Below Zero Exclusive on Lil Flip - By : Jonathan - March 31, 2009

Over the past month, rap group Below Zero has been featured all over mass urban media sites for their song "New Era" (coincidentally, they also have an endorsement deal with New Era - the renowned headwear manufacturing company). However, there's an interesting back story to this song. A while back, the multi-platinum rap artist, Lil Flip, was involved with the song but was later removed due to industry politics. So Dubcnn caught up with Below Zero to get the 411...
DUBCNN EXCLUSIVE: BELOW ZERO STATEMENT ON LIL FLIP
"The song "New Era" was written by Below Zero and produced by Skinny Beck, Joel Hopper, and Breadman. At the time we recorded the song, we were in a joint venture deal with Kingpin Ent. Group out of New York, owned by Sandy Lal (Sandy is Lil Flip’s lawyer and manager). Sandy loved the recording and wanted to put Flip on it because he thought having an established artist on the record would help with radio and breaking the record.
As it turns out, a lot of DJ's and radio stations didn’t want to touch the record because they felt Flip wasn’t hot anymore. And, at the time, he was leaving one label and going to another, and the label [he left behind] flexed their muscles and damn near black-balled Lil Flip.
This is when we, as a group, learned that this is a ‘what have you done for me lately?’ type business.
People thought Below Zero was affiliated with Lil Flip and Clover G and wanted us to take sides in his beef with TI. We expressed that this wasn’t our beef and we had nothing to do with it but, eventually, we had to make a business decision to take Flip off the record and move in another direction for our career.
That is the reason why he isn’t in the "New Era" video and is no longer on the radio version – don’t get us wrong, Flip is a cool ass dude. He done the verse on love and we have toured together and was real cool and always shouted out during his set. But, ultimately, we had to make the best decision for our career."

.......................................................................................... Download: U-N-I - "A Love Supreme" - By : LilJay - March 31, 2009

The anticipated debut album "A Love Supreme" by the Inglewood duo U-N-I is finally here. If you heard their this-is-only-a-mixtape "Before There Was Love", you knew they weren't playing and aiming for even bigger things on their first album.
"A Love Supreme" didn't disappoint at all. It's a very strong debut and easily their most polished and well-rounded project to date. Y-O's and Thurzday's rhymes about the everyday life in Inglewood combined with Ro Blvd's universal production is what sets them apart from most records coming out these days. Music like this is what Hip-Hop needs right now, I'm sure any listener can appreciate this. And the best of it all, it's available for free download!
Hit the link below to get your copy of "A Love Supreme". Also, be sure to leave feedback on our forums once you've heard it.

.......................................................................................... Scan Pulls No Punches On "F-ck The Westcoast" - By : Rud - March 30, 2009

January was the last time we heard from Scan, the artist we have been reporting on regularly since his 2005 debut album; "The Passion."
Since that debut he has successfully released the Ground Up Entertainment mixtape entitled Ground Up Live and then in 2007 a mixtape called Loud & Clear both of which were made avaialble for free download right here on Dubcnn.
In our January update we told you that Scan is about to release a single that is sure to raise eyebrows with the title "F-ck The Westcoast." The cover can be seen in the news image and you can see the back cover of his new mixtape "Reality Check" with DJ Fingaz here. In the last update we released a track called For The Love but have since not come back with the promised single. Today we have that single for stream and download below.
Scan - F-ck The Westcoast
We want you to judge and comment on the track via our forums however Scan told us that although some might disagree with the words, this track addresses "attitudes and politics on the West Coast" and highlights what he says is the decline of "fan support for up and coming independent rappers on the Westcoast." Scan has never bitten his tongue and never will so expect this to strike a chord.
Ground Up Entertainment CEO Donald Johnson told Dubcnn; "The politics on the Westcoast is not like the East coast or Down South. If you not attached to certain people on the Westcoast you not going to go anywhere. There has been many great rappers that dropped from the Coast that got disregarded because Snoop or Dre is not pushing them or not affilated in any way with him or her. They might buzz for a minute but it dies quickly. Scan's new album 'The Message' will not only be a Westcoast Classic but the album will be a Hip-Hop Classic"
We also just got word that Scan and Da Riffs were in the studio this past weekend and have started work on a mixtape. This will come out after two releases that are due for release in April - the DJ Fingaz presented "Reality Check" and the Scan and LeMarvin collaboration "No Pain, No Gain."Discuss This Topic

