Looks like the song features Snoop too.
After the release of Jane Handcock's album (very good album), I hope Kurupt's album is next and a good one too.

because the previews of Kurupt in the death row studios, there were excellent instrumentals of Battlecat! for me his last real album was Streetlight, so it's been a long time. I have hope in Kurupt. If we have an album of the same level as W.A.W.G. solo Kurupt I sign for it.

Kurupt has been on a pretty good run since W.A.W.G. Compared to what he did before, I'm looking forward to this track. When I remember what he was doing with Zodiak... I'm happy to see him with Snoop, Battlecat! It's like Snoop, Is It a Crime isn't in my top 10 Snoop albums, but in 2025, I'll happily take this album! Same with Daz RR&GB 2! And I'm waiting for the 3rd!

I actually think Kurupt sounded pretty decent on this better than he has in a while

to be fair, snoop is a household name and kurupt isn't. Snoop can drop an album with no promotion like Iz it a crime and it will get far more attention than a kurupt album will with promotion.

You're right, Snoop can get attention easily. But Kurupt isn't somebody unknown and with Battlecat production on the entire album, a lot of fans would look at it.

Jane Handcock's album was delayed because they decided to work on 2 or more songs before releasing it and got the song with .Paak for the album. They delivered a very good album eventually.
I'm fine to be patient as long as the album is decent because it feels like the last hope of getting something decent from Kurupt, maybe to wake Kurupt up again.

Would you say the time that you spent in the studios with Dr. Dre and all them - did they show you how to be in a freestyle battle? As the MC that he was, did they help you in the ways of structure?

I am not sure where you are located, but October London has been on tour for the past two years, he is well known now and a well respected R&B act, he has been to the breakfast club and a few other podcasts, he had songs on the chart. Tha Dogg Pound is not as relevant anymore.

I believe it is up to their management team and budget. When I listen or watch Kurupt interviews he doesnt seem like he has full control of his career, at least with Death Row. Tha Dogg Pound as a group is corny to me in 2025, very gimmicky and forced.

I genuinely think this is just a project for Kurupt fans.
I don't think anyone is expecting anything special but to keep his legacy alive.
Kurupt's few radio & podcast interviews not really adding excitement to the project, more like the opposite.

Snoop's not behind the project as far as production goes. Yeah, there won't be much of a buzz or marketing push. Snoop doesn't push any of the artists on death row other than himself. There'll be some videos and some online chatter on social media, but that'll be it. It's not like Kurupt is going to be pushed back into the mainstream with this one.
So don't be expecting a groundbreaking album with radio play and mainstream attention, but it'll be a good little album for us long time fans to enjoy. That's all that should be expected and then you won't be disappointed.

yeah you're right...over the years I've began to accept "Kuruption!" for what it is, I do enjoy a lot of the tracks mainly on the West disc but at the time of its release I felt the same way "what the hell is Kurupt spitting on this album?"

I think the majority. Warren G said he submitted a beat which some were saying might end up on this album or not. I could see one or two producers doing a cut, with BC still doing the majority. It's rare you see an entire album produced by one person, usually there's one or two others sprinkled in. We shall see.
I hope this is an actual full album with 16 or 17 tracks and not this 8 or 10 track 2 minute song album BS some people have been doing lately.

Could very well be! I think i've already listened to Special more than I did all of Missionary. I don't think it's gonna top Streets or Space like some people have said. I get it, Kurupt's old now, i don't expect him to match his 90's stuff, but it would be nice if it got within the same stratosphere. Even if it ranked in his top 5 albums, i'd be happy.

I agree BC is a great producer but Snoop should let kurupt drop the album with daz on there but shows how snoop is. This is clearly a snake dogg directive. It's a nice track and Kurupt sounded nice in terms of his vocals, but the issue the I have with hip hop (specifically West Coast) is the countless lazy rehashing of the same samples over and over again.
I get that Missionary didn't land well for some people, but I really enjoyed it and glad that they tried a different direction.

I gave it another spin last week, Snoop vocals wera amazing, the beats were great, subject matter not so great. Overall all those element didnt mesh well together.

