Garciaparra is officially on the DL now :(

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers placed first baseman Nomar Garciaparra on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of a strained muscle in his right side and recalled James Loney from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The 21-year-old Loney was in the lineup Tuesday night against Atlanta, batting fifth and playing first. His big league debut, however, was in jeopardy because of daylong rain.

Garciaparra, signed as a free agent during the offseason, was injured while swinging in his first-at-bat Sunday in the Dodgers' exhibition finale against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.

When Garciaparra returns, he will be playing first base for the first time, having been a shortstop most of his career.

"I believe it's only going to be a two-week thing," Garciaparra said. "Let's get this right so we can put this behind us."

Garciaparra said he wasn't discouraged, but added: "Disappointed and frustrated, no question. There is never a good time. There's a time when you can be a little more cautious. This is the time."

The 32-year-old Garciaparra has spent extensive time on the disabled list in three of his last five seasons, playing only 21 games in 2001, 81 in 2004 and 62 last season.

He said he's never had this kind of injury.

"I've read about it and see guys have it all the time -- now I know what it feels like," he said. "I feel better today, which is good. I trust the medical staff here, they've gone through this, they've seen this injury in the past. I'm putting it in their hands.

"Let's say it's an eight-day, 10-day thing -- you can't play a man short that long."

Dodgers manager Grady Little said Loney will share first base duties with Olmedo Saenz while Garciaparra is sidelined, with Ramon Martinez also possibly playing first.

"We were very impressed with this kid in spring training," Little said. "We like the way he swings the bat. We like the way he plays first base."

Loney said he figured he might get the call when he heard Garciaparra was hurting.

"I feel great, man," he said. "I saw I was in the five-hole. That's cool. This has been a dream for who knows how long. It feels like a real good team here. I feel relaxed -- ready to have fun."

Weather permitting, Loney was scheduled to face Braves ace John Smoltz for the first time. Before meeting with reporters, he spent time watching video of Smoltz.

"I'm going to be ready, excited, prepared," he said of his first at-bat.

Loney has never played above Double-A, but has made quite an impression over the past three springs. He hit .284 with 11 homers and 65 RBIs in 138 games with Double-A Jacksonville last year. The Dodgers made him the 19th overall selection in the June 2002 draft.

The Dodgers are starting the season with two regulars sidelined -- center fielder Kenny Lofton was placed on the DL on Sunday because of a strained calf.

"That's what goes on -- it's life," Lofton said. "That's the way the game is. You can look at other teams as well having injuries. Bad luck or something. You can't put a finger on it. If it's going to happen, let it happen now."

Lofton was injured Thursday in an exhibition game in Las Vegas.

Title: Re: The Official 2006 Los Angeles Dodgers Thread
Post by: Javier on April 04, 2006, 10:39:49 PM
Yeah he had 41 saves last year, but he's not really one of those closers that you can say will be great year in and year out since he has an average K rate and a high walk rate, which leads to a high WHIP.  We used to have better set up men, like Mota and Brazoban in2005.  He'll be slightly above average but shouldnt be a full time closer after this season with the Dodgers

^ yeah I heard him say that a couple times too. It's goin to be interesting when he comes back. I wonder where they're goin to play him? Vin said yesterday that they are exploring the outfield as an option...I dunno know tho.
Title: Re: The Official 2006 Los Angeles Dodgers Thread
Post by: WestCoasta on April 05, 2006, 04:45:51 PM
^^ yeah it's a stupid ass situation.... a problem because of what they're paying Furcal

in the paper Izturis said that he's gonna do whatever this year when he comes back but the next season he doesn't really wanna play outfield.... and I really don't blame him

he won a fuckin Gold Glove and got hurt trying to repeat in that category... why would u not use him at the position?

what's gonna happen is, I'm almost positive Izturis will be in the final year of his contract starting next season, so if they don't let him play shortstop, I'm guessing he's gonna leave for sure once he's a free agent

then after he leaves, he's gonna be the next Omar Vizquel

and I'ma think to myself  "man I called it"  ;)

If he pitches well with the 51s (and this will be tough since it's an extreme HR park), he should be able to pitch in the big leagues by June.  By june he'll have 6-8 starts I believe.  It's gonna take a complete decline from either Tomko or Seo to give him a chance in the rotation or an injury for him to get in

Hell yeah.  If you notice his stats in 2004 and his stats in 2005, the only difference is the lack of power.  Jayson Werth appearently came back too soon, and he didnt have his power because his wrists were still bothering.  He can easily hit 265/335/470 range, which can make him our 2nd best OF.

yep, I called that shit the moment I saw who was in their bullpen

from day one when the relievers kept giving up homers in that 11-10 loss
I just knew some more collapses were brewin  :stir: :baseballbat: :firedevil:

I'm pretty sure there will be many more to come as well...

Osoria and Kuo are the only relievers I have still have faith in besides Baez and Gagne of course.  Carter and Saito shouldn't be on the roster.  I wish we would have kept Duaner Sanchez, he was getting better with his K rates and a lower WHIP too.  Tomko is living up to his nickname Bomko.  Pathetic.

Title: Re: The Official 2006 Los Angeles Dodgers Thread

Who is Cody Ross?

"Ross, 23, signed as a fourth-round pick out of a New Mexico high school in 1999. He gets mixed reviews as a prospect. His proponents see him as a gritty overachiever who gets the most out of his tools, while his detractors see him as too small (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) and not talented enough to play regularly in the majors. Ross tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while trying to beat out a bunt against the Indians last September, but he has fully recovered. He has good pop for his size and plays a solid right field with a strong arm, though he may not hit for much of an average if he doesn't become more patient at the plate. He has decent speed. Ross batted .287/.333/.515 with 20 homers, 61 RBIs and 15 steals in 124 games at Triple-A Toledo last year, and went 4-for-19 with a grand slam in his first taste of the majors. He'll probably open 2004 at Triple-A Las Vegas."

It looks like Cody Ross has followed the same road Werth took in the minors, with their stats. He's actually increased his plate discipline from 2004 to 2005. He's had good pop with 56 HR in 299 AAA games over the last 3 seasons.

If they try and send him back down to the minors he will have to clear waivers. After this perfomance I know its only one but I don't know if he will.
Title: Re: The Official 2006 Los Angeles Dodgers Thread

Even if we ignore today's performance, I doubt he would have been able to clear waivers.

sucks for him...

if this was 2 years ago, it woulda been worse...

guy doesn't know how to throw anything than a fastball down the middle
he'll just continue to be a 5.00 ERA guy until he steps his game up and throws different shit...

and with him out, I think this clears a spot for Ross on the roster when Lofton comes back

still, trading him for Lance Carter is ridiculous

We're seeing the differnce this year when it comes to how closer the prospects are to being MLB Ready.  Last year they weren't ready yet, so when the injuries hit us that year we struggled.  And this year is completly different, the young guys are stepping up big time.

Jeff Kent's been put on the DL :( He was starting to play well after that weak start

Quote
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Infielder Jeff Kent went on the 15-day disabled list Thursday because of a sprained left wrist, becoming the latest in a series of Los Angeles Dodgers who have been hurt.

Kent's stint is retroactive to May 28; outfielder Joel Guzman was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to take his roster spot.

Kent missed his fifth straight game Thursday, when the Dodgers opened a seven-game homestand against Philadelphia. He sprained his wrist swinging at a pitch against Washington on May 27.

"The progress hasn't been there," he said. "I've been trying to swing a bat every day and aggravating the joint, and it's just not working out."

Kent received an injection Thursday to lessen the pain in his hand, and said he doesn't anticipate being away long.

"There's no big tears, there's no fractures of the bone, so I'm hoping this is just a bad, bad sprain that is just going to take a few days to heal," he said.

