick, Tragedy Khadafi, Spice One, Gangstarr, and many others. Other dynamic social and political commentary on issues facing today’s youth will also be included. A sample MP3 of DJ Mike Relm’s mix can be heard right now at www.netweed.com/lyricalswords!!Discuss This Topic

Sinful, E-40, Sly Boogy, Techniec (MP3 Audio) - June 23, 2005 By : SGV

Attention A & R's and Labels out there reading this: Sinful "El Pecador" of the infamous Long Beach duo Tha Mexakinz is now a Free agent. The Pioneer of Bilingual rap is ready to make his mark again. Holla at elpecador@elpecador.com and/or danny@elpecador.com if you're interested.
Now to the music. Sin has been busy in the studio with I-Man working on a new Mexakinz album, we'll be dropping an interview we did with the group not too long ago, very soon. But, in between that time, El Pecador has been able to craft some tracks with many of the West Coast's hottest names.
First up I have for you a Remix for a song that appeared on his Spanish language album "Confesiones De Un Pecador" that was released last year, entilted "Pieza Diez." For the Remix, Sinful got one of the West Coast's biggest and brightest prospects, Sly Boogy and fellow LBC Resident, Dynamic Certified/M.O.B.'s own Techniec to drop their rhymes. The song is called "Dime Piece," which just so happens to be the English translation of "pieza diez." Though this is a Remix which features rhymes in English, Sin drops his verse all in Spanish.
Enough explaining, here's the full MP3:
Sinful feat. Sly Boogy & Techniec - Dime Piece
Super Producer Bosko dropped his Compilation That Fire, which featured everyone from DMX, E-40, C-Bo, Kueupt, Bubba Sparxxx to Lil' Jon, a little earlier this year. The title track featured E-40, C-Bo and Cool Nutz. With an already Latin feel to the track, Sinful hopped on and Remixed the joint. E-40's verse is the same, Sin drops his Spanish language rhymes as usual over the Spanish guitar strings laid by Bosko. The track also features Vallejo's Baby Bash.
Check it out for yourself:
Sinful feat. Bosko, E-40 & Baby Bash - That Fire Remix
It doesn't stop there. In the coming days we will be bringing you another Remix from Sin. Continue to log on to the website where you get all the hot news, video and audio first! DubCNN.com!

DJ Warrior & cast of "Rize" on Jay Leno Tonight - June 21, 2005 By : JustinL

LOS ANGELES- June 21, 2005 11:35pm DJ Warrior performing live on stage tonight on 'The Tonight Show' with Jay Leno and the cast of Rize (Krumpers and Clowners), a film by David Lachapelle. Please check your local listing times for the Tonight Show with Jay Leno (11:35pm PST)
Coming to select theaters June 24th - "Rize" reveals a groundbreaking dance phenomenon that's exploding on the streets of South Central, Los Angeles. Taking advantage of unprecedented access, this documentary film brings to first light a revolutionary form of artistic expression borne from oppression. The aggressive and visually stunning dance modernizes moves indigenous to African tribal rituals and features mind-blowing, athletic movement sped up to impossible speeds. "Rize" tracks the fascinating evolution of the dance: we meet Tommy Johnson (Tommy the Clown), who first created the style as a response to the 1992 Rodney King riots and named it "Clowning", as well as the kids who developed the movement into what they now call Krumping. The kids use dance as an alternative to gangs and hustling: they form their own troupes and paint their faces like warriors, meeting to outperform rival gangs of dancers or just to hone their skills. For the dancers, Krumping becomes a way of life - and because it's authentic expression (in complete oppositionto the bling-bling hip-hop culture), the dance becomes a vital part of who they are.
Like "Paris is Burning" or "Style Wars" before it, "Rize" illuminates an entire community by focusing on an artform as a movement that the disenfranchised have created. But the true stars of the film are the dancers themselves: surrounded by drug addiction, gang activity, and impoverishment, they have managed to somehow rise above. The film offers an intimate, completely fresh portrayal of kids in South Central as they reveal their spirit and creativity. These kids have created art - and often family - where before there was none. illuminates an entire community by focusing on an artform as a movement that the disenfranchised have created. -Courtesy davidlachapelle.comDiscuss This Topic