It's worth a listen for certain- Snoops flow at times is amazing...shows signs of what he could be capable of still. Some interesting song concepts as well. I really like Shangri-La, even if it does borrow the Stakes is High beat. Hardknocks is another one I replay lots, and Gorgeous had potential but the hook is brutal. Outta da Blue back and forth raps from snoop and Dre feel nostalgic, but the production and hook are terrible. I also bump Now or Never and Thank You consistently. Overall, the album has some highlights and shows momentarily what Snoop and Dre could do, but Dre relied on tired samples at times, and while he had Snoop FLOWIN, the lyrics didn't always fit.
Doesn't mean I don't spin the album from time to time- in fact, it's the only album Snoop has ever spit some new subject matter lol

Makes sense. With his potential based on his flow (top five all time), the expectations are always higher than the product , and that was never more present than this Missionary album

Sorry, i didn't list all the features....Snoop, BJ Chicago Kid, Jane Handcock, Butch Cassidy, RBX (talking only, no verse), D Smoke, Ill Camille were pretty much it. Couple of hook singers i'm not familiar with. No heavy hitters from the DPG fam unfortunately besides Butch Cassidy. Awesome, thanks for that info. Makes sense. So yeah, everyone saying the old Kurupt is back and he sounds hungry again, etc....but you wonder how many of these songs were made a while ago, before his medical issues.

Imagine being disappointed that Kurupt is dropping an album on Death Row Records in 2026 entirely produced by Battlecat with multiple features from Snoop Dogg and also Soopafly and Butch Cassidy.
Looks like lots of features, but Charlie Bereal, Blaqthoven, Jane Handcock, and BJ the Chicago Kid are just hook singers. There's less than one handful of rap features.
It's a short album, but I rather it be dope & concise than have a bunch of filler on here.

Have been enjoying the 5 tracks released so far, playing the videos back to back on YouTube and bumping in my car, they all go well together, very cohesive....especially the 4 we got recently (Sneak Attack, Gunna, Me N The Boyz, Mystic River).

From the horses mouth - they were going for like 5 tracks EP before but they kept doing more tracks in the studio, that Fuzz and others heard it and asked them to keep going.
This is more personal interview, Kurupt explained fully what happened during his health crisis.
Appreciate we didn't lose this legend, music aside happy he now have a 2nd chance...hopefully he will never go back to those vices again.

Against tha Grain - The E.P. is an EP bootleg compilation that consists of the songs that Kurupt and Koch Records removed from Against tha Grain, as well as other filler tracks that had nothing to do with the original release.
The diss records were recorded in 2003-'04 however they were not released because after making up with Snoop Dogg and the rest of Tha Dogg Pound, Kurupt did not want to see any backlash for his previously recorded diss songs for Death Row Records and since he had just made a deal with Koch to release Tha Dogg Pound's reunion album, they removed the songs from the retail version of Against Tha Grain.
A group of Death Row and 2Pac fanatics who operated under the name "For The People Entertainment" were able to purchase these tracks from someone who had access to them. They were released online in digital format, and Kurupt has gone on record saying it was in poor taste to do, and just done to cause drama.

Album Review: Tales from My Hood by Kurupt & DJ Battlecat
Ruling out the banks and liquor stores before hitting all of them anyway, Kurupt makes a record whose robbery writing outpaces anything he wrote about money.