As Kent went on the DL, the Dodgers got a major dose of good news when closer Eric Gagne came off it. He was available Thursday for the first time since June 12 following two surgeries on his right elbow.

"Everybody has been anticipating it for about a year-and-a-half, almost two years now," Kent said. "The crowd is going to love it. It's going to be cool."

Gagne has converted 18 consecutive saves dating to Aug. 28, 2004. He has posted a 1.83 ERA since the start of the 2002 season, tops among all major league pitchers in that span with 200 or more innings.

"I'm anxious, excited," said Gagne, who wasn't assured of getting in Thursday night's game. "It's like the first day of school. My arm feels great. My stuff is pretty much the same as before."

Shortstop Cesar Izturis, who hasn't played this season after surgery on his right elbow, was set to begin a rehab stint Thursday night at Las Vegas.

Also missing time this season have been Nomar Garciaparra and Kenny Lofton. Garciaparra has been on a tear since coming off the DL on April 22. He batted .375 in May, when he had 28 RBIs.

Still on the DL are outfielders Ricky Ledee and Jason Repko and catcher Dioner Navarro.

"We've been doing all right taking hits," Kent said. "We've been fortunate enough that a lot of guys are playing good baseball, not just a couple guys. When you got a lot of guys playing good baseball, a team can take a few hits here and there."

I'm really liking the way Ethier is playing. I'd really like to see how he'd do playing a full year. If the Dodgers can add just one big HR hitting bat this offseason I think they can solidify themselves as the best team in the division. and it looks like they finally got the bullpen situation straightened out.

Dodgers get the win in dramatic fashion last night. Ramon Martinez gets the walk off home run in the 15th inning last night.  :o

Our lead in the West stays at three. We now have a four game winnin streak. Lowe came in for three innings of relief and gets the win. Which is a good sign that he is not injured and expects to make is regular start on Friday.

In other new the Dodger have been said to be inquiring about David Wells. If he we get him that means that wack ass Hendrickson will be moved to the bullben or get sent down.

Here's an article of last night game:

Loney exploring new frontiers for LA
First baseman learning outfield in effort to help big-league club
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

James Loney has been working hard to add outfield skills to his repertoire. (Jon SooHoo/Dodgers)
Dodgers Headlines

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- He wins a Triple-A batting title and has nothing left to prove down there.
But when he arrives at Dodgertown the following Spring Training, he finds first base occupied by a wildly popular All-Star that isn't moving. So the bosses give him an outfielder's glove and tell him if he learns the position, he might make it to the big leagues faster.

James Loney, meet Mike Marshall (the outfielder).

Twenty-five years ago, a scenario nearly identical to the one Loney currently faces unfolded for Marshall, only worse. Marshall not only brought to Vero Beach a Minor League batting title (.373), in 1981 he also led the Pacific Coast League in home runs (34) and RBIs (137), becoming the league's first Triple Crown winner in 25 years.

Like Loney, Marshall was added to the postseason roster after a September callup. But his path to the Major Leagues was blocked by Steve Garvey, and the next Spring Training, manager Tom Lasorda and his coaching staff would keep the lights on at Holman Stadium while they hit fly balls to Marshall until dusk in a crash course on outfield play. Loney, a natural first baseman, has been taking fly balls in the outfield this spring.

"There are a lot of similarities," said Lasorda, now the Dodgers' special advisor to the president. "It was a dilemma, but for the club, it was a good dilemma to have."

For the player, though, maybe it's not so good.

Marshall not only didn't make the Dodgers' 25-man roster that spring, when he got back to Albuquerque, his first-base job had been given to Greg Brock, the first left-handed-hitting power prospect to come through the farm system in years, but one who lacked the athleticism to play any another position.

General manager Al Campanis decided that Marshall was more versatile. He was initially tried at third base before settling in the outfield, where he spent most of a 10-year Major League career that included two World Series rings but left many -- particularly him -- wondering what might have been.

"It took me until '84 to recover from being moved off first base," said Marshall, who now manages Yuma in the independent Golden League. "If I had it to do over again, I'd have made a bigger stink about going to the outfield. I'd be concerned if I was the kid. It will be interesting to see how he handles it."

So far, Loney is handling it the way Marshall did, saying the right things and doing what he's told.

"I can see how it was tough for him in that position," Loney said of Marshall, "but for me, the outfield will open up more options and make me more versatile."

Outfield experience did get Marshall to the big leagues in 1982 as a replacement when utilityman Derrel Thomas broke his ankle. Marshall took over right field in 1983.

Loney's in a tougher jam, now that first baseman Nomar Garciaparra has a new two-year contract and the outfield appears loaded with Luis Gonzalez, Juan Pierre and Andre Ethier starting, Jason Repko the versatile backup, and Matt Kemp on the cusp.

"People say I've got nothing to prove going back [to Triple-A]," Loney said. "I thought I was real consistent throughout the season. If I'm not in the mix here, there could be a trade. What I want is to be around to help the team win. That's the No. 1 priority."

Loney hit .380 last season at Las Vegas. Including time spent replacing the injured Garciaparra, Loney played 48 games with the Dodgers in the regular season. He hit .284 with four homers and 18 RBIs, but one monster game at Coors Field accounted for half of his home run and RBI totals. He then went 3-for-4 against the Mets in the playoffs.

Loney spent a month playing winter ball in the Dominican Republic and monitored general manager Ned Colletti's roster moves, while not obsessing over them.

"I saw they re-signed Nomar and I heard my name in rumors with Boston about Manny [Ramirez]," said the 22-year-old former first-round pick. "Obviously, I want to help the big-league team, and obviously they've got a tough call to make. I got here in the right frame of mind, and I'll put up my numbers and see where it goes."

Marshall was a powerful right-handed hitter with average speed and above-average first-base defensive skills. Loney is more of a line-drive left-handed hitter, although his power is increasing, as demonstrated by that nine-RBI game at Coors Field last year. Defensively, he's so smooth that many feel he could become a Gold Glove first baseman.

In the outfield, he said he's comfortable enough tracking fly balls, but his game appearances are only a handful. His running speed is maybe average once he gets going, and he worked with a speed trainer over the winter to develop better acceleration.

With Marlon Anderson the only left-handed hitter on the projected Dodgers bench, Loney might make the Opening Day roster as much for being left-handed as anything. As for returning to Triple-A, Loney would rather not even think about it.

"I'm just trying to get ready for the season and not focusing on [making the team], because I can't control it," he said. "A lot of guys are in the same boat."

Notes: Roster hopefuls impressive
Bigbie the hitting star, White shines in relief in Dodgers' win
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

Larry Bigbie is trying to rebound from a foot fracture in 2006 and surgery for a hernia that had been bothering him for two years. (Jon SooHoo/Dodgers)
Dodgers Headlines

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- Jason Schmidt threw two scoreless innings Friday, but the $47 million free agent's Dodgers debut was overshadowed by a pair of non-roster players fighting for career survival.
Outfielder Larry Bigbie was the hitting star in a 12-7 win over Washington with two homers, a double and five RBIs, while reliever Matt White looked like a billion dollars retiring all four batters he faced with a strikeout.

Bigbie is trying to cash in on a return to health, while White set aside the commotion stirred from his sudden off-the-field wealth to set down the Nationals. Bigbie, once a starting outfielder for Baltimore, dealt with a foot fracture in 2006 and surgery for a hernia that had been bothering him for two years.

"This is great, but it's one day," said Bigbie, who also homered in Wednesday's intrasquad game. "I was with the Cardinals last year and watched them win the World Series, and it kind of hurt watching, but it lights a fire to get back and be part of that."