.......................................................................................... Goldie Loc Gearing Up To Release "Rebirth of the Eastsida" - By : LilJay - March 23, 2009

It's already been over a year since we first broke the news about Goldie Loc's new solo project "Rebirth of the Eastsida" (see: Goldie Loc Returns With "Tha Eastsida Rebirth" Album). The album obviously still hasn't come out yet, but the Long Beach rapper kept on pushing for the Coast by doing songs with The Warzone and joining Snoop Dogg on the West Fest tour last summer. He is now finally gearing up to release the album and he has reached out to Dubcnn to share some new information about his situation. "I'm knocking out my parts now and then get the features going. I'm trying to get this out by summertime, so everyone has some summer music and some going back to school music. So the "Rebirth of the Eastsida" is definitely coming" Goldie Loc told Dubcnn. Judging from the previews, you can expect some of the best music that you've heard from the Loc in the last few years. We'll have some music from the album available soon here on Dubcnn.
Until then you can check out this new track we have for you today called "Sonshine". It features Quazedelic and G-Money with a beat provided by 19-year old producer Anthem. G-Money and Anthem are both signed to Goldie Loc's label Slumperville Music. "Sonshine" is about dealing with the situation when their baby moms try to take their sons away from them. Even though it's just a leftover and not planned to be featured on any future projects, there's no point in leaving it unheard as I'm sure some people will relate to this. Goldie Loc - Sonshine Feat. Quazedelic & G-Money (Prod. by Anthem) In related news, as a little bonus we have one of many unreleased songs that Quazedelic has sitting in his vaults waiting to be heard. This is a track from 2004 that Quaze produced for Redman and Method Man called "Wait A Minute". It's taken from the upcoming project "The Resume" by The Soundscannerz (Quazedelic and Josef Leimberg), which we reported on numerous times. Quaze also has his long-awaited solo album coming out this summer called "The Arrival". More on that project soon! Redman & Method Man - Wait A Minute (Prod. by Quazedelic)Discuss This Topic

.......................................................................................... Crooked I & King Tech Unite For "If You Ever Hear Me" - By : Rud - March 23, 2009

Crooked I ensures he is always in the news with his ability to keep creating new music and getting it out to the streets and online. Recently much of the news has been about the shooting incident a few weeks ago, but the Long Beach MC got back to the music last week with the release of the brand new cut produced by Komplex.
That track is the first leak from his upcoming and long overdue debut album "B.O.S.S." which is now to be available for free download. I'm leaking this song first just to give them a sneak preview of what "B.O.S.S." is gonna sound like" Crooked I exclusively told Dubcnn.
Since then a half finished version of another track leaked on some blogs and forums entitled "If You Ever Hear Me." Today we have the full version of the new track that is produced by King Tech and will be featured on a new release but not on "B.O.S.S."
Readers who read the last update will already know that Crooked I and the Wake Up Show's King Tech have been in the studio as he told us; "We made some crazy records. We made 7 songs in one day." he said. "I think that's my new direction, the sound is totally different. It's the same quality music, but tomorrow's not promised, so I wanna express myself to the fullest now. If it's a whole song about the bullshit going on in the hood or a relative that passed away, whatever it is, I just wanna express all my feelings."