Ricardo Brown was 16 years old when he relocated from Philadelphia to Hawthorne and 18 years old when he settled in Los Angeles. Nearly everything that he has ever written since then has been filled with people. Kurupt has always had names, and the particular detail that he is likely to go for first would be one that locates a person, whether it is about who is in the car, who was around when things went awry or whose house was empty that night. DJ Battlecat produced Tales from My Hood (who steals the show with classic West Coast and G-Funk production), and Kurupt uses much of this album to roll the name calls.
The job on "Sneak Attacc" is robbery whereby banks, liquor stores and the houses have to be ruled out and then put right back in. "We ain't hittin' banks, we ain't hittin' liquor stores/We ain't even doin' jack moves no more," he says and adds, "We hittin' all of the above." Snoop counts six shots and marks the route from Crenshaw to Slauson, and then he begins to go wild through the verse like a night that has gotten out of hand. All the parties have to be hit, homies have to be seen on the wall with the blower, someone gets shot, the chase begins, and police start looking for the people associated with Snoop. In the second verse, the chase continues from inside the car: "Heater in my left, steering wheel in my right hand." He is thinking about Texas. He would like to put money together so that he could set up a caravan out of town, split up and get back together at the spot if everyone makes it.
The bag must be got on "Me N the Boyz," and getting it takes the whole song that comprises late nights of getting his money straight, a black card he has graduated to and calling shots from Long Beach to Watts. None of it has any night attached to it. The only line that has a person in it is the one that says, "They don't sell they bodies, they just crack the stores." The vintage "West Coast Muzik" thins out further. Butch Cassidy uses his verse to summon some girls over, Kurupt uses his last verse to take the girl from her feet up to her waist, and the song is complete before anyone in it has done anything.
D Smoke joins in "Wat U Do to Me" and adds more people in the room than either of these two songs has done: the women, the two-stepping, the party that is never-ending, and gives credit to Battlecat for laying the foundation. Snoop takes the last verse and uses it to give advice, practical ones like "Keep a good lawyer, Tom Sawyer." Kurupt uses his own verse to roll lane to lane with the oldies up, thinking about 1988, stopping by for a blow of an eighth. "Damn, I miss Nate, but gotta get back on the grind," he says and proceeds to hard times, hard living and heartaches. Ill Camille starts off "Mindstate" with the best guest feature on the album, remembering the day she met him and what he called her thereafter: sister and one of his killers, and he answers with a verse about going to war and coming back to going to war again, touring and coming back to touring again, and staying away as one of the reasons why he is still alive today.
Heartbreaks and heart mending and putting the heart back together again like Lego blocks on "Love Letter," there are long walks, trips to the Caribbean, and the house she turned into a home. Above it all, Jane Handcock sings about lovers who have come and gone and carries the song. The line about Nevada is the one of his that sticks, as he knew that once they hit the state they were going to marry. There is more life early in "Special," where he tells her that her game is too far back like a train caboose, rides down the street in an aqua vintage with ocean blue outside and lizard inside, and he folds a man who yaps. However, in the second verse he proceeds to write his bucket list and turn frowns upside down, and the woman he started out talking to vanishes in the furniture.
Four women appear before the one that he is addressing on "I Don't Luv Her," one in the streets, one a lawyer, one with green eyes and one named Latoya, and he ends the verse by saying that they have nothing on her. Then BJ the Chicago Kid starts singing a chorus about hurting her a million times with lies. Soopafly comes next, swearing there is no hate, reporting he thought she was on rotation between the two of them, and adding that he does not even like her that much.
The words on "Gunna" start outrunning the sense two lines into the first verse, "Detrimental, essential, Monte Cristo" into whole bodies saturated and entire blocks motivated. He works Warren G, Snoop and Dr. Dre into the same run and admits that he has got a problem in the head and drinks too much. However, one image is released from the others: "My thoughts is dark clouds, electrical storm/I can't see the light when all the lights are on." He calls himself standing tall, barbaric, Jurassic, gargantuan, a genius, a Venus flytrap and a seated tarantula. Verse two is meek compared to this, mostly cars and switches, and the first verse holds the whole song on its own.
On the previously-leaked "Mystic River," he is purified like Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water after two sons and three daughters, and life sucks the breath out of a person like mosquitoes, and he scooped the game up like Tostitos. He is locked up banging the locks, stuck in the sanctum with a Newport menthol box, and stops to inquire whether there is any way out of the bad decisions he keeps making. However, the second verse is expansive, from Gabon to Nicaragua, and then narrows to four questions asked to a homie, including what he thought about his friend getting rolled up and what he wants now. He answers for him, and the answer is memories and the future ahead of him. These two verses contain more of him than the rest of what he wrote here.

