news New Heat: Damizza, Krazyie Bone, & Young De! - April 29, 2008 By : Eddie Gurrola

With a career that spans from radio executive, multi-platinum producer, talented MC, and record label owner, Damion “Damizza” Young has always been fascinated by the act of bringing artists together. “That’s my whole thing; I like putting crazy artists together,” states Damizza. “Being a part of that kind of stuff really pushes the brand of hip-hop and the brand of artistry.”

Such can be said for Damizza’s latest concoction, a soulful anthem entitled “I Been Around” that will be featured on his latest project, “Un-ree-leased.” The record features Damizza alongside Krazyie Bone and rising star Young De.

“Krayzie Bone was on my first hit record ‘I Still Believe’ with Mariah Carey and Da Brat. It makes sense that I start back at square one by collaborating with a legend like Krayzie and then bringing in someone that I highly respect from the new generation -- Young De. I’m from the middle generation, and it’s all about bridging the gap.”

“I Been Around”, which will be serviced to radio stations next week, is also slated to appear on the Japan Edition of Young De’s “Audio Hustlaz” street album with the legendary DJ Couz. “The street album has surpassed all expectations, so now we’re about to take it worldwide! Shouts out to DJ Couz,” says Young De. When asked about working on “I Been Around,” De expressed nothing but enthusiasm. “It feels like classic music. It was a pleasure and a privilege to work on this record.”

With a sound and feel that will resonate with classic Bone Thugs fans, as well as the new generation of hip-hop listeners, “I Been Around” is poised to appeal to a global hip-hop audience. Please contact brleaks@aol.com for interviews and booking info. “Damizza Presents: Un-ree-leased” will drop later this year. The Japan Edition of Young De’s “Audio Hustlaz” is set for a Summer release.

You know we've got the record for you to check out today too! Stream it by using the link below.

news Playa Hamm Releases Unreleased DJ Quik Collaboration Track - April 27, 2008 By : Rud

It's been some time since we heard new music from Penthouse Playas Clique member and long time DJ Quik collaborator Playa Hamm. However, thanks to Dubcnn's relationship with his sons, Young Giantz, who have been featured on Dubcnn over the past year [see updates] - we have a track that has, until recently, lain unreleased and unheard.

The track in question is the DJ Quik produced anthemic "L.A." which according to Playa Hamm was "Recorded a while back when Quik and I were still trying to put things together. We were in the process of making plans for a remergence.

"L.A." is a very mellow production with Playa Hamms trademark flow making this an ideal chill out summer song and a great time for us to be allowed to release this for download to the public courtesy of the man himself.

Playa Hamm - L.A. (Produced By DJ Quik)

When we asked him about any plans for an album release or any project with this or other unreleased tracks Playa Hamm told us; "As far as the prescence and the future is concerned, it's all about the Young Giantz and playing the position to the fullest extent of my ability. I greatly appreciate the love and support of Dubcnn, and it is definite that we reciprocate that!"

Our thanks go back out to Playa Hamm and the Young Giantz. Check out the track and leave your feedback on our very own forums.

news Deuce Maxwell Prepares "The Plushcat Sessions" For This Fall - April 24, 2008 By : Rud

It is always refreshing to hear some new music that is a little different from what we receive everyday. Recently we were re-acquainted with an artist by the name of Deuce Maxwell who is signed to a label called Clickwest Entertainment.

The young Southern California resident is gearing up to release a Jazz album entitled "The Plushcat Sessions" in the Fall and some of the material is reminiscent of some of the smooth "Quik’s Grooves" we've come to love over the years.

When we spoke to Deuce Maxwell about the album he told us; "This album bridges the gap for all those folks that have grown up with Hip Hop, and this album is just an extension of that, just cause it ain’t rap, don’t mean it ain’t Hip Hop."

We have some previews from the up-coming album including the lead single "After 2am" which is pitched as "Perfect for lovers, yet subtle enough, for a late night of cruising." The second track we have is the George Clinton featured "Soothesayin’" - both of which can be heard below.

After 2AM’
Soothesayin’ (Feat. George Clinton)

Other tracks to check for on the album would be the standout track entitled "Tune of Sade," an exceptional track that is creating a lot of buzz amongst fans recently, for its outstanding vocal performance that embodies the soulful sounds of its namesake. The full tracklist is shaping us as follows;

01) City Heights
02) Soothesayin’ (Feat. George Clinton)
03) Party for Two
04) Ezzie’s Interlude
05) Birdsong
06) Live to Regret
07) Cissy’s Interlude
08) After 2AM’
09) Fly Away
10) Tune Of Sade

news "It Takes A Nation" To Hold Ice Cube Back! [Audio] - April 22, 2008 By : Nima

You already know when Ice Cube goes into war mode, all hell is gonna break loose. After releasing a first appetizer off his upcoming solo album "Raw Footage" in the first single "Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It", along with the remix featuring Scarface and Nas, the West Coast War Lord is blasting out another album track called "It Takes A Nation".

In times where every artist is worried about "finding the right single", it's truly refreshing to hear an artist like Ice Cube, in who's music you can truly feel that it's ginuine and coming from his heart.

"It Takes A Nation" is Ice Cube at his finest: raw, uncut and political. The beat, courtesy of Emile, is banging too, ya'll need to turn this one up to really feel it's energy. Cube calls himself "the only rapper that wants to fist fight the president" on the track, and it's a good representation of what he's offering us with his latest tracks. Check out "It Takes A Nation" below:

Ice Cube - It Takes A Nation
Ice Cube - It Takes A Nation (Clean)
Ice Cube - It Takes A Nation (Instrumental)

No wonder The Game calls Ice Cube his favorite rapper on his "Pain" single - we all should! "Raw Footage" is dropping in stores and online on August 19, 2008.

