Mario and Sonic Together at Last
Mascots to star in new Olympics game for Wii and DS.

 March 28, 2007 - Finally the dreams of SEGA and Nintendo fans come true as news hits thats Mario and Sonic are set to star side by side in a new game for Wii and DS, based on the 2008 Olmypics.

SEGA made the historic announcement this morning and confirmed that Mario & Sonic at the Olympics (as it's known) is due for release this Christmas. The game's currently in development by SEGA Japan and Shigeru Miyamoto is supervising the project.

Players compete in events around venues based on official locations for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Featuring a supporting cast of recognisable faces from the world of both Sonic and Mario, players can choose from a range of characters including Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, Tails and more.

Innovative use of the Wii and DS control systems are promised, enabling players to race down the 100m track, participate in exhilarating table tennis rallies and churn water in swimming heats to compete for the gold medal.

"Mario and Sonic have been respectful rivals since the early days of video games," said Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. "In fact, for a long time they have been discussing the possibility of one day competing against each other. Now that they have been given the perfect opportunity to meet at the Olympic Games, we may finally learn who is actually faster, Mario or Sonic?"

This looks great, a definite purchase for multiplayer madness. Hopefully Sega will get some of the people who were involved in their classic Decathlete to work on the game.

word... lol i mean the concept is cool... but it could be done for a much better game... or something... olympics? lol how about you add it to mario party or like smash bros or mario kart... but i guess you dont want to mess up those franchises or something... or just strickly a game called Mario Vs. Sonic... and have it like mini games and stuff... with all the classic characters or something... dont know

Yeah I mean, what fucking connection do sonic or mario have to the god damn olympics. It doesn't even remotely make any sense.

But to be totally honest, i think no matter what, the game would be a piece of shit. I hate games that are just a bunch of dumbass mini-games. The olympic thing just makes it gay on top of shitty.

I think they're probably doing it because they've had so much success with all of their Mario sports games.  Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Baseball, Mario Strikers, Wii Sports, etc. all sold tons of copies.

I don't really get the negativity, have you never played stuff like Track and Field, Decathlete, etc, just pure classics, simple gameplay but quality in multiplayer. If this harks back to that sort of style then I think it will be a very enjoyable game, especially with the potential for the Wii controller to be used to better mimick the events.

no i can totally see that... so it could be great... but what im looking at is kinda weird... like why base it off the olympics... when you can base it off themselves?? mario and sonic are big enough on their own... they dont need the olympics... but im looking forward to it thats for sure.... but in all reality sonic will smoke they shit out of mario on all the running events!

They'll probably make all the characters the same speed to make it fair.  Sonic ought to be faster and Mario stronger, though. 

They're basing it off the olympics because it's something they haven't done in a while.  I dont' see why it's a bad idea, it gives them about 20 or 30 minigames they can put in the game.

lol i dont think it will be shit,i think it will be  a solid title, i admit that a sonic and mario platformer would be better but i still think this will be solid and the first step towards something bigger

I don't think that something like the 100 meter dash with Mario vs. Sonic would work very well. Not much excitement on who wins that one.

Sounds like it's just gonna be a different version of Wii Sports though, with familiar characters.