Kurupt is a 53 year old MC, songwriter, actor & occasional producer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who relocated to Hawthorne, California to comprise 1/2 of Tha Dogg Pound with Daz Dillinger. He eventually made his double solo debut Kuruption! under A&M Records almost 3 decades earlier, following it up with a widely praised sophomore effort Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha & Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey until dropping Against tha Grain through Death Row Records in tandem with MNRK Music Group to mixed reception. Same Day, Different Shit produced by Daz & his previous full-length Streetlights each left audiences further divided even if the latter helped launch Young Gotti's own imprint Penagon Records, remaining on Tha Row now distributed by gamma. following Daz's departure to have DJ Battlecat solely produce his 7th studio LP.
After the intro, Sneacc Attacc" featuring Charlie Bereal & WWE Hall of Famer Snoop Dogg begins spitting that gangsta shit over a g-funk instrumental whereas "Me N the Boyz" samples "Mothership Connection (Star Child)" by Parliament to talk about getting money. "Special" featuring Jane Handcock finds the pair getting romantic over a smooth beat while the summery "Mystic River" represents the D.P.G.C. even after Daz & Snoop fell out.
D Smoke appears on "Wat U Do to Me" bringing back the g-funk vibes instrumentally to kick off the 2nd half of the album talking about him & his Death Row inmate being unable to fake how they do things but after "Love Letter" featuring Jane Handcock soulfully addresses the people in their lives who were made for them, "West Coast Muzik" once again shifts towards a g-funk direction representing the west coast hip hop scene altogether.
"Mindstate" featuring Ill Camille gets the Tales from My Hood's final act going embracing a jazzier sound & some grown man subject matter Tha Kingpin's delivering while "I Don't Luv Her" featuring Akeem Ali & Soopafly brings the trio together so they can promise their soulmates that they're not in love with anyone else over a g-funk beat. The closing track "Gunna" sends it all off suggesting for people to duck whenever he's out in public.
Considering how much of a superiorly skilled performer Kurupt has always been on the microphone, I found myself being more excited for Tales from My Hood than I have been with Daz's last few solo efforts & it sure enough makes up for Against tha Grain's mediocrity by surpassing Tha Streetz Iz a Mutha to become Young Gotti's finest hour by himself. DJ Battlecat's g-funk production paired with one of the most underrated lyricists of all-time who also became 1/2 of the Gotti Mob & 1/4 of The HRSMN makes for possibly the strongest album Death Row's dropped this year.

The production, the arrangement, Kurupt's with a slightly different type of flow at the start, the singers, everything is so good musically on this track.

I enjoyed this album for what it is, nothing 'bad' or skippable on here to be honest.....the transition from SPECIAL to MYSTIC RIVER is awesome....it's nice to have Kurupt on form, yes it would have been great to have Daz on this but hey.

Finally did my first listen.. maaaan this project is super dope! Like a 4.5/5. Or 9/10.
Battlecat crushed the production and Kurupt is totally on form. We're so fortunate to have this project in 2026.

Really nice project with a real funk/party vibe, Sneak Attacc is the perfect track to open the album after the intro.
It would have been great to have a couple extra tracks with that more aggressive flow like "Gunna" or a more introspective song, also a Daz & Kokane feature would have topped it off.
Oh and shame Survival wasn't on the album but I guess it wasn't produced by Battlecat.

I've downloaded the album and listening to it on this sunny Sunday afternoon and it sounds good as hell.
Everyone came correct on this, some grown-man stuff from Kurupt on a few tracks which is nice to hear and there's some nice segues between tracks which really add to the musicality of the album so shoutout to Battlecat for that.
Shame that Daz and even Warren G couldn't be on here and share in the success of the album. Real petty how they removed the Daz shoutout and his vocals from Mystic River but it's whatever. At least we got Snoop, Butch Cassidy and Soopafly on here.
Nate would have fit really nicely in the mix too, in fact there's one track where it sounds like someone is imitating him a little bit but it would have been so good to get the real thing.
Overall a very good album and I'm pleased we finally got it. Congratulations Kurupt 8)