Although the Dodgers' outfield appears set with starters Luis Gonzalez, Juan Pierre and Andre Ethier and reserve Jason Repko, Bigbie could force his way onto the bench with continued power from the left side. The only established left-handed hitter likely to make the club, Marlon Anderson, is nursing a sore elbow. James Loney, who also bats left-handed and is in contention for a bench role, had a two-run double.

"This guy's got a lot of talent," manager Grady Little said of Bigbie. "He's just had a series of bad injuries. For a new guy, he's certainly put himself on the map in a strong way early in camp. A lot of things can happen in a month."

Bigbie has been under the radar in this camp, while the media have been in scramble mode over White, a sudden international celebrity since word of his 12-million-ton rock quarry made the rounds, from CNN to CNBC to the Associated Press and soon to be featured in the New York Times.

He showed in this game, as he said a few days earlier, that he can also pitch.

"Regardless of whatever is happening outside baseball, I'm being evaluated every day on pitching, and it's been up to me to keep my focus and get batters out," White said. "I hope all this dies down. I never signed up for all this, for it to take off like it has, my head is spinning. I never wanted it to become a distraction."

White might be a longer shot to make the Opening Day roster than Bigbie because of pitching staff depth, but there's always a place for a left-handed pitcher who can get outs. White doesn't throw hard, but he's added a sidearm delivery, still has an effective slider and he's confident enough despite bouncing around for a decade.

"He's got decent stuff and he's not scared to challenge any hitter," said Little, who managed White briefly in Boston in 2003. "It didn't look like the distractions affected him."

Speaking of distractions: Joe Beimel made his first game appearance since his regrettable bar injury helped undermine the Dodgers' playoff chances last year.

Beimel allowed two hits, but pitched a scoreless ninth inning with the assistance of a double-play grounder. Although he pitched well enough last year to more than double his salary and would seemingly have a spot on the staff, he said he's not taking anything for granted.

"I thought I had a job with the Pirates in '04 after three straight years there, and they cut me the day they would have had to guarantee my contract," said Beimel. "This is definitely a different situation, but I went in relaxed that spring, hurt my back, tried to come back too soon and didn't pitch well. I don't think I'm taking Spring Training lightly."

Beimel wrapped up 5 1/3 scoreless innings by Dodgers relievers. Following White were two innings by winning pitcher Greg Miller, one inning by Rudy Seanez (in Eric Gagne's familiar No. 38), then Beimel.

Schmidt pleased: The Dodgers' new starter was effective, if not flawless, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout in two innings and 26 pitches.

"It felt like two innings of Spring Training," he said. "In Arizona, it's so dry, your change-up slips out of your hand and the breaking ball doesn't really do anything. Here, everything comes out good. It's like reality."

Hendrickson struggles: Sabotaged by a pair of errors that led to a five-run inning, Mark Hendrickson was charged with seven runs (five earned) in 1 2/3 innings following Schmidt. Hendrickson is a candidate for the fifth-starter job with Hong-Chih Kuo, Brett Tomko and Chad Billingsley.

"I was better in the second inning, as far as sharpness," said Hendrickson, who threw 50 pitches, a high figure for the first spring outing. "I felt strong for the amount of pitches I threw. I have to stay focused on what I did good and what I did bad, regardless of the results."

Injury update: Anderson apparently will be out longer than originally indicated, as the club is concerned that the flare-up of his surgically repaired right elbow could recur with overuse.

Anderson, who underwent surgery to remove bone chips in October, irritated soft tissue by throwing and hitting too much.

"He'll have to get to where he can swing the bat with no aggravation to the elbow before he plays," Little said.

Anderson said he had the same surgery 10 years earlier and had the same setback then, too.

"I threw too much and that irritated it, which made it painful to swing," he said. "I'm glad they understand it might take a little time and aren't pushing me to come back too fast."

Signed, sealed: All remaining unsigned Dodgers came to terms and the club did not unilaterally renew anyone.

Player found: The Dodgers held an open tryout Thursday. After 75 attendees were whittled down to 25 players for a simulated game, 19-year-old Venezuelan shortstop Charlie Mirabal was signed to a contract and will report to Dodgertown on Friday.

Grab a book: Current Dodgers Randy Wolf, Rafael Furcal and Loney read to local schoolchildren Friday morning as part of the National Education Association's 10th annual Read Across America program. In Los Angeles, former Dodgers Al Downing, Wes Parker, Bobby Castillo, Ken Landreaux and Joe Moeller were guest readers in the program, which was sponsored by The Dodgers Dream Foundation and the California Teachers Association for the second consecutive year.

Coming up: The Dodgers travel to Port St. Lucie on Saturday to face the Mets, with Brad Penny and Hong-Chih Kuo opposing Mike Pelfrey.

Thoughts on the season so far

-Luis Gonzalez has been surprisingly good, too good actually.  I expect him to hit like .800-.825 OPS, something an average LF can bring you.  Obviously the downside is that he stinks it up due to age like Steve Finley

-Juan Pierre has been unsurprisingly bad, too bad lol.  This guy is an average player at best, what he's doing right now is what we should expect from him for the season.  Weak slap hits that barely pass the infield, and weak blooping hits to the gaps in the outfield.  If teams would actually put a Pierre Shift on him, he probably won't even hit .250 in the season.  (A Pierre shift would be 5 infielders and 2 outfielders in the gaps)

-Pitching has been amazing, our obvious strength coming into the season.  Except for that ex-SF pitcher...    Colletti saw this guy pitch when he was in SF, he should have know that he's been losing velocity in his FB for two years straight, and last night it was a complete downfall.

-Andre Ethier did amazing last season, the doubts on him was that at best he would be a solid corner OF, 15-20 HRs 60 RBIs .270 BA type of player.  Basically what Gonzalez will provide but at a fraction of the cost.  He's not the superstar people expect him to be after his amazing rookie season.

-Wilson Betemit, geez he's been lost ever since he put on a Dodger uniform.  Bad stats as a Dodger in 2006, bad stats in winterball, bad stats in spring training, and bad stats so far in 2007.  I'm willing to see him get more AB's, at least two months of it to see if snaps out of it.  He can provide some huge power, the potential is there.

-The lineup should look like this
1. Furcal
2. Martin
3. Nomar
4. Kent
5. Gonzo
6. Ethier
7. Betemit
8. Pierre

-Olmedo Saenz should be getting starts over Ramon Martinez and Wilson Valdez...we need power not speedy slap hitters in the lineup

I think Ethier should get more playing time. He earned that from his play last year. Especially now that Kemp is on the DL. It's hard to break out of a slump when you're not getting at bats. He should be playing everyday against lefties and righties.

We won another series! We've won three of the first four series we've played. And the three series' we've won have been against division rival. Ethier had a good game, with a home run. I think all he needs is playing time. I like our chances this year. We have the pitching and we could manufacture runs.

Fuck manufacturing runs, this team needs to get that OBP high and be lucky again with runners in scoring position.  That's the real reason we were able to score runs last year, not because of stealing bases, hit and runs etc

^ It's still early in the season, but I say yes. Our pitching improved we have more depth. We have a good, solid bullpen. And like I said before, we can manufacture  runs. I don't care how we score them as long as we do.

It all depends on how much better the young guys get, and later on in the season how many other of our top young players get called up.  As of right now, our offense is worse than last year but our pitching is better.

Remember these names, any of these players can become a break out star and really take the Dodgers to consistent World Series contenders...

