COMPTON VS. MISSIONARY ... WHICH DO YOU PREFER?
« on: August 11, 2025, 09:43:06 PM »
WHICH ALBUM DO YOU THINK IS BETTER? TWO ALBUMS THAT UNDERWHELEMED MANY PEOPLE..

I PERSONALLY THINK "COMPTON" IS A CLASSIC AND VERY UNDERAPPRECIATED .. DRE CAME WITH A FRESH SOUND THAT WAS TREMENDOUSLY PRODUCED AND LAYERED TO PERFECTION. ALL THE FEATURES DID THEIR THING AND THE ALBUM WAS BANGIN FRONT TO BACK. SONICALLY IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS TAILOR MADE TO BE PLAYED IN STADIUMS. THE GRIPE MOST PEOPLE HAD WAS THAT IT DIDNT HAVE THE TRADITIONAL DRE SOUND VOCALLY OR MUSICALLY.. BUT TO ME, IT HAD HINTS OF IT, JUST EVOLVED TO FIT THE MODERN TIMES.

ON THE FLIPSIDE, "MISSIONARY" SOUNDED FORCED AND INORGANIC TO ME. LIKE THERE WAS ZERO DIRECTION OR COHESION AND THE ALBUM JUST SOUNDS LIKE AN OVERALL MESS.. SONICALLY, IT SOUNDED THIN AND VERY WEAK COMPARED TO DRE'S PREVIOUS WORK, ALMOST LIKE HIS EAR WAS AFFECTED BY THE ANEURISM. SNOOP'S VOCALS, WHILE MORE ENERGETIC, SOUNDED COPY + PASTED AND OVERLY CONTRIVED. EASILY THE BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT FOR ME IN TERMS OF ANTICIPATED ALBUMS. I WOULDNT SAY ITS AN AWFUL ALBUM, BUT NOWHERE CLOSE TO WHERE IT SHOULD BE CONSIDERING ITS THE REUNION OF WHAT IS ARGUABLY THE GOAT RAPPER PRODUCER COMBO + A FOLLOW UP TO WHAT MANY CONSIDER THE GREATEST ALBUM IN RAP HISTORY..

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED, WHICH ALBUM DO YOU PREFER?

Compton is another classic and up to the Dre golden standard.  It’s a shame they didn’t push the album—there were a few tracks on there that sounded like they could’ve been monster singles/videos.

I still remember where I was the first time I heard Dre come in with…

“I just bought California!!”

Those were good times—the NWA movie was blowing up, huge success.  My life had turned around I’d just finally gotten my first legit teaching job (doesn’t sound like much but it’s a step up from wiping buttholes in nursing homes for the previous 10 years for 11.00 an hour) and the girl of my dreams.

“Compton” by far…“Missionary” was so disappointing that I have no desire to revisit it

It’s odd because I actually enjoyed Missionary the first time I listened thru beginning to end with no skips…

…and then never went back to listen to it again, lol

But COMPTON was my go to album for like 3 months from August until around November it was top of my rotation.

“All Fall Back On Me” 10 of 10
“All in a Day’s Work” 10 of 10
“Talk About It” 10 of 10

Compton has so many problems to be fixed. Mastering issue, wack fillers, lots of skips, no integrity, even my favorite song "all in a days work" has potential but they couldnt arrenge and mix it the way it was supposed to sound way better. There is no hits or classics to take place in dre's discography.

Missionary is not as good as we all expected but there is an integrity, concept, even there are fillers no skips and there are a few hits and bangers.

To me its Missionart >>>> Compton. However both are under dre's standarts.

Played the fuck out of both on release... but ultimately they underwhelmed massively.

Compton Summary:

Overall disjointed - felt like Detox leftovers, merged with experimental Focus/Dem Jointz shit
Standout tracks, Talking to My Diary, All on Me, Medicine Man, Intro
Z-list features that pale in comparison to previous Dre albums - King Mez, Justus, Dem jointz
Snoop features ususally a standout on Dre albums... completely forgettable here
Dre's voice/flow = FAIL
Over-produced
No standout Single/Track

Missionary:

Patchwork album - felt like a mixtape
No usual suspects involved (D.O.C, DPG etc) and it shows
Singles killed the hype
Doesn't BANG on a good system like previous Dre productions  :mjcry:
The Sting song -  :dead:
Dem Jointz, Gangsta Pose -  :dead:
Some great moments - Hard Knocks, Sticcy Situation, Now or Never
Generic ghost writers - Only Snoop album that didn't have one good quotable or memorable lyrics.
Snoops delivery great but sounded forced with cut and paste lines
Over-produced, album made by committee

I probably appreciate Compton more for what it was, and am more disappointed in Missionary for what it wasn't.

you didn't like "last dance with mary jane", "thank you", "fire"?
there's no dpg or doc but there are method man and sam sneed on 3 productions.
but yes, over produced, unnecessary beat switches, wrong singles killed the hype..
it's not snoop's fault at all. dre will make productions like this as long as he doesnt get rid of ICU.

Missionary By far. I prefer snoop rapping than dre rapping. And i read about paste and copy . Thats all dre's rap career behind the mic. I liked only 3 songs in compton. And dre sounded like he wanted to be in the sound on the moment whan compton came out. Missionary as is flow but not as much as Compton. And remember at that time we wanted detox. Not ComptoN. Compton as no replay value for me. With Missionary they are past their prime so the for me they were less expectation.

Missionary.

I love Dre's rapping (prior to compton). I love his voice and I think he commands the mic. When I heard Compton, I was like "WTF?"
I couldn't even tell when it was dre rapping, and the first few listens through I couldn't even recognize the other west coast features.

Compton is possibly the biggest disappointing album ever for me.

At least with Missionary snoop had a pretty good flow and I enjoyed some of the songs. Now Missionary was also very disappointing but I gave it more spins than compton.

I loved 'Thank You' and the Sneed/Meth contributions.

Also enjoyed ‘Mary Jane’ and ‘Fire’ but they’re not tracks with much replay value (imo) and feel out of place on the album.

For me Missionary just seemed manufactured... that was my biggest issue with it. Whereas Doggystyle, Chronic and even later albums like No Limit top Dogg felt organic.

Listen to the Clipse new album, that sounds organic. Like they created that shit with Pharrell from top to bottom and the beats mesh flawlessly with Pusha and Malice's lyrics and topics.

Missionary sounds like jam sessions cut and pasted together. Snoop has to take some fault because according to Dre said he wasn’t fully locked in during the making of it.