The album, which arrives via Death Row Records/gamma., is the first time the Dogg Pound rapper and iconic producer have worked together in an official capacity in over two decades, dating back to their work on Kurupt's debut solo album, 1998's Kuruption!, in particular, the classic cut "We Can Freak It."
"He was the first producer I worked with when I first went solo," Kurupt said of Battlecat, speaking to Complex at the Los Angeles release party for their new album. "He was there to help elevate me and take me to that next level, and he's doing it again right now. He's taking me there with a whole project we've been dying to do for quite some time."
Snoop Dogg, who besides being a longtime friend and collaborator of both Kurupt and Battlecat, played quarterback on Tales From the Hood, initiating the collaboration and putting it out via his Death Row imprint.
"When Snoop said he wanted to use me exclusively to produce this album, it blew my mind because he could use anyone he wants," Battlecat told Complex, before sharing his thoughts on the album as a whole. "The vibe reminds me of Gang Starr in that it's a very unique two-man combination. We weren't following that, but that's what it reminds me of. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince — that's another one. You know? Those two duos ain't no joke."

Tales From the Hood features an array of tracks that offer variety throughout, but there's one record in particular that stands out above the rest because of its history: "Mystic River." The collaboration first surfaced nearly 20 years ago, and it's now been given its long-awaited official release — much to the delight of Young Gotti.
"I love that record," Kurupt explained. "It's a journey through my mind and a travel through time, and it's just a whole different caliber song that has lasted through time. It feels brand new still to this day."
He added: "When [Snoop] Dogg [brought the idea of the album] to the table, it felt good to still have 'Mystic River.' It means something to me because that's where we started at."
Tales From the Hood also marks Kurupt's eighth collaborative project since the release of his 2010 solo effort, Streetlights. In the past 16 years, he's dropped albums with The Hrsmn, Diirty OGz, C-Mob, and, of course, his Dogg Pound running mate Daz Dillinger. He also has a joint album coming out later this year with Rakim and Masta Killa.
Speaking on why he loves collaborating so much, Kurupt put it down to the brotherhood. "To be honest with you, the camaraderie is everything to me," he explained. "For this album, it's me and DJ Battlecat. It's about both of us. You know what I'm saying? I'm the rapper, he's the DJ. We're taking it back to the original form of hip-hop."
"There's gonna be a Kurupt album by itself coming eventually, but not now. We're having fun," he added.

The camaraderie that Kurupt loves so much is very present in the connection he has with Battlecat. The respect they have for each other translates not only into great music but a friendship that seems unbreakable.
Making sure to give his collaborator the flowers he deserves, Battlecat called Kurupt "extraordinary" and "a blessing," adding how much of an impact he's made on his life and artistry. "It's a blessing that I finally have a someone who can be the voice of me through my struggles as a young man coming out of the ghetto."
He added: "I never thought I would have someone like him in my hands. It's like magic. In fact, it's bigger than magic 'cause it's sent from the man up above. He put someone very delicate and powerful around me so I can have a voice in music."

Yeah, i don't think it's necessarily a thing with 80, but it's just a shame albums like this can't get into a Target or Walmart. It does make it hard to support an artist when it costs 50.00+ with shipping to buy their album. Only the die hard fans will commit to that so it does hurt the artists because the casual fans won't drop that kind of money. Whereas, if the album could be found retail for 14.99, more people would buy it. I think that's all that was being said. Too bad we can't get wider mainstream distribution for albums like this like there used to be.

Yeah I bought a new PC in May. Not only was it twice as expensive as the one I bought in 2018 but I couldn't get them to put a DVDR drive in it so I had to settle for an external USB drive.

I agree - for me in the UK, the shipping costs almost double that of the CD. Hence why I didn't buy Daz' last 1334529 albums.

