Lots of Nintendo news
« on: May 25, 2006, 09:58:10 PM »
First, the Wii remote will apparently also double as a microphone (it has a built in speaker), and will probably also act as a voice over IP device.  Hella cool.

Second, Nintendo officially announced today that the price of the Wii will not exceed 250 bucks in America.  Doubly cool.

Third, Nintendo's profits for last year were 873 Million dollars.  They made almost a billion dollars profit, while developing the Wii and the DS Lite, etc.

In comparison, Sony's gaming division earned 75 million dollars profit in the past year.

Last year, Nintendo made 11 times as much profit as Sony did... and everybody's looking for Nintendo to go out of business.  Last year, the Sony PS2 was immensely more popular than the Nintendo Gamecube, and Nintendo made 11 times more money than Sony.  Last year, both Nintendo and Sony released portable game systems, and Nintendo made 11 times as much money as Sony.  Last year, Nintendo and Sony were both r&d'ing their new consoles, and Nintendo made 11 times as much money as Sony.  I won't even mention Microsoft because they haven't turned a profit to date on the Xbox or the 360.

Now; doesn't this explain and show everybody a little bit why Sony's scrambling to copy the Wii remote?  ... because Nintendo is the big bad booty daddy in the video game industry, to this day.  Sony only wishes it had the success that Nintendo still enjoys.  If Nintendo can make this kind of a profit with a lame duck gamecube, imagine the profits that will be rolling in this fall when they launch the Wii and it shits allover the PS3's sales.

I'm not too sure whether I'm gonna buy tha Wii I wasn't exactly thrilled about all those Mario related gamez that came out on tha Cube and I'm expectin' an invasion of those typez of gamez on tha Wii, I only bought tha Cube for those Star Wars gamez and RE 4 ofcourse...

Tha one thing that bothered me tha most concernin' tha Cube was that it did NOT have digital surround sound l was sooo dissapointed with that, I'm assumin' tha Wii iz capable of this though...

I don't like the games that tend to be made for Nintendo systems. The majority of them are childish, with comic graphics - which was great as a kid, but being in my twenties I kinda don't wanna play jump n run with an italian plumber to collect stars, or rescue the princess with an elf who wears tights. The controller and the system features seem cool, but it's all worth nothing if the games don't appeal. I'd rather play awesome games on a regular system, than Super Mario Part 234 on a revolutionary system.

Well, a couple things:

1. They're making a fortune (11 times what Sony made last year) off those type of games, so I wouldn't expect them to change a proven, working business plan much.

2.  Not all of the games are that way, there are several 'mature' games for the Gamecube and it seems there will be even more for the Wii.

3.  Nintendo at heart has always had a simple family friendly philosophy.  They didn't even allow blood in their games when Mortal Kombat came out, for instance.  So the Wii is never going to be 'the place' to get all of the violent stuff, although they've mellowed a bit and let some of that on the system.

4.  Too many times violence is a gimmick.  GTA in all of it's incarnations is a shitty game, wrapped around a violent gimmick.  Nintendo obviously doesn't give a fuck about simple gimmicks like slightly better texturing in a game, or slightly more violent gameplay, etc. they honestly are trying to make games that are more enjoyable simply because they're better games.  I can't hate them for consistantly trying to be the most creative original system out.  It looks like this time, they're going to get it right.

Yea; I remember that rumble.  I also remember Sony stealing it from Nintendo.  Hey, remember the analog stick on the 64 that Sony also stole?

I think the rumble feature is overrated anyway... To me it was just too weak and it was rather a gimmick than a real addition to the gaming experience... Itīs nice when itīs supposed to give hints or alert the player of something... like in Windwaker when Tetra wanted to talk to you... the A button was glowing and the controller was shaking... that was nice... but when itīs supposed to resemble a rocky road or something it just fails miserably I think...

The best rumble/force feedback feature can only be found in the arcades anyway...

edit: I still got my Gameboy, SNES and N64.. but I sold my NES just to afford the SNES back in the day... I really regret that :(

I even ahd that pimp ass advantage joystick.. that was the shit...

I cant imagine playing a first person shooter like Call of Duty 2 on a console without a rumble,i think it adds to the gaming experience. Even in Fight Night Round 3 when ur boxer is tired the rumble will beat like a heart beat to let u know ur boxer is tired, or in Madden getting sacked or sacking someone,or nba 2k6 when theres a hard foul, its little things like this, that we may take forgranted but really do add to the overall gaming experience.