.......................................................................................... Locksmith Is Back As "Frank the Rabbit" - By : LilJay - March 23, 2009

As we reported a few weeks ago, Locksmith & E-A Ski are ready to shake up the Bay Area again. While Ski is about to blow up his I.M.G.M.I. imprint (see: E-A Ski & Locksmith Return With New Video), Locksmith is testing his mettle with a solo career. While putting the finishing touches on his debut LP "Frank the Rabbit", Locksmith is releasing the single "Therapudic" which is already making its rounds on mixshows and getting regular spins on KMEL and Sacramento's KBMB.
The Richmond-born emcee hasn't lost his trademark raw lyricism, precise delivery, or stinging critiques of the status quo. Whether it be industry games or governmental corruption, Lock calls it how he sees it on the new track. With his lyrical prowess over super-producer E-A-Ski's lean, menacing beats, Locksmith transcends all Hip-Hop boundaries.
From his studio in Oakland, Lock expresses his excitement about his solo release and claims that "Frank the Rabbit", which features Royce the 5'9, Jake One, Left of the Frontline and E-A-Ski, might surprise heads.
"Sonically, it's very different from what I've done in the past" Locksmith adds. "There's lots of instrumentation, a little reminiscent of old school Hip-Hop." As for the concept, it's a wild ride into the darker, uncensored side of his brain, an idea he got from one of his favorite flicks, "Donnie Darko". "Frank the Rabbit" will hit stores this summer. .......................................................................................... New Soul Assassins Album On The Way - By : Mil - March 22, 2009

Lead by multi-platinum producer DJ Muggs, California's Soul Assassins crew is a movement. With a hand in street apparel, art & graphic design, video production, radio, custom car detailing, and of course, music, it's no exaggeration to say that these guys have the streets on lock.
With lots brewing on all sides of the clique, Muggs has assembled a hot lineup of crew members and affiliates to showcase the musical wing of the Soul Assassins crew, all over his signature hazy beats that have been behind hits for Cypress Hill, Ice Cube, House of Pain & more.
Though the crew reps the West Coast to the heart, the album features top contributions from all over the hip-hop landscape. The RZA, La Coka Nostra, Prodigy, M1 of Dead Prez and Alchemist deliver the gritty East Coast boom-bap, Bun-B of UGK delivers the flow that put Port Arthur, Texas on the map, and of course B-Real of Cypress Hill, Xzibit, Evidence, Self Scientific, & Sick Jacken and more hold it down for the West. The album also features bubbling talent including Fashawn, PCP, and Young De, and even the return of Mugg's dark soul / trip-hop project Dust.
With Soul Assassins Radio running on stations across the country, a new line in their successful clothing company dropping this spring, and a 250-page retrospective on the crew in the works, it's safe to say that the Soul Assassins are taking over this year. We have the tracklisting for the album below.
Soul Assassins - Intermission (June, 2009, Gold Dust)
1. Gangsta Shit - Bun B + M1 2. Classical - Sick Jacken & Evidence 3. Gunshots - Chace Infinite & Alchemist 4. Do It - La Coka Nostra 5. Rep Yo Shit - P.C.P (Sick Jacken &Necro) 6. "The show also marks the So-Cal return of [Eyedea & Abilitie], who haven't played the NOS since the legendary Wu-Tang reunion at the 2004 Rock The Bells. Guerilla Union founder, Chang Weisberg, is also excited, saying this year should be the festival's biggest to date. "I can't wait to see all these acts. I truly believe this is the biggest and best line-up yet..." he says.
Since that comment Paid Dues have added to that line up with the addition of the buzz-worthy supergroup, Slaughterhouse, which consists of lyricists Joe Budden, Royce Da 5'9", Joell Ortiz, and Crooked I. .......................................................................................... Mack 10 Is "So Sharp" With Lil Wayne & Jim Jones - By : Rud - March 22, 2009

It was July 2007 when we first released a track that was said to be from the upcoming new Mack 10 solo album "Soft White" through his Hoo Bangin' label and Cash Money. That track Street Sh-t featuring Glasses Malone & Butch Cassidy was the last we heard on the album until March 2008 when we dropped the Ervin "E.P." Pope produced Big Baller with Glasses Malone & Red Cafe.
Shortly after a video for Big Baller was released and raised anticpation levels for "Soft White" once more.
Now after another hiatus we have just received what seems to be the new single that will lead us into "Soft White" which sees Mack 10 alongside Lil Wayne and Jim Jones. The track, which can be downloaded or streamed below, is entitled "So Sharp" and definitely has a more radio friendly edge that the 2007 single Street Sh-t.