And buying CDs is pretty rare these days; this is the first one of the year for me as a West Coast CD collector.
The next one will likely be "The Documentary 3", if it comes out this year and perhaps the new Big Prodeje album, entirely produced by DJ Ak 8)

I think the RnB elements of the album really help it out and provide a softer balance to the gangsta elements, something which has lacked for the most part in Kurupt's previous albums.
This album will age very well, I'm certain of that.
I also think an MC like Kurupt does really benefit in having one producer like Battlecat produce his entire album front to back. It's probably the best thing for him at this point in his career to be taking this approach. Most albums in this vein turn out with a much more cohesive sound, although there are obviously classic albums with a multitude of producers as well.

Nice album, was expecting a bit better musically with full Battlecat production but still a good listen. I'm comparing production to the last full length Battlecat produced album I know - Boo Ya Tribe's Westkoastranostra (with the exception of the 1 Eminem produced song) some of the beats on that were amazing (the tracks with WC and Crooked) but nothing on this one hits fully like those tracks. But still not bad.

Yep, I really like the album just like everybody else. I'd put it neck-and-neck with Tha Eastsidaz EP for the best recent Death Row release.
I have to give big props to Kurupt for dropping Love Letter. I would've never thought he had that in him. For once, he dropped the gangsta persona and made a real song about genuine human emotion. Congrats to him for having the artistic courage to make a song like that.
Of course, I expect NY heads not to like this, because once again they are using very, very familiar Parliament samples, but Cat brought ought the energy in Ricardo, which is crucial! No lazy freestyles or gasping for air at the end of bars. It all sounds well-produced, and I really like the experimental style of Mindset as well. As somebody earlier said in this thread, songs like Love Letter and Mindset break up the monotony, and finishing with the most lyrical song was a smart move - as was opening with the most traditional Westcoast songs. It's just a smartly constructed album.
I wonder if not having Daz's class clown-ass around made Kurupt more focused, or almost dying did. Or maybe it was just Cat. Who knows? But, yeah, good album. Thank you, Kurupt.

Gave this album another spin. It's definitely growing on me but I find it's too short. I know it's best to cut the fat, but it would be great to have another 2-3 songs. I still miss Kurupt's old flow and lyrics

After listening to the whole album, im a little disappointed if im honest.
A lot of people on here were really hyping this album and to me it didn't live up to that hype.
Don't get me wrong, it's a very good and solid project.
It's good to hear Kurupt sound healthier and not rap gibberish nonsense as we've seen in some past tracks.
There were some really good produced tracks from Battlecat, but the production (except for a few tracks) sticks to the same played out generic westcoast sound of the 2000's.
Maybe i'm old, but I just need something different. If I want to listen to that sound, i'll put on an album from that era.
Don;t get it twisted, it's a solid effort, but it's not what I was lead to believe it

I felt the same. Was expecting something amazing with Battlecat and Kurupt together but received something that was just alright. Lyrics for Kurupt are a step up but this mostly reminds me of the lower effort Battlecat tracks you can find on Cali Iz Active (Stop Lying), WAWG (imma dogg) and BCT (LAX)

Wow. I feel production on this album is WAY better than the 3 songs you listed. Imma Dogg and LAX? These beats are way better.

I don't know maybe I'm just losing interest in music in general as I get older. "40years old and still rapping uurgh" maybe listening also goes the same way. I don't seem to like anything new and no new releases get me excited like the 2000s era. Even the old stuff I don't really want to listen to anymore. Over the last few years there's no earbuds on anymore whilst working and even in spare time. I read some articles the other day how there was no hip hop songs in the US top 40 recently so maybe I'm not the only one feeling this way?
Throughout the 00s and up until now I always thought the best production on the mainstream west coast albums is usually by Battlecat. Take Xzibits Shut Your mouth for example off Kingmaker as a recent example he still does it. But nothing on this one really is memorable to me. I do think Battlecat and Jane Handcock should do an album though. The tracks on Algorithm they did together and on here sound great.

I guess im one of the few people that enjoyed Missionary (and still do). I get that many we disappointed with that project and isn't what they expected (I also have criticisms), but I appreciate that they took a risk and went for a different sound.
Like I previously said, I thought Kurupt's album was solid, just not incredible. And that 'classic sound', I sometimes just find a bit too generic and played out for my liking.