- Chad Billingsley Starting Pitcher
- Russell Martin Catcher
- Matt Kemp Outfielder
- Andre Ethier Outfielder
- Andy La Roche Outfielder
- Scott Elbert Starting Pitcher
- Clayton Kershaw

I really feel that once we get into the 2008 season and beyond, we're going to be a true powerhouse.
Title: Re: Sticky: The Official Los Angeles Dodgers Thread
Post by: rik on April 16, 2007, 12:20:07 PM
^ You don't think we can contend right now? I sure as hell do. IMO Russel Martin is for real, Ethier still needs to prove himself but I believe that he'll be a solid player, and I think Matt Kemp is going to be a very good power hitter for us.

I thought La Roche was a third basemen.

Post by: Javier on April 16, 2007, 12:27:52 PM
Nah we can but we'll be the same as every other NL team, if we do make it far it will be because the NL sucks so bad.  Basically luck, I'm expecting a power house team...100+ wins  every year with these young guys.  Yeah mental mistake on the La Roche comment lol, he is playing OF though.  Ethier and Kemp can be good this year, but what I'm expecting from Kemp is super star status.  Up there with David Wright, Miguel Cabrera, etc.  If we end up developing these players that good, we will be a 100+ dominating team, no doubt about it.  I'm tired of seeing the Dodgers  being the richest team in the NL West, and they struggle to get into the playoffs.  These times should be over with our farm system and money.

Notes: Schmidt to disabled list
Right-hander has inflammation of the shoulder bursa sac

PHOENIX -- The radar gun said Jason Schmidt was hurt and Monday's MRI confirmed it, inflammation of the shoulder bursa sac putting the Dodgers' pitcher on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

Trainer Stan Conte, describing the bursitis as "mild to moderate," said there was no timetable for Schmidt's return.

The club replaced Schmidt on the roster by recalling Chin-hui Tsao for the second time in a week, but manager Grady Little wouldn't commit to naming Mark Hendrickson to replace Schmidt on the mound Thursday in Coors Field, because he wasn't sure he wouldn't need Hendrickson to pitch Wednesday night, Coors Field being Coors Field.

"The game [Wednesday] will dictate what we're going to do," said Little, who noted that Tsao saved two games in his brief return to Triple-A Las Vegas.

As for Schmidt, he was signed to a three-year, $47 million contract by the Dodgers to bolster the starting rotation. The Giants, his previous club, passed on retaining Schmidt, presumably because of concerns about his health. But shortly after hiring Conte, Schmidt's previous trainer, the Dodgers landed the 34-year-old right-hander.

Throughout Spring Training, scouts were reporting that Schmidt's fastball velocity was dramatically reduced and that continued through his two-inning start Saturday night, when he was charged with five earned runs, hitting 82 mph in the first inning and never surpassing 87 mph. He is 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA, having allowed 17 hits in 11 innings.

"The last game really bought it to light," said Schmidt. "I stopped getting results. It wasn't free and easy. I was aware something was going on, but I'm the kind who just wants to go out there, and it will resolve itself. I wouldn't say I'm worried. It's a bump in the road. I try to take it day by day."

Schmidt said he tried to pitch through it, believing his velocity would gradually return, but conceded that when videos did not reveal a significant mechanical flaw, that set in motion management's increasing suspicion that something else was wrong. He said he accepted being disabled reluctantly.

"In a strange sort of way, I have to be in agreement with it if there's a light at the end of the tunnel and I come out of this and can do what I do best, instead of having to try to be pinpoint all the time, which is what I have been doing," said Schmidt. "The last game was kind of an eye-opener. It's been a long time since I had a game like that. If they can do some things that can get me over this, I have to be in agreement with it."

Conte said Schmidt mentioned some discomfort after that game and the following day, after prodding by Conte, and confirmed that he had trouble warming up Saturday and agreed to undergo the Monday MRI. Schmidt's elbow was also checked, but nothing was found. Schmidt had shoulder labrum surgery in 2000 and surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his elbow in 2003.

"We think this is new," said Conte. "It's what a lot of pitchers get. I don't get caught up in velocity drops, but this was significant and I felt we had to rule out medical problems causing it. We saw what everybody saw. His velocity was not the same as last year."

Schmidt has been shut down for several days to allow the inflammation to clear. He is on medication and his rehabilitation will include strengthening exercises before he resumes throwing. Whether the inflammation is the cause of the loss of velocity -- or a byproduct of some other problem not yet identified -- remains to be seen.

"I think this is something we can handle," Conte said when asked if the injury was serious, "but pitchers' shoulders are not easy to predict."

More medical updates: Hong-Chih Kuo threw an effective bullpen session Tuesday and is scheduled for a simulated game Friday when the club returns home. If all goes well Friday, Kuo is expected to be sent on a Minor League injury rehabilitation assignment.

Perhaps he will join outfielder Matt Kemp, who will join Triple-A Las Vegas on a rehab assignment Wednesday. Kemp is eligible to come off the disabled list April 25 after suffering a slight shoulder separation slamming into the fence at Dodger Stadium during the home opener.

Kemp said he can swing with no restrictions, although his shoulder is still a little tender throwing. He will return to action gradually in Las Vegas, but is likely to be ready by the 25th.

Yhency Brazoban made an impressive first injury rehabilitation appearance for Class A San Bernardino on Tuesday night, retiring the side in order with a strikeout, one day short of exactly one year after undergoing Tommy John elbow reconstruction.

Brazoban, who pitched only the first inning against High Desert, has been setback-free and is a little ahead of schedule in the Dodgers' expectations for his return.

Pierrre's Pack: Center fielder Juan Pierre will host kids from South L.A.'s Blazer Youth Center and give them a special experience at a Dodgers game as part of Pierre's Pack, a season-long initiative that will host 40 different kids from the inner-city youth center at five separate games. Pierre's Pack from the Blazer Youth Center will get to meet and watch Pierre at batting practice on a game day. Photo opportunities with the Dodger center fielder also will be part of the kids' meet and greet. In addition, Pierre's Pack will be given tickets to the game that follows and a meal voucher courtesy of Panda Express.

"This program is very important to me because I really want to give inner-city kids, who might not otherwise have the chance, an opportunity to come out to a big-league ball game," said Pierre. "Hopefully they'll come out and spend some time on the field and it will spark their interest in playing baseball."

Blazer Youth Center will bring the first of Pierre's Pack to the Dodgers game Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates at 7:10 p.m. PT.

Coming up: The Dodgers open a two-game set at Coors Field against Colorado on Wednesday night, with Derek Lowe (2-1, 3.79) opposing Rodrigo Lopez (1-0, 1.38). Lowe is 5-2 with a 4.50 career ERA against Colorado and was 2-2 with a 5.17 ERA against the Rockies last year.

Pierre's positive aspects of his game
- Good BA
- Has speed
- Durable (could be seen as negative)

Pierre's negative aspects of his game
- No patience
- Doesn't get a good job on pitchers, which gives him a 74% SB Success Rate.  Not good for somebody with his speed
- Weak arm
- Has trouble playing defense

Don't we have scouts that looked at Pierre?  Scouts should see a problem with him, and so do the stats except for BA and Runs.  It's just one of the worst long term FA signings in recent Dodger history.

Giants fans need to be pissed at their management, no chance they will be able to survive on their young pitching alone.  Ask the Dodgers of 2003, and see how they think about that idea.  The NL West will be a battle between AZ, LA and SD for years to come, the Giants are done until they reshape that team.

Dodgers call up LaRoche from Vegas

ATLANTA -- Looking desperately for help at third base, the Dodgers announced on Sunday the promotion of Andy LaRoche from Triple-A Las Vegas and made room for him by placing Marlon Anderson on the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow.

LaRoche wasn't exactly tearing up the Pacific Coast League with a .235 average and three home runs. But the Dodgers have been starting Wilson Betemit for most of this season and he is hitting .140 with only one home run, which he hit Saturday night as a pinch-hitter.