.......................................................................................... Dubcnn Sponsors Rootbeer's "Pink Limousine Tour" - By : Rud - March 22, 2009

Dubcnn is one again proud to sponsor another Tour Series following on from the successes of the Souls Of Mischief, Living Legends and Grouch tours we have been involved with. This time we are backing "The Pink Limousine Tour" which kicked off last week in support of the recently released Rootbeer (Pigeon John and Flynn Adam) debut EP "The Pink Limousine" which hit stores on March 10.
"The Pink Limousine Tour" penetrates 14 markets throughout the Western United States and showcases energetic sets by Rootbeer’s one-of-a-kind dynamic duo Pigeon John and Flynn Adam.
The simple shortcut to that Rootbeer descriptive word puzzle could be something like “MGMT injected with some N.E.R.D and A Tribe Called Quest”. As clearly evident in their lyrics and style, Flynn Adam and Pigeon John are unapologetic purveyors of popular culture. Rather than making an escape attempt on this debut to something that was some subtle artistic departure from the Lost Angels-flavored West Coast underground laid back rap that raised them, the duo has grown more apt to fully open their arms and embrace a vast array of what is relative to their own contemporary culture consumption today. With an even more upped-tempo vocal cadence dancing on top of beatscapes that awaken even the hippest of skeptics, the music will make you jump up like a chimpanzee.
An unbelievably charismatic live show, mixed with the most infectious hooks you’ve wrapped your ears around in quite some time, Rootbeer slaps a smile on your face that you simply can’t contain. Like some of the lyrics remind you: “It feels so good, feels so great, feels so wonderful,” so tune in and dig it!
With Dubcnn as sponsors you are well catered for as we have 2 Tickets up for grabs for the duos final show at the Detroit Bar, 843 West 19th Street, Costa Mesa, CA 92627. The April 4th 2009 gig is 21+ and if you want a chance to win a ticket just email us here with your details!Discuss This Topic

.......................................................................................... Phil The Agony Prepares "Think Green" Album [Audio] - By : Nima - March 18, 2009

Phil The Agony (of Strong Arm Steady) is dropping an eco-friendly solo album entitled "Think Green" this spring, featuring guest appearances from Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Planet Asia, Chace Infinite, Mitchy Slick and more.
A “footprint-free” digital EP version of the release will be available on Earth Day (April 22nd) to be followed by the physical release in stores May 5th. The title track "Think Green" featuring Talib Kweli has been making its rounds since last summer.
We now have the second leak from the project for ya'll, the "Think Green" remix featuring Mitchy Slick and Chace Infinite. The original version will be included on the album as well.
Check out the remix below:
Phil The Agony - Think Green (Remix) (ft. Mitchy Slick & Chace Infinite)
With "Think Green", Agony takes a different approach in his mission, not only to fans of hip-hop, but also to eco-minded individuals. On the album's title track, Phil wastes no time in explaining why it’s important to think of our surroundings as he states: "I print my album on recycled paper so you ain’t gotta cut the rainforest, for me to sing the chorus…" The economy rides with the environment as the emcee creates, in his words, an "environmentally conscious hip-hop album" for 2009.
"Think Green"'s commercial packing holds true to Phil's vision, with a minimalist 100% recycled, eco-friendly CD sleeve. Phil has even partnered up with the National Global Releaf Program to have a tree planted for every copy of Think Green that is purchased.
Make sure to pick up your copy of the album when it drops!Discuss This Topic

.......................................................................................... Crooked I Talks First Leak From "B.O.S.S." - By : LilJay - March 17, 2009