DJ Muggs & Self Scientific Ink Imprint Deal - June 21, 2005 By : SGV

June 20, 2005 (Los Angeles, CA) Multi-platinum rap producer DJ Muggs has joined forces with critically acclaimed hip-hop duo Self-Scientific and formed a new label, Angeles Records. Angeles is the latest addition to Fontana Distribution, the independent distribution division of Universal Music Group (UMG), the world’s leading music company. Initial releases will include DJ Muggs vs. GZA, a unique collaboration between Muggs and Wu Tang Clan’s GZA. The second release, Change, is the much-anticipated follow-up LP by one of LA’s most talented, but underexposed groups, Self-Scientific. Both albums are due out in October.
“The industry has changed profoundly over the past decade,” explains Chace, the MC of Self-Scientific, about why they decided to ink a label deal of their own. “The majors aren’t interested in --or prepared to-- deal with developing acts anymore.”
“That’s where we come in,” explains Muggs, and adds that while most indie hip-hop labels today are putting out very left of center music, Angeles is about “true, pure, quality hip-hop.”
“Muggs and Self-Scientific are true entrepreneurs in every sense of the word,” notes Steve Pritchitt, General Manager of Fontana, “we are thrilled that they have chosen to be part of the Fontana family.”
Most known for his seminal work as the DJ and producer behind the legendary rap group Cypress Hill, Muggs has worked alongside rap heavyweights from Dr. Dre, Wyclef, Mobb Deep, GZA, and RZA, to name a few. Indeed with such an extensive credo, Muggs is a heavyweight himself. Also part of the group the Soul Assassins, Muggs today has his own radio show on Sirius Satellite on Shade 45 called “Mash-Up Radio” and tours with multi-platinum groups like Blink 182. Most recently, Muggs scored one scene in the new Ice Cube movie "XXX.” Self-Scientific, composed of Chace Infinite and producer DJ Khalil, burst on the scene with their much lauded LP, The Self Science. Since then, Khalil, long heralded as one of L.A.'s best up and coming producers, has kept busy working with Dr. Dre and Aftermath Records on a production deal. MC Chace can be heard on Sway and Tech’s latest album Back to Basics and Talib Kweli’s Beautiful Mixtape Vol. 1. The duo released a compilation earlier this year called Gods and Gangstas. Bay Area hiphop veteran E-40 will be featured Third Degree’s upcoming single, "Do My Thang." Third Degree (Wayne Gillory) hails from South Central Los Angeles where he grew up living right around the corner from Dub C of Westside Connection. I went to Hiphop High. Washington High School was where I came up. A lot of hiphop artists went there, like Dub C, Crazy Tunes from The Maad Circle, YoYo, DJ Alladin, and Sir Jinx, who DJ’s for Xzibit, and more. Crenshaw High may have had all the sports people locked up, but Washington has had the music people." explained Third Degree.
The album is set to feature 21 serious tracks, including the single "Do My Thang," featuring E-40. "I like real writers who have subjects and topics, I’m a purist kind of guy."
The releases album cover (Click Here) shows the corner of L.A.’s Imperial and Western, Third’s songs are said to "reflect hiphop sensibilities emanating on corners in areas all over the country, so his rhymes hit home with those who are both near and far. Wherever you are when you listen to this album, you’re still at the intersection of hiphop beats and masterful rhymes, as the Pedestrian makes his way through your speakers."
Lookout for more news and audio on the release coming soon, the release is set for release on Blak Ice Records.Discuss This Topic

New Flii Stylz Audio From "Rize" Soundtrack - June 16, 2005 By : Nima

You probably remember the Richmond MC Flii Stylz, who I introduced to ya'll ago. I have two brand new heaters from him here for ya'll, both tracks taken off the upcoming "Rize" soundtrack. Check out the songs below:
Flii Stylz - Beastly
Flii Stylz - Wildin' (ft. Dap Daniel)
Here is some more info on the movie "Rize":
"Rize" reveals a groundbreaking dance phenomenon that's exploding on the streets of South Central, Los Angeles. Taking advantage of unprecedented access, this documentary film brings to first light a revolutionary form of artistic expression borne from oppression. The aggressive and visually stunning dance modernizes moves indigenous to African tribal rituals and features mind-blowing, athletic movement at near impossible speeds. For the dancers, Krumping becomes a way of life - and, because it is authentic expression (in complete opposition to the bling-bling hip-hop culture), the dance becomes a vital part of who they are."

Cali Hiphop Group Nominated For Two Awards - June 16, 2005 By : Nima

Bay Area Bay Area rap veterans Big Quint (Quinton Morris) and Digg (Derrick Reed), who comprise the rap duo Under Da Influence (U.D.I.), have been nominated in two categories of the First Annual Bay Area Rap Scene Award (BARS). The awards show is slated for July 30th at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco. Under Da Influence was nominated for awards in two categories: Group Of The Year and Underground Album Of The Year for their 2003 release of "The Hangover." “It is an honor to be recognized,” says Digg, adding, “To me it, means our hard work has paid off, and that people are now listening.” The group’s ghetto gold albums are produced by his brother, Mr. Laid, and Chill Black, who together comprise Laid Black Productions. U.D.I.’s Big Quint notes, “It’s feels real good be recognized like that,” and that he feels the BARS Awards will help further unify the Bay Area hiphop community, and will help hiphop fans beyond those in Northern California become more familiar with Bay Area artists.
U.D.I. will be releasing a follow-up album, “Drunk Life,” late this summer on RNB Entertainment Group and Laid Black Productions. Discuss This Topic