LaRoche, 23, was given a chance to contend for a roster spot in Spring Training, but batted only .175 with no homers and one RBI. He was promoted over Tony Abreu, who is hitting .357 and has begun playing third base.

Anderson spent most of the spring sidelined with the lingering effects of off-season elbow surgery. He was 4-for-22 this year with no RBIs batting almost exclusively as a left-handed pinch-hitter.

The moves leave the switch-hitting Betemit as the lone left-handed hitter on the bench for the Dodgers.

Notes: Dodgers shift Abreu to third
Middle infielder trying out new position in Minor Leagues
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

MIAMI -- The Dodgers promoted Andy LaRoche in hopes that he can help with the third-base crisis, but considering LaRoche was struggling at Triple-A, it will take more convincing than a double in his Sunday debut.

In the meantime, management apparently has decided to move talented middle infielder Tony Abreu to third base. Abreu had been playing second base, shortstop and third base (when LaRoche was playing left field), but he's been at third exclusively in the three games since LaRoche left. Veteran Minor League middle infielder Luis Maza was promoted from Double-A to take over second base.

Abreu went 2-for-5 Monday with a double, raising his average to .360 after hitting .340 in Spring Training, and he has some company in the Las Vegas clubhouse wondering what the secret formula is that gets a player to the Major Leagues. Outfielder Larry Bigbie, for example, is hitting .373 after hitting .357 in Spring Training. He has a June 1 escape clause and is expected to leave the organization for opportunities elsewhere.

James Loney, last year's Triple-A batting champ who couldn't make the club off a .414 spring average because Nomar Garciaparra is the first baseman, is batting only .258, which is still better than LaRoche, who was promoted while hitting .235 after hitting .175 in Spring Training.

"I got the call because of the need at the position," said LaRoche. "Obviously, a lot of guys down there are putting up better numbers. I didn't even think about it at the time, I was just excited. I'm sure some of them wish it had been them, but nobody said anything like that, they were all happy for me. I'm sure some were a little disappointed."

LaRoche was at third base again Monday night, dropped from sixth to eighth in the batting order because Russell Martin was back in the lineup hitting sixth.

Little said he would stick with LaRoche "for two or three days to see where it takes us." He had Andre Ethier batting seventh, but said they might flip-flop depending on matchups.

LaRoche was joined in Florida by his father, Dave, a former Major League pitcher and currently the pitching coach for Toronto's Double-A New Hampshire Fishcats in the Eastern League.

Schmidt progressing: That's the daily update from Jason Schmidt, disabled since April 15 with shoulder bursitis.

"Nothing is really important until I pitch off the mound, in a game, probably a rehab start," said Schmidt, who was throwing on flat ground in the outfield with a pitching motion at about half-speed before batting practice.

Early Wolf: Little said pitching coach Rick Honeycutt was mapping out a strategy to deal with Randy Wolf's early inning struggles, which also plagued him in Philadelphia earlier in his career.

Batters are hitting .444 against Wolf in the first 30 pitches of a game this year and .225 from pitches 31-90.

Kuo, Brazoban update: Hong-Chih Kuo pitched four innings in a no-decision Monday, allowing three runs and two homers while striking out five.

Yhency Brazoban pitched a scoreless inning Sunday, but needed 26 pitches to get through it, which is not what Little wants to see. Because his starting pitchers seem no more capable of pitching deep into games than a year ago, he wants relievers who can pitch more than one inning and do it frequently.

"It might be two days before we can use him again," Little said. "I'd like for every pitcher to be able to throw multiple innings. Coming off a surgery like that [Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery], it's hard to expect more than that."

Not Miller time: Greg Miller, whose longtime shoulder problems have been replaced by major control problems, had the kind of line Sunday that indicates all is not well. In 2 2/3 innings, he was charged with six earned runs on five hits and six walks, with five strikeouts. In his previous start, he allowed six walks in three innings. Miller has allowed 28 walks in 23 1/3 innings.

Lamurra time: In addition to Maza, the Dodgers promoted left-handed reliever B.J. Lamurra from Double-A Jacksonville, and he was the winning pitcher for Las Vegas on Sunday. Lamurra was acquired from the White Sox last year for Sandy Alomar Jr.

No Anderson update: Little said Marlon Anderson, disabled Sunday with a sore elbow, had an MRI on Monday, but results were not yet available.

Chat with Kent: Second baseman Jeff Kent will host a live web chat on dodgers.com on Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT.

Coming up: Mark Hendrickson (2-0, 1.30) opposes Wes Obermueller (1-1, 3.07) on Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. PT

That's what I was thinking. Isn't this Kent's last year in his contract? They're probably just doing that experiment for this season.

Jason Schmidt had a very good first rehab start. he has a an ERA in the high 7's with a 1-2 record before he got hurt. I dont see him staying healthy for long the last few years with teh Giants he had got hurt too, i think hes on the downslide of his career. But we will have to wait and see the rest of the year,

exactly. thats why they didnt. LCL the new BIG 3. Lincecum, Cain, Lowry. Then Zito, thats a deadly 5. They just need a pen and one more big bat. Even jsut a better pen and they probably win the west.

It's worth the risk.  With him being healthy, we can expect great things from him.  Zito on the other hand, you can just expect him to be the Zito of the last three years.  A guy that will give you innings, at around a little bit above average.  Our other risk is working out perfectly, just like I thought he would

but fuuuuuuck what was up with tonight? we were UP 5-1, and we lost 5-6!!! Broxton walked the loosing run. wtf? SAITO where are you? broxton is clearly not ready for that closer role, gonna take couple more seasons for him to slide into that role.

fuck, Kuo was...good tonight. aside from all the ballls he threw he was pretty good. its a shame he couldnt get his first win. 8 strike outs, this guys gonna be great some day.

Notes: Loney to see playing time
Little says first baseman could regularly spell Garciaparra

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers management didn't call up James Loney and Matt Kemp over the weekend to sit on the bench.

Loney replaced Nomar Garciaparra in the lineup again at first base on Monday, meaning that Sunday's day off for Garciaparra was more than just an isolated occurrence.

Garciaparra -- who was seen before the game with Victoria Beckham, former Spice Girl and wife of soccer star David Beckham -- spent considerably more time in the batting cage. The six-time All-Star is on the bench and will stay there perhaps through this series, according to Little.

"We'll give him a little break, two and possibly three games," Little said. "It's not just physically, but mentally. Coming into the season, we said we'd try to give him a day off, and with Loney, we'll find time to do it on a more regular basis. It will be good for Nomar and good for Loney."

Of course, the only thing that really matters is what's good for the standings. If Garciaparra wasn't in a career-worst power vacuum, things would be different. But he has one home run in 231 at-bats (183 at-bats since his last). Chances are that even when he returns, it might not be in his customary No. 3 spot in the order, which is now being filled by catcher Russell Martin, who appears pretty comfortable there.

Little said he will try to rotate Tony Abreu, now the third baseman, over to second base to give 39-year-old Jeff Kent more days off. The expectation is that Kemp, who started Sunday, will see playing time giving 39-year-old left fielder Luis Gonzalez similar days off, as well as spell Juan Pierre in center field against left-handed pitching.

"Our concern isn't June and July, it's September and October," Little said, referring to Garciaparra and Kent. "We don't know the specific number [of days], but more than once every three or four weeks. It's precautionary. We'll try to do it a day or two before they're dragging."

Little was asked what he expected out of a No. 3 hitter.

"To hit with people on base and be productive up near the top of the league in RBIs," he said. "Nomar has done that for us this year very well."