Crooked I's name has been in the news non-stop since the shooting incident a few weeks ago, but the Long Beach MC is back to let the music do the talking and do what he does best: rap. We just got a hold of a brand new cut called "I'm Still A MC", which is produced by in-house producer Komplex. The song is the first leak from his upcoming "B.O.S.S." album, which will be available for free download.
"I'm leaking this song first just to give them a sneak preview of what "B.O.S.S." is gonna sound like" Crooked I exclusively told Dubcnn. "I'm gonna be performing this song at the Paid Dues festival, so I want them to hear some of the stuff first."
What made Crooked I decide to put out another free project? "I'm about to take a whole other lane, and I'm trying to think of a creative way to give people the album. I might set up a website where all the fans can sign up and download the album for free. I'm not a hard dude to negotiate with, but if you're a distribution company and you tell me you want 80% of my digital money, I'm not putting out my record with you! So I might as well give it to my fans for free opposed to put it out with a label, since they make all the money. I'm trying to make this a special delivery for the fans, and they get mad about that. But yo, I just want to cut out the middle man and give it straight to you, cause 9 times out of 10 the middle man tries to fuck me and the fans."
He also talked about the fans' expectations for the album: "My fans might fuck with me on this one, or they might not. We'll see. But I love them for supporting me all this time. I know they wanna be able to purchase stuff, because you can't say Crooked I is one of the best rappers ever if Crooked I don't have record sales that back it up. The flow is there, but the record sales have to be there too. And I think a lot of my fans, they can't win those classic arguments that we all have about who's the best MC."
Crooked I then revealed to Dubcnn that he just got back from working on new music with the Wake Up Show's King Tech. "We made some crazy records.
Last but not least, Crooked I commented on the cell phone footage of the shooting, which was posted online last week. "I saw the footage and I tried to get the sites to take it down. I called several people and told them to take it down the same day. Nobody wants to see some shit like that. But we're trying to find that guy who posted it in the first place, but what can I do man. It is what it is now." Stay tuned to Dubcnn for more info on "B.O.S.S.". Until then, check out the song "I'm Still A MC" produced by Komplex.

The Toronto native, who is a fan of Dubcnn and who hangs on our forum, stopped by the Dubcnn office to sit down for a video interview. Boi-1da is a promising producer from Canada who has worked with artists such as Ludacris, Trey Songz, G-Unit just to name a few. He talks about the projects that he's recently been working on as well as future plans.

A snippet of the Statik Selektah produced "Rollin Down The Freeway" featuring Glasses Malone, Kali & Termanology has been making its rounds in the trailer for the video game "Midnight Club: Los Angeles" by Rockstar Games.
The song is now featured on their new game upgrade which will be released tomorrow. Judging from the teaser alone, this track is a banger! Showoff West signee Kali out of Orange County provides the opening verse, followed by Termanology's hook and Glasses Malone's bars. These three cats definitely make a good combination...

.......................................................................................... NWA Biopic In The Works - By : Adon - March 10, 2009

It seems like over the last couple of years, biopics have become the new thing. Everyone from Ray Charles, to Johnny Cash, to Eminem have one. Most recently, The Notorious BIG biopic was released to critical acclaim, further opening the door for more Hip Hop biopics. There has been a lot of fan talk since Notorious hit theaters. People want more.
Fans won't have to wait much longer for an NWA biopic however. The movie, titled Straight Outta Compton, has recently been green lit by New Line Cinema. The urban drama will chronicle the rise and fall of the group. Following them from humble beginnings, to their fiery breakup in the early 90's, and ending with Eazy-E tragically dying of AIDS.
The film's producers, which include Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Tomica Wright (Eazy-E's widow), and Circle of Confusion entertainment, are now actively searching for a director along the lines of Curtis Hanson (8 Mile).

In honor of Biggie's legacy, production trio Cookin' Soul have teamed up with DJ Drama to release a new mixtape called "The Notorious B.I.G. Tribute". You can now download the mixtape by clicking here.
In related news, Dubcnn's Music Editor Conan Milne recently wrote a review of the much talked about "Notorious" movie.