Artist Insight : Empty Pocketz - June 13, 2005 By : Rud

Dubcnn as always takes some time out to give an insight on some Westcoast talent. Empty Pocketz is a duo which includes brothers Nick & Joseph Valentine (AKA Cello & Jodamself). The group - who now are reside in Los Angelesm California - was born in the deserts of the South-Western hemisphere, New Mexico, Phoenix during a welfare plagued summer of 1994. Since that time the brothers have made noise throughout the South-West & Westcoast with self-budgeted 12-Inch singles : "Who Got Themotts" (1994), "Illusions"(Vestry Records 1995), "Marvelouss..@!" and the EP "Letters From The Field" in 2000
Empty Pocketz presents rhymes of reality, with a humorous-sarcastic twist presente within an original sound made for the masses. The sounds range from jazzy to grimey with Cello behind 90% of the groups production. The duo has touched the stage with the likes of Krs-1, Xzibit, Tha Alkaholiks, The Beatnuts, Das Efx, Raekwon, Pharcyde and many more. Known for their great stage presence & realistic rhymes of life, Empty Pocketz is a remedy needed in the now saturated hip hop reservoir.
They are currently preparing to release their mixtape, Broke Like You" mixtape at the end of the month. It is set to feature Xzibit, Papa Roach, Ras Kass, Preston, Diggey Brown & Phil Da Agony. As ever dubcnn has some audio previews for you all to peep! Make sure you check these out, some serious heat!

Introducing: Mense (Audio) - June 11, 2005 By : SGV

Ask the legends about the road to greatness and they will speak loudly of trials and tribulations they endured. Their love for their respective arts not only inspired them to rise above their circumstances, it saved them. Recognized as one of hip-hop’s brightest rising stars, Mense has triumphed over more than most.
The Brooklyn based emcee’s story begins on the other side of the Hudson River in northern New Jersey. Forced to leave school in the 7th grade after an altercation, Mense decided to focus on music, often spending hours recording with his childhood friend, DJ T-Bone. Overwhelmed by the positive feedback from their live mixtapes, the duo decided it was time record a professional demo. However, there was one obstacle; both lacked the funds for studio time. Frustrated, Mense would eventually find himself on the wrong side of the tracks trying to gather funds for his music career by any means necessary. It was during this time he befriended a rapper\blood general from Harlem who had moved to Spring Valley, named Jo-Grams.
After hearing Jo-Grams freestyle in a parking lot, T-Bone called up Mense. And follwing an hour of rapping back and forth, Mense and Jo-Grams formed a bond that would last over the next several months. Dubbing themselves “Piranhas,” they quickly established themselves as one of the area’s top crews. He and Jo-Grams develped a well known and well respected reputation of power on and off the mic. It would take a tragedy to remove Mense from the streets and put him back on the right road.
Mense left the BK to attend school in Boston. After only a few months in Boston, he dropped out of school and returned back home to pursue his rap career. Within a week, a friend set up a meeting between Mense and Mel who manages DJ Envy. It would result in Mense’s debut on- DJ Envy Presents: Please Listen to My Demo Volume 1. Praised for his track (# 3), He would be called upon to contribute to other major mixtapes including those by DJ Vlad, DJ Gspot and Sickamore.
Though the journey was a long one, it’s no surprise that Mense has risen to the forefront of the rap game. His life has given him constant material to write about, while his mental stamina and wit keep the fans asking for more. Continuing to crush the mixtape scene with freestyles and songs, he is now recording his official album while negotiating with major recording labels. Currently, he is preparing for the release of his mixtape, "The Transporter", hosted by DJ Whoo Kid, as well as the release of the music video for the street single, "Lonely Streets". His life is best summed up with a quote he often refers to when asked about his journey, “The Road Was Rough, But I Decided to Ride It”.
Here's audio from his Transporter Mixtape with Whoo Kid.

Ying Yang, Chops, Pitbull, Chingo Bling (Audio) - June 11, 2005 By : SGV

The Atlanta duo Ying Yang Twins have found success as of late with their first single off their new album United States Of Atlanta, entitled "Wait (The Whisper Song)." The Twins keep a whisper flow through out the entire song telling the ladies how they're going to put it on them in bed. As with any hit, people hop at the chance to Remix it or put their own spin on the track.
Philly Producer Extratrodinaire, Chops, is well known for his Remixes. He flipped the track with his own beat and add his own verse! As of late he's remixed Snoop Dogg's "Drop It Like It's Hot," Swisha House's "Still Tippin'" and many others. Underground heads will remember Chops from his group the Mountain Bros. Others might remember his 2004 album Virtuosity which featured Ras Kass, Planet Asia, Phil Da Agony, Bahamadia, Kanye West and many others.
So if his resume doesn't impress you, then go a head and peep

Mr. Bad Boy Latino and the Tamale Kingpin have been putting it down together a lot lately and this song is a great showing of their chemistry on tracks. The Cuban/Mexican combo go hard dropping their Spanglish rhymes in the whisper flow!