Garciaparra has driven in 34 runs, second on the club to Martin's 40, and his .426 average with runners in scoring position is second in the league. But his slugging percentage of .333 is a dramatic plunge from .505 last year and .540 for an 11-year career. Does that mean Garciaparra has become a different hitter (as in, a clutch singles hitter)?

"I don't know," said Little. "It's a long season with a lot of games to go. We have a shortstop [Rafael Furcal] who at this time had maybe one home run [actually, four] and had 15 at the end of the year. Maybe I'll be better able to answer that question at the end of the season."

Garciaparra took extra batting practice with Kemp, Andre Ethier and Wilson Betemit before regular batting practice and headed down to the indoor batting cage with hitting coach Eddie Murray an hour before the game.

Meanwhile, Ethier took some fly balls in left field before the game. He played there almost exclusively last year, but has been the right fielder this year.

"They want me to be familiar with it, because with Brady Clark [designated for assignment], if Kemp is playing, they want me to be able to move over to left when they take out [Luis Gonzalez]," said Ethier. "I haven't taken a ball there since last year. Better to remember how to do it at 4 [o'clock] than at 10. They know I can play there, I just want to be comfortable."

Spotlight on Martin: By moving into the top spot in National League voting for All-Star catcher, Martin was surrounded by local media before the game.

The best comments, however, came from the Dodgers' previous All-Star catcher and current Met, Paul Lo Duca.

"He's done everything right. I wasn't as talented as Russell at his age, I didn't have the catching skills," said Lo Duca, who reached the Major Leagues at age 26, compared to 23 for Martin. "He's so polished behind the plate. Pitchers are comfortable throwing to him, he understands the game and he's an unbelievable offensive player.

"I just told him to get his rest, take your days off. He reminds me of myself, he doesn't want to take time off, neither did I. You get older, you realize it pays off."

Juggled rotation: With days off Thursday and next Monday, Little said he would juggle his starting pitchers so left-handers Randy Wolf and Hong-Chih Kuo would not pitch back-to-back.

Tsao, Brazoban updates: Chin-hui Tsao threw lightly in the outfield Monday and was pleased to report the discomfort in his shoulder was gone.

Yhency Brazoban, also disabled with shoulder problems, will have a bullpen session Tuesday.

Draft picks signing: Scouting director Tim Hallgren reported that seven of last week's picks in the First-Year Player Draft had either signed or agreed to terms. They are Erik Kanaby (10th round), Paul Koss (11th), Jessie Mier (12th), Bobby Blevins (13th), Cal Stanke (15th), Andres Santiago (16th) and Franklin Jacobs (17th).

He was confident the club's first five choices would soon agree. That would include first-rounder Chris Withrow, who will receive a bonus of about $1.35 million. The highest pick that figures to be a difficult sign is fifth-round pitcher Kyle Blair from Los Gatos High School.

On Repko's tab: Injured outfielder Jason Repko launched his personal community program on Monday. Repko hosted 10 youngsters from the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services at the game and will host others at nine more games throughout the season. The kids will meet Repko and watch batting practice from the field while also receiving Dream Team t-shirts, a baseball and a ticket to the All-You-Can-Eat Pavilion, compliments of Repko.

Coming up: Kuo (0-1, 4.85) opposes the Mets' John Maine (6-3, 2.78) Tuesday night at 7:10 p.m. PT.

Notes: Ethier flourishing under Mueller
Outfielder's average on the rise since hitting coach change
By Ken Gurnick / MLB.com

LOS ANGELES -- Since Bill Mueller took over as Dodgers hitting coach, no player has illustrated offensive improvement more dramatically than Andre Ethier.

The second-year outfielder was batting .261 with a .311 on-base percentage and .402 slugging percentage when Mueller replaced Eddie Murray on June 14. Entering Tuesday night's game, Ethier's average was up to .294, the on-base percentage to .359 and the slugging percentage to .443.

Murray, a Hall of Famer, had a laissez-faire approach to being a hitting coach, leaving it up to players to know what it takes to hit, as he did when he played. Very few players, however, are blessed with the natural hitting ability Murray had. Most must work at it tirelessly. Ethier said he needs a more proactive and personal approach, including immediate feedback on his mechanics, and he's now getting it.

"It was tough not having the kind of program I was familiar with," he said. "I had to remember what I used to do to be successful. I've had to go back to the basics. I broke down my swing with Eddie, but with Bill and Manny, we've done it a couple steps further. We're doing the one-handed drill, how I approach the ball, how I use my legs and square up the ball and get my hands in the right slot.

"That's why I think you see a lot of difference in my swing. With all due respect, I grew up with a dad who took me out and threw to me nonstop, Whiffle balls or whatever, all day long. It's not my style to sit back, take 10 minutes of batting practice and be ready to play. My dad's way was very proactive, and that's not how it was here. I need someone to see my swing and tell me what's wrong, tell me that I did it or didn't do it."

Ethier said the best hitting coach he had while coming up in the Oakland system was Von Hayes, a left-handed hitter much like Ethier. As his Double-A manager, Hayes would remind Ethier of mechanical keys from the third-base coaching box between pitches.

"I developed a rapport with him, and some people have it and some people don't," Ethier said. "Now I'm trying to get back to that mentality and frame of mind about hitting. I remember last year when we went to play Oakland, I talked to a few of their coaches and instructors there, and I got more feedback from them because they knew so much about me. When you change teams, it's tough no matter who the coach is."

Something to celebrate: While warming up for his 10th start of the season, backup catcher Mike Lieberthal couldn't help but notice the Dodger Stadium scoreboard.

In full DiamondVision size and splendor, Lieberthal was treated to a 15-minute video presentation of career highlights, the latest mock celebration of the seldom-used Lieberthal.

"My last start [on July 3] was balloons and flowers, so this start, they put my highlight video up there," Lieberthal said, rolling his eyes. "I suspect it's Luis Gonzalez. He was behind the flowers. He said it wasn't, so I don't know who it was this time."

Lieberthal also questioned teammate Randy Wolf.

"Nope," Wolf said. "I was blamed for it right away, but it wasn't me. I'd take credit for something like that. I'd be nice to Lieby."

Lieberthal figures the perpetrator got an assist from Phillies video coordinator Kevin Camiscioli, who likely supplied the highlights, and Lieberthal figured the show was enjoyed by many of his former Phillies teammates. He knows his Dodgers mates enjoyed it, as they "clapped when I hit home runs and made good plays," he said.

All that's left is to wonder what's in store for his next start.

"This is going to be really tough to top," Lieberthal said.

Martin rests, and that's an order: Lieberthal took over for Russell Martin, who will catch Wednesday's day game. Manager Grady Little forbade Martin from even coming out of the clubhouse during batting practice.

"You try to give him a day off, and the next thing you know he's out there at shortstop turning double plays," said Little. "I told him I didn't want to see him out here."

Run the bases like Pierre: Dodgers center fielder Juan Pierre entered Tuesday night's game with 38 stolen bases and is on pace to finish the season with a career-high 66, which would be the most for a Dodger since Davey Lopes led the league with 77 in 1975. Lopes is in town as Phillies first-base coach.

At the corners: Little said he's pleased with the way his corner infielders are handling their positions. He said first baseman James Loney "has a chance to win a Gold Glove before it's over," and third baseman Nomar Garciaparra has "made every play he's had to make."

On Garciaparra, Little wanted to add this: "If the day comes when he couldn't play baseball anymore, he could work out a week or two and play with David Beckham in another sport [soccer], that's the type of athlete the guy is."

Injury update: Wolf said his shoulder continues to improve and he hopes to be throwing off a mound by Friday or Saturday. He's been out since July 3 and will likely need another two weeks of bullpen sessions and live action before he will be activated. Little indicated Wolf is more likely to need a rehabilitation assignment the longer he's out, meaning he will likely spend a month on the sidelines.

