Yup.  Wiz, Juicy J, 2 Chainz, Curren$y, and a few others have brought a "brand new" standard back to the game, mainly Curren$y & Wiz.  Plus he's also one of the very very few YouTube! artists to ever not get corny.  Even though I have to add that if keeps rappin about $ he'll soon play himself the fuck out.  He's staying in his lane so to speak but it's a good chance that it'll backfire on him

yeah, just like in 2001 going gold was a sign of success for solid rap releases, now you have to cross over to go gold. going gold in 2001 is like 200k nowadays. in 2001 tha eastsidaz went gold with their second album, they would never do it in this time and age. conversely, BOB's album The Adventures of Bobby Ray went gold in late 2010, in 2001 this would have gone at least 2x platinum.

Think about it -- Mack 10, Game, Jay Rock and Menace were all trying to get on tracks with him.

I think it's the other way around, especially for Mack 10. when they signed Mack 10 to Cash Money he was more established than Weezy even though his career was seriously ebbing. but i feel your for the rest of the post.

Not exactly.  Lil Wayne's first album was officially certified Platinum while his second was Gold, and when Mack 10 signed after that, Mack 10's albums prior to that were only certified Gold, plus Bang or Ball didn't get certified anything.  Obviously at that point in their careers, Mack 10's resume and relevance to hip-hop was a lot stronger than Lil Wayne's, but it's not as if Lil Wayne was a nobody, plus their album sales at that time were very similar, though Mack 10's declined while Lil Wayne's increased.

Either way, by those rappers co-signing him by doing tracks with him (which makes him appear more certified), they're obviously going with it in exchange for the exposure, regardless of what the guy is putting across and how fucked up it might be.  So maybe when Beiber gets a little older and wants to start getting flamed up, they'll co-sign him too if the money is right.

It's just such a radical shift from when before people would get punked if they started Crip Walking and weren't from the hood (even though it was so trendy 10-15 years ago), but now people can claim Blood this and Damu that without repercussion as long as your music is in heavy rotation.

B.o.B just wouldnt have been as popular in 2001 as Tha Eastsidaz, and thats not even factoring that both Stars backing Tha Eastsidaz and B.o.B were out then.  That lane he's in (and helped create for himself) simply wasnt there in 2001, that kinda Rap simply wasnt accepted like that back then.  Hip Hop is way more diverse now than its ever, its just Bloggers looking for contraversy to get everybody talkin to make u think Rap music and Hip Hop culture was something different when it comes to certain issues and accolades back then.  It kills the history of the game a little too, word to the HHID album. 


White folks may (or may not in cases) support the culture financially but Black folks have always and will always dictate it.  We wouldnt have been so receptive to a Pop Artist (in his case the literal definition of it) back in 2000/2001/2002 and so on.  It took a while and alot of ground breaking to get to this point in the culture.  It just wasnt always this diverse and demographically unanimously accepted as it is today.

But it didn't get that way without compromises.  Hip-hop culture and mainstream were so far apart 10-15 years ago, whereas now, they're a lot more alike in terms of style.  Now you have rappers dressing like everyone else (skinny jeans, V-necks, skater brands, skateboards, hipster shit) rather than the style more associated with the streets.  Similarly, you have non-street people wearing stuff that used to be street-oriented.  For example, I have a friend who just likes wearing bandannas in his pockets ALL THE FUCKING TIME but he lives in Irvine, pretty much the safest city in the U.S.  We went to Vegas earlier this year and he was still wearing it, and sure enough someone who ended up being from Rollin 40 Crip asked him what was up, and I just said my friend (who was drunk) just likes sporting bandannas.  So there's a lot of crossover in style now.

I thought the album was weak, and far from a classic, but these numbers are huge for this day and age in rap.
I mean i guess he had to do atleast ok numbers, because he's got the interscope machine behind him.

all i'm saying is that an album like BoB's with two strong radio friendly singles would have gone 2x platinum in 2001, when he only went gold in 2011. and conversely a hardcore rap album like Tha Eastsidaz which went gold off the strength off their first effort and Snoop Dogg's backing would have had trouble selling copies in 2012 because even legends have a hard time selling copies, Snoop's last gold-platinum selling projects was in 2006.

if you think about it, Nelly was popish, Snoop started going pop in 02 when he started fucking with Pharell (it resurrected his mainstream career) and when he dropped PTCTBTB, Jay-Z became larger than life as soon as he dated Beyoncé and fell out with Dame, and this was in 2002. 2002 was a stepping stone for the mainstream accolade of hip-hop. after that, the boundaries between hip-hop & rnb & pop music have kept getting blurrier and blurrier.
