By today's watered down standards of hip-hop that shit was a classic. "Phone Tap" was an instant classic even in those times, Canibus' feature on there was blazing, and there were a few other cuts on there that people really liked.

No, it still isn't a classic. I like the album but compared to Dre's other classics leading up to that, it just wasn't all there. It's very much like the post-1997 Death Row material. Above-average music that seems to get more and more overrated by nostalgic fans who have a hard-on for the past. Dre's production is solid but the concept is very gimmicky in all the wrong ways. It's Dre and Nas doing a fake Mafiosio group concept album. It's a fun piece of experimentation but it was a noticeable misstep for both of their careers. In hindsight, every piece of music you even moderatly enjoyed back in the day seems like a fucking classic if you compare it to modern day music you hate. If we're bringing up Dr. Dre projects with NY rappers that get unfairly shit on, I'm still saying "Big Bang" deserves another day in court.

When was mafioso music in style to begin with? It was a concept album that really hadn't been done yet.

As far as to why the album flopped, you can put that one on Trackmasters. The Dre tracks were consistent; the other tracks were all over the place (excluding "Desperados" and "Executive Decision"). "Firm Biz" shouldn't have been on the album; only reason it was on was because it fit with what Puffy was doing.

u crazy.firm biz was the best song on the whole album.