Las Vegas update: Roberto Hernandez, likely candidate to be the 12th pitcher when the Dodgers add one, allowed one hit in a six-pitch scoreless inning in his Triple-A Las Vegas debut on Monday night, then he went back to the bullpen and made another 20 throws.

Coming up: In Wednesday's 12:10 p.m. series finale at Dodger Stadium, Chad Billingsley (6-0, 3.26 ERA) opposes the Phillies Kyle Kendrick (3-0, 4.40).

yes that's what will get us over. brad penny is a monster. plus our core hitters have been coming through.

Post by: J.D. Wykid, Esq. on March 20, 2008, 12:37:59 AM
yeah he got hurt..AGAIN...he got hit by a pitch on his right wrist a few weeks ago, at first the xrays came back negative, but now it turns out he has a hairline fracture...a new report on dodgers.com says that he might be able to swing the bat this weekend...but its not looking too good.  and with andy laroche out for a few months, 3B is looking real shaky..again.

however, we have a youngster who is doing pretty good in spring training, his name is Blake DeWitt...he has the chance of a lifetime right now...he is doing a good job with the bat and the glove...and remember, Russell Martin came up because all of our catchers were hurt...maybe dewitt is our answer to our fucked 3B situation since Beltre left...

kemp should hit at least .295, 25ish HR with something like 90 RBI...Bills should win around 16 or 17 with an ERA around 3.30ish...these are my realistic expectations of these two guys..

i got them both in the dubcc league. 8) 8)

Title: Motherdfucking Andre 'Dr. Dre' Ethier...
Post by: J.D. Wykid, Esq. on March 30, 2008, 02:46:21 PM
FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!  Torre made the RIGHT choice!!!!  Ethier (LF), Jones (CF), and Kemp (RF) is the BEST OF we could have, and im glad Torre saw the light!!!!!

The Doctor of Hitting, Andre 'Dr. Dre' Ethier!!!!

 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

LOS ANGELES -- Andre Ethier won the Dodgers' starting left-field job from veteran Juan Pierre and will start Opening Day vs. the Giants on Monday, Los Angeles manager Joe Torre announced Sunday.

"I just feel I want to start that way and see," said Torre. "He had an outstanding spring. Sometimes you don't make enough of Spring Training, sometimes you make too much of it. I'm curious. I want to see more. He's had a number of home runs, he's hit off left-handers and right-handers."

Torre said the 30-year-old Pierre, in the second year of a five-year, $44 million contract, was disappointed.

"He's a professional," Torre said of Pierre, who was displaced from center field by the signing of Andruw Jones. "Before it's all said and done, he'll be contributing. I wouldn't want anybody on the bench accepting of it."

Torre said Pierre would start the season as a bench player pinch-hitting, pinch-running and being available to spell a starter. Jones, for example, reported a leg cramp Sunday.

"I'm starting the season this way," Torre stressed. "I have a feeling, I'd like to believe there will be playing time for everyone to contribute and keep sharp."

Pierre had a disastrous spring offensively, hitting .169 with six stolen bases in 24 games. Ethier, 25, hit .365 with six homers and 16 RBIs. Right fielder Matt Kemp, 25, hit .307 with a team-high 18 RBIs.

General manager Ned Colletti, who signed Pierre, downplayed the significance of Torre's decision.

"Is he a bench player or is he not starting tomorrow?" Colletti asked. "It's a long season. You've got to compete, you've got to play. I understand the build-up to Opening Day. But you look at a lot of Opening Day rosters and there are players you can't even recognize. It changes day by day."

when brad penny pitches in the day, he puts up fifth starter numbers...and when he pitches against the mets he pitches like loaiza usually does!  add those two factors together and we loose 1-12.  :(

we gon' take out our frustrations on the astros tomorrow, though...fuck yeah we will!!

real shit man.  :bandit:

yet another win for the wrecking machine. a sweep to start our lil 7 game road trip.  :bandit:

what hypes me up is we have Manny, Kuroda, and Kuo missing. Wade isnt the same from last year, most of our bullpen is SHIT...and we're STILL the best team in baseball.

kuroda is gonna come back next week, so our rotation will get stronger.  and many is a bit more a month away from returning.  even jason schmidt is pitching well in his rehab assignment!  our present is looking AMAZING, but what he have in store for the future is what hypes me up.

this isnt the best team we can put out there...and once we get the best we have out there...then OOOOWWWWEEEE! :bandit:

Joe Torre apparently has never heard of the double switch

One thing that has been really bothering me ever since Joe Torre took over as manager of the Dodgers last year is that he basically never ever uses the double switch.

A perfect example was tonight’s game on the road against the Chicago Cubs.  In a very tight game with the Dodgers leading 2-1, Torre yanked starter Randy Wolf after he allowed a leadoff homer to start the eighth, and brought in relief ace Ramon Troncoso.

With closer Jonathan Broxton having thrown a ton of pitches the day before, Torre was obviously hoping that his second-best reliever Troncoso would be able to go two innings for the save (which was why he had even allowed starter Wolf to come out for the eighth).

But the pitcher’s spot was also due to bat 5th in the top of the ninth.  This meant that there was absolutely no reason not to make a double switch, because if the pitcher’s spot came up in the 9th, it would almost certainly mean there were runners on base and in scoring position, and in a one-run ball game you would certainly not want to have to bat a relief pitcher in a situation where runs were definitely needed.

But sure enough, as he has done ever since he returned to the National League, Torre did not make a double switch of any kind, and sure enough Troncoso made it through the 8th just fine, and sure enough the Dodgers got something going in the 9th, and sure enough Torre sent a relief pitcher up to bat with two runners on base and two outs, and Troncoso struck out swinging to end any chance of scoring further insurance runs.

Now, Troncoso was able to close out the Cubs in the bottom of the 9th for the save, but that is almost besides the point, because he did so in spite of some flat-out TERRIBLE managing by Torre.

There was absolutely no excuse not to make a double switch in the 8th inning, as the game was almost over, Torre was *clearly* planning to go with Troncoso for two innings, and he had his entire bench available.  Torre clearly never even considered it, however, nor did any of the Dodger coaches suggest it.

An artfully executed double switch is not only one of the most beautiful strategic maneuvers in baseball (and one of the main reasons why the DH is an abomination), but it is also a crucial tool in an NL manager’s toolbox to ensure that he maximizes his teams ability to score runs and his own ability to get more innings out of his best pitchers.

I’m not sure if Torre just spend too long in the AL, is getting too old, or if he never used the double switch, even back when he managed in the NL before, but it is shocking and simply unacceptable how many times this season (and last year as well) he found himself having to send a reliever to the plate just to keep him in the game, or found himself having to pinch hit for a reliever who was pitching really well, when these problems could have easily been avoided with a simple double switch.

But Joe Torre never makes double switches.

CHICAGO -- It is true that you win nothing for having baseball's best record as May draws to a close. But in the case of the Los Angeles Dodgers, they are on top by merit. The only reasonable forecast for them is for continued success.

They are first in the National League in runs scored, second in team ERA, third in fewest errors committed. The spectrum of baseball activities has been covered; the Dodgers are all right everywhere.

A 2-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday kept them from being a .700 ballclub at the 50-game mark. But being a .680 ballclub seems much better than a consolation prize, particularly when the Dodgers' lead in the NL West approaches double digits. It is distinctly possible that the Dodgers will not continue through September on their current 110-victory pace. But there is no reason to expect that they will finish the 2009 season as anything other than one of baseball's elite teams.

And in a way, their season to date has been even better than the record suggests. The 50-game suspension of Manny Ramirez was supposed to severely damage this team. It hasn't done much harm so far. The Dodgers are 13-8 since the suspension started. Their young and talented players have continued to improve. Their veterans are providing leadership and stability.

