This was sick...everything beat, bass, keys, melody all perfect  -

Khaild Muhammad's speech was itself chilling.

I wished there was just an instrumental version of this too, Cold 187um's finest.

I always hum along to it, this the kinda dark G-Funk i love.

MC Ren's sophomore album, The Villain in Black, is the record that quietly but convincingly cements his place as the most underrated voice to emerge from N.W.A. Long overshadowed by the commercial peaks of Dre, Cube, and Eazy, Ren steps fully into his own here, delivering a focused and formidable showcase of his skills. Arriving three years after Shock of the Hour, the album reflects a period of personal change shaped by his conversion to Islam and the loss of his mentor, DJ Train. Those experiences deepen the writing, as street-level realism intertwines with political awareness and philosophical weight, all set against a cleaner, more refined G-Funk backdrop.

The opening track, "Bitch Made Nigga Killa," establishes a cold, ominous mood through subterranean bass, sharp West Coast drums, and eerie synth lines. From there, songs like "Keep It Real" and "It's Like That" strike a balance between classic G-Funk swing and the raw aggression Ren honed in his N.W.A days. Where his debut leaned heavily into horrorcore aesthetics, this album favors more traditional Hip Hop structures without sacrificing its sense of menace. That darker edge still surfaces on tracks like "Mad Scientist" and "Live From Compton ‘Saturday Night.'"

Ren's performance is consistently sharp and versatile. He shifts comfortably from braggadocious confidence on "Mind Blown" to apocalyptic intensity on "Bring It On," while tracks such as "Muhammad Speaks" weave in socio-political commentary and Nation of Islam influences. The production complements this range, pairing ribcage-rattling low end with melodic guitar touches. Guest appearances from Above the Law, Bigg Rocc, and Triggerman add texture without pulling focus.

Though a few moments lean toward familiar bravado, the album's pacing forms a cohesive arc from hostility to reflection. The Villain in Black builds on Ren's strengths with sharper writing, richer production, and greater thematic depth, making it an essential listen for fans of West Coast rap and N.W.A's deeper cuts.

The female singing vocals on TVIB was by Trski of G.B.M.

Been resisting MC Ren recently since the Retrospect YouTube video I watched. A track that is one of my favorites he is featured on is the rare D.O.C. Deuce album.. "The Shit" still rides. Was almost an NWA reunion to me..

Today, we're diving deeper than any documentary has ever gone into the story of The Villain of N.W.A — MC Ren.
I'll take you through his journey, uncovering the real reasons behind his fallout with Eazy-E — and why the two wouldn't speak for more than two years.

All told in his own words, pulled from rare interviews he gave back in '94.

I'll also detail how he eventually became way closer to Dre than he was with Eazy in the early 90s, despite staying on Ruthless while Dre left to create Death Row Records — even being in the studio with Dre and Snoop during the recording of The Chronic, which led to Snoop giving him a shout out on the album's intro.

We'll also explore his intertwined destiny with Snoop, from his path into the Nation of Islam to the N.W.A reunion album they began recording during the infamous Up in Smoke Tour, which was never released.

This is an independent episode tied directly to our animated docuseries, N.W.A Origins — and it's part of a collection of standalone bonus episodes highlighting the overlooked key figures who played a role in the group's rise.

Was that really a shout out on The Chronic intro?
Always sounded like a challenge to me.

Just Chin Check and Hello are N.W.A (both Dre produced/featured as well), but i get what you mean.
Even the 2 above joints mentioned really were N.W.E. (Niggaz without Eazy).

The D.O.C one was light (for their standards) and the beat of the Last Meal one sucked bad, worst on the album.
When i had read the 'Set It Off' credits on the back of the C.D. i thought woah, that's going to be the best song on it!
There was even a line in a review at the time...''Dre must of ditched the re-union album plans after hearing his old homies on that''.
Snoop dropped the ball and chose the wrong beat for that one.

one of the greatest what ifs

The N.W.A what if's were N.W.E/Helter Skelter (Ren/Snoop featured), Eazy gettin the crew back together, and Not These Niggaz Again (2001, Chin Check/Hello Era and Snoop joining in).

We missed out on all of them  :'(

This hook up with Cube over Bobcats beat was N.W.A esque, amps me up everytime -