Lifestyle Prepare Debut Album, "Lubrication" - June 9, 2005 By : Rud

Many of you will already be familiar with the Lifestyle Crew consisting of Snoop Dogg’s Brother Bing and DJ Quik’s Cousin, H.I.T. from our exclusive video interview in October 2004. Well word is that they are working on their debut album entitled, "Lubrication." The duo are currently recording songs for the release and, at press time, have five tracks completed. Among them is the track "Bottoms Up," which is said to flaunt early Sixties and Seventies influences, samples the late R & B artist, Lee Dorsey, and features Snoop Dogg. The release is set to feature notable producers such as Daz Dillinger, Jelly Roll (Xzibit, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre), Fuzzy Felix, and Meech Wells, son of Motown legend Mary Wells (Snoop Dogg).
H.I.T. took some time out to explain the album’s title, "Lubrication," : It means something loose, something fun, energetic and exciting. Once you hear the words “Lifestyle and “Lubrication,” you know what that album is going to be about. It is still a metaphor though. It’s not about having sex every song. It also has an implied meaning about protecting yourself and being cautious. Although lubrication is slippery, you do have to have a proper hold on things in your life."
The album’s release date has not yet been confirmed, however the highly-anticipated debut is slated for release on Lethal Entertainment, headed by “Greedy” Greg Jessie and Thomas Bruno, a club owner in Houston, who also books concerts in the Midwest. “Greedy” Greg has executive produced a slew of platinum and gold albums that include A.M.G.’s "Bitch Betta Have My Money," DJ Quik’s "Quik Is The Name" and "Way Too Fonky," Tone Loc’s "Loc’d After Dark", Domino’s first two albums on Def Jam Records, and Big Lurch, who is featured in an interview in the July issue of "XXL Magazine." Look for more news, audio and features on the release in the near future!Discuss This Topic

Introducing: C.Ride (MP3 Audio) - June 9, 2005 By : SGV

Growing up on the north side of Dade County, (Carol City), C.Ride was exceptionally gifted academically, which allowed him to skip the 4th grade. C.Ride underwent tough times after his parents separated when he was merely 8 years old. Although very gifted, school was always an annoyance for C. Eventually dropping out of school, C.Ride would always hang out with his best friend Marcus. C.Ride and Marcus would get into all kinds of trouble, but everything suddenly changed when Marcus was tragically killed in a car accident.
Marcus's death brought C.Ride back to reality and inspired him to find a legal hustle. At the age of 16, C.Ride returned to school. He eventually graduated and went straight to the studio, where he and his friends started recording songs about their friend Marcus. Once his music got out into the public, he started receiving positive feedback and subsequently realized that he needed money to start pushing his project. Together, C.Ride and his clique (Jackboyz) decided to rob, steal, and get money by any means necessary.
Loaded off Weed and Cocaine night after night; C.Ride and his clique felt untouchable. Until one night, while holding up a store, they found themselves surrounded by police. Everyone ran separate ways and "by the grace of God," C.Ride escaped that night and relocated to Atlanta, GA the next day. C.Ride was the only member of his clique able to escape that night. While living with female associates and working a nine to five C.Ride felt very uncomfortable. C.Ride wanted to get back to the studio.
Searching for the finances to support his dream, he began selling weed heavy, which eventually led him to sell other drugs. After Two drug charges, two years of probation, and a brief jail sentence later, C.Ride decided that he wanted to go back to his hometown of Miami. By this time C.Ride had product. A CD that he made in Atlanta fell in to the hands of Super Producer Duo Cool n Dre, and this is when the real roller coaster began.
We have two MP3's for you to peep. First is a track entitled "Fresh" in which you find C.Ride bragging and boasting about his skills.
C.Ride - Fresh
Next up is a Freestyle over Linkin Park's "Numb." Joining C on the track is Dre of Cool n Dre and Miami's Dirtbag.
C.Ride feat. Dre (of Cool n Dre) & Dirtbag - Numb Freestyle
We'll be bringing you more on C.Ride soon! You know how DubCNN does it. Your Number ONE spot for West Coast, East Coast, Mid West, Down South and International Hip Hop! Accept no substitutes!
Enjoy!