And it hasn't hurt that Juan Pierre took over in left field and has hit .411, with extra-base pop, since Ramirez departed. Now, with Pierre and Rafael Furcal and Orlando Hudson, the Dodgers have additional, enviable offensive components, greater ability to manufacture runs with small ball and speed. Last year at this time, the Dodgers were struggling to score runs. Now, even without Ramirez, the Dodgers have a lineup that is prototypically strong.

"These are usually the prerequisites for putting a lineup together -- speed at the top of the lineup, power in the middle of the lineup and contact at the back end of the lineup," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "I think that's the way you put a Major League lineup together. That's the way you put any lineup together. And the Dodgers are fortunate that they have those ingredients."

For Dodgers manager Joe Torre, this sort of diversified offense was always a goal.

"The thing that I'm probably proudest about on this road trip is we won three games in Colorado and we don't hit a home run," Torre said on Friday. "For me, that's great, because that's all we talk about this year is: 'Think small. If you think small, big things will happen.' I always preached that with the Yankees, it's something that I've always been a believer in.

"When we got Furcal back, and then we were able to sign Hudson, that to me was automatic, one-two at the top of the batting order, two switch-hitters, two guys with speed, two guys, sort of pesky-type players," Torre said.

"And then there was Manny hitting third. I got a lot of questions about 'who's going to protect Manny?' Well, I think you protect Manny by getting men on base in front of him because then they have to pitch to him. And then when Manny went down, Juan Pierre, who we had hit ninth in a number of games, because we felt it was more advantageous for him to hit ninth than eighth, he caught on fire."

The Dodgers' tangible abilities are self-evident in their individual and collective performances. Their core of young talent, both at the everyday positions and on the pitching staff, is in place and indisputable. Other clubs have hopes for the future. The Dodgers already have assembled much of the future's cast. But to persevere over even one six-month season, a team must also have intangible strengths. The Dodgers are probably set up very well in this category, as well.

"I sensed in Spring Training that this ballclub was having a lot of fun, it had a whole different personality, and that was even before we had Manny again," Torre said. "There was no question that the way we finished up last year, beating the Cubs [in a Division Series], they were the best club in the National League, it did a lot for our confidence, our self-esteem.

"I think the additions of [Mark] Loretta and [Brad] Ausmus, aside from their ability and their ability to come off the bench, their personalities in the clubhouse, their professionalism really helps keep this club together."

Last season, Torre's first in Los Angeles, had to be a work in progress. The Dodgers had talent and Torre had a splendid managerial reputation. But everybody involved had to become more than casual acquaintances.

"I think we have young players that are growing," Torre said. "But I think they've had a little help along the way, Manny being part of that. I think Casey Blake has helped these guys understand what that growth is. I think last year we came on board, and we had a bunch of young players here that knew they were talented, but I don't think they knew for sure what that meant.

"Their work ethic, it's not that they didn't work before, but I'm not sure they really knew exactly what the process was. Again, probably because they were highly touted coming out of the Minor Leagues, a lot of times young players when they get to the big leagues say: 'OK, I've done it.' But that's when the work starts.

"I'm not sure they necessarily believed what we were saying to them last year, even though they were very respectful. But I had just come on board. You know, trust is something you have to earn. I think it's a two-way street, as far as my trusting them, and them trusting what we were trying to do."

It is far too early for congratulations. But it is not too early to notice how superbly the 2009 Dodgers have played, and how bright their future appears.

Yeah Lidge set the table for LA and then Pedro helped blow it and the Dodgers came through and took advantage.  Dodgers stay rolling.  Giants are starting to win on the road and we are only 2 games back of the wild card but the division seems to be out of reach.

Yeah I am thrilled with the 28-25 start, I just hope we can keep it up but our lineup really makes things difficult lol.  We play great at home and struggle on the road but right now were off to a 3-1 start on this road trip, we have to take care of the Marlins again.

not that i'm a Dodgers fan but I feel bad for Grienke and the Dodgers....a potential 2 month injury that never should have happened.  Luckily for Dodger fans ya'll still got Clayton Kershaw and a decent line-up which will be better once Hanley is healthy

that outfield is dangerous when Crawford is healthy.

I don't wanna sound like some dodger homer but that incident is another reason that the madres should be contracted.  Waste of life franchise.  But that would make good sense & nobody on earth hell wants 2 do that.  I doubt Peter O'Malley will turn them around.  Too bad there wasn't somebody who would buy it so they can move it to vegas or even change the name.  Franchise who deserves to be moved.  When you think padres, you think loser franchise, never amount to anything.  The apologists love to say its a bad history but at lest we have a history, its our history  ::)  Change the name to something beach or armed forces related, colors, change the culture there change everything.  Whenever you hear something about that franchise its just bad.  Some bars & restaurants change their name to make things better, the padres should do the same thing.  Or rebuild parts of petco park to where it can be a new football stadium since the chargers are too stupid to think of renovating Jack Murphy Stadium.

i'd suggest both florida teams be contracted first...both are a waste of great talent (Price, Longoria, Stanton etc.) and the fans don't even show up when the team is in first place.

Amen!  But another idiot bush fucked things up.  Jeb threatened to sue mlb if they took the florida teams away.  Then why don't he & the people in that state support them win or lose?  Every florida mlb fan that's on the internet happens to like both the rays & marlins.  T.bay fans say that the economy is terrible there, could be right.  1997 I knew that the marlins would at least be a wildcard team but the fans didn't show up for them until they got to the world series.

Personally I don't care about this thread, but I guess I would like to see the official MLB thread (if we've got one) get stickied.
There are quite a few MLB heads on here and I figure it'd be a lot better than having a bunch of threads focused on different topics (someone's extention, someone's injury etc...) that get like 1 or 2 replies at most and fade away.

That's just my 2 cents though.

we have an official mlb thread....if the posting stays consistent in that one, i'll sticky it..gota peep it out. but i dont like the idea of not starting other mlb related threads. peeps come into threads for the headlines, if we kept every post in the official thread of that sport, there'd be no forum.

But isn't that the role those threads are supposed to have? What good is an official thread if topics that should be discussed in there are just going to be made into separate threads? I'm guessing threads like the professional wrestling thread and NHL thread have suffered from this in times past.

But I digress. I'll await the final verdict by you and the other mods.

I can agree with this. I think that because Southern California area is split with the IE divided and OC going for the Angels and LA going for the Dodgers, it's hard to have a straight Dodgers thread. The Lakers run OC, IE and LA, so they will get more support here. But an MLB thread should handle everything.

they're mostly for casual discussion and are used as game-threads during live action, speculation, rumors etc......but headlines can can still be made into threads. the board would be dead otherwise.

It also amazes me that this forum actually had more than 4 Dodgers fans, a Giants fan and a Braves fan on here.

So this thread hasn't been used in over a year, including all of last year during a playoff run. So should we sticky it?

I know that standings don't matter until late August, but how's the Dodgers doing in the NL West?

Are they the NL equivalent of the Tigers where there's only one slum dunk contender in their division or are they going to be duking shit out with the Giants?

Giants have a very underrated roster. They inexplicably underachieved last year but that year was an anomaly, definitely not to be expected in years to come.

So I'm guessing that the NL West will go to either the Dodgers and Giants then.

How's Dee Gorden been recently? I predicted that he'd crash and burn by late-June/early-July.

There definitely is no crash and burn but it is definitely a slow decline. He was playing like a God to start the season so it was to be expected. Now he's just going to be a solid 2B (hopefully it doesn't get worse than that). His stats are still good though, and sabermetrics paint him in a very positive light.