I'm in my mid 40's and most things are just re-hashed. Just look at Hollywood movies - so many remakes or sequels of old movies.
I think hip hop is just cannibalising on itself. It seems, a lot of inspiration is taken from old hip hop tracks instead of other obscure genres that I would have to go out of my way to listen to.

Another album from Death Row's zombie era suffers from basically everything, but there are hints of soul and funk to keep things interesting.
It makes sense why Snoop Dogg would buy the Death Row trademark. After founder Suge Knight filed for bankruptcy in 2006, it was passed like a hot potato among holding companies and distressed-asset managers. Snoop acquired the brand and his own back catalog in a 2022 deal, treating them as low-overhead intellectual property—which may explain the abundance of screen-printed Death Row gear at your nearest Burlington Coat Factory.
Snoop didn't manage to get his hands on The Chronic or 2Pac's masters, so he's mostly building a streaming catalog from scratch. These latter-day Death Row records hew to a formula. Snoop clears a few blockbuster samples—Sly Stone, the Police, Tom Petty, whatever—enlists Jane Handcock and October London for cut-rate R&B hooks, and keeps his fingers crossed. The proof-of-concept was 2017's overachieving Neva Left, which found Snoop freestyling over the "C.R.E.A.M." and "Check the Rhime" instrumentals (turns out autopilot Snoop is still pretty good!), but it's been diminishing returns ever since, bizarre jumbles gaming one algorithm or another.
Tales From My Hood's quirks can be chalked up to Snoop's erratic business sense. (Why is it named after a mid-'90s B-movie that disappeared from cable ages ago? Why do these albums always have pictures of the artists from 30 years ago?) A full-length from Dogg Pound rapper Kurupt and L.A.'s DJ Battlecat bears all the hallmarks of Death Row's zombie era: random medleys, unimaginative samples, features for unknown labelmates, seemingly AI-generated album art. A song like "Mindstate" captures all the highs and lows. Indie darling Ill Camille kicks off with a spoken-word intro; BJ the Chicago Kid pipes in with elegant, multi-tracked harmonies over a tastefully spare percussion track. Kurupt flashes an off-kilter flow and five-dollar adjectives, giving way to a 90-second guitar coda. There's plenty to like about the roster and the blues-club intimacy, but in lieu of trajectory and transitions, it's a total hodgepodge.
The soul and funk interpolations scattered throughout Tales From My Hood are similarly hit-or-miss. The nadir is "I Don't Luv Her," an obvious New Edition flip with verses from Dogg Pound sideman Soopafly and Mississippi rapper Akeem Ali, sandwiched between another BJ hook; it beggars belief that these guys ever shared a room. On the plus side, there's "Me N the Boyz," which barely strays from its Mothership Connection source material. It's a can't-miss sample—Battlecat layers fresh drums and horns, ceding the stage for one of Kurupt's brightest performances in years. He's buoyed by pure instinct, recapturing the charismatic warmth of "Welcome Home" and "Where I Wanna Be."
Tales From My Hood coheres around P-Funk homage, both in Snoop's Bootsy Collins impression on "Sneak Attacc" and the "(Not Just) Knee Deep" horns on "Wat U Do to Me." Although smoked-out vibrance is Dogg Pound's stock-in-trade, it's hard to tell if Tales From My Hood was conceived as a full-throated tribute, or if they couldn't think of anything else. (They could at least have dialed Kokane or Suga Free for fresh interpretations; Collins and Mr. Clinton are themselves still performing, and have appeared on past Dogg Pound outings.) The same samples have been reheated over and over since The Chronic, and these renditions might've turned up on any Dogg Pound project in the last quarter-century. Then again, that's more or less the point—it's all grist for Death Row's licensing mill. If Snoop's got work for his old pals, that's just as well.

yep Illmatic is what maybe 40 minutes long? Regulate is probably closer to 35 and Dogg Food is like 71 I believe...all 3 are in my favorite albums to listen to and Illmatic is widely considered the GOAT by hip hop heads and critics along with Doggystyle...you could even make a case for Dogg Food being even better than those 2 due to its length and quality