It was clear from the jump that Nas' upcoming album would be a controversial one - the title alone, "N-gger", made sure of that. However, for the past few weeks it's been quiet around Nas and his new album, the release date was pushed back and a first single seemed far away.

All that changed yesterday when "Be A N-gger Too" hit the internet, Nas new track. "Not mad cause Eminem said n-gga, cause he my n-gga, wigga, cracka, friend/We all black within, okay", Nas raps over the energetic production.

news The Game Hooks Up With Keyshia Cole For "Pain" - April 22, 2008 By : Nima

The anticipation for The Game's third album "L.A.X." is building by the day, and so is the controversy surrounding the Compton rapper. It's reminiscent of the hype around "The Documentary" and "The Doctor's Advocate" before both of them dropped.

Game definitely knows how to keep the people talking, and while not everybody has good things to say about him, one thing they can't deny is the heat he brings when he drops his music. "Big Dreams" started it off, and he's followed up with "Pain", a summertime collabo with Keyshia Cole.

A sort of dedication to those who paved the way for him, "Pain" finds Game shouting out his peers over the feel good production, with Keyshia lacing a smooth hook. The track has been buzzing online since this weekend, and is definitely a good look for Game. Check it out below:

The Game - Pain (ft. Keyshia Cole)

It looks like he can't stay away from beef this time around either, as 50 Cent recently placed the release of G-Unit's upcoming album "Terminate On Sight" on the same day as The Game's release date, and 50 Cent recently announced that he would have Game's album pushed back. Sounds like business as usual for 50 Cent and The Game, we'll see how all this plays out within the next few weeks. Until then, keep your ears open for new music from The Game and his antipicated "L.A.X." project, right here on dubcnn.

Today's review takes to task a current fan favorite. Since its recent release, Westurn Union's mixtape House Shoe Musik Vol. 1 has been receiving nothing but praise from listeners. Now, it's our turn to weigh in with our official verdict on this offering from the talented trio of Damani, Soopafly, and Bad Lucc.

"House Shoe Musik" receives the Dub Quotable: "Both a celebration of hometown pride and a middle finger to those that oppose their stance, Westurn Union have delivered a fine introduction to their movement. Damani, Soopafly, and Bad Lucc are clearly on to something that does the term justice." and earns an admirable Dub Rating.

news Tyrese Retires From Music.... Until He Wins An Oscar! - April 16, 2008 By : Nima

We have some exclusive breaking news from Tyrese aka Black Ty for you. The singer/rapper/actor is used to wearing many hats, but has decided to keep one of them on from now on, until he reaches a certain goal: winning an Oscar.

"I shut down everything on the music side. My new name is Tyrese "Oscar" Gibson", Tyrese told dubcnn. "I'm gonna drop another album after I grad the gold one, no joke!" Ty says he's turned down several collabo's with major artists in the past week to fully concentrate on his new task.

"It was hard, but I know that if I sing on another song, it's gonna suck me right back in the game. I've done 15 years of straight music, and I will do it again. One day. I will do my next album after my Oscar for Best Actor party", Ty said.

This came out of nowhere, as we just recently held a contest on dubcnn where Tyrese was giving the fans the opportunity to pick the featured artists on his single "Cycle Of Death", for his planned "Black Rose" album. Crooked I ended up winning the contest and Ty and Crook even met in the studio, but it looks like we won't be hearing the result of their collaboration - not yet.

Tyrese currently has 4 movies coming out back to back, including "Legion" with Dennis Quade and Paul Bettany (Da Vinci Code) and "Transformers 2". "My relationship with God is so powerful because I surrender to whatever he tells me to do and never let up until it's done. He put on my heart that I'm gonna win an Oscar and that's it. It's gonna happen."

The dubcnn staff would like to wish Tyrese all the best for his upcoming movies and any other ventures he decides to get into. When he decides to pick up the mic again, expect to hear it about first, right here on dubcnn.

news Suave House Records Returns! - April 16, 2008 By : Adon

Long time fans of the legendary Houston based record label, Suave House have been missing the unique sound for almost 10 years. The labels owner Tony Draper, though not focusing on Suave House, has kept himself quite busy over these past years. Recently, he helped pushed Ice Cube's independent release, "Laugh Now, Cry Later" record -- for which Cube owned his own masters -- to an astonishing 600,000 SoundScan sales. Additionally, he orchestrated the Clipse's groundbreaking 5-year 50/50 deal at Sony/Columbia Records, again entitling the Clipse to ownership of their masters.

But after helping others, he’s ready to get back in with Suave House (Now called Suave Records). He recently inked a deal and teamed up with KOCH to resurrect the label.

"The saying 'I'm going independent' is all you hear now!" says Draper. "But I've been independent since day one! I assembled the one-stop distributors like MS, Big State, CRD, City HALL, Maverne, and Southwest Wholesales. Then I made Select-O-Hits the point guard to collect from those companies. All told, I sold 700,000 records before I ever got with a major label."

Draper will be teaming up with his long time friend Alan Grunblatt at KOCH, who supported a young Draper in the early days at Relativity Records. In three short years, Draper and Grunblatt generated $25 million in revenue and firmly stamped the map with Southern rap.

The first release under this joint venture will be 8Ball & MJG's "Greatest Hits," dropping May 13th. Next up after that will be Philly phenom Gillie Da Kid, and the next mouthpiece from the South, Jiggolo.

news Ya Boy Drops "100 Bars Of Death" Video! - April 15, 2008 By : Nima

For anybody who hasn't heard Ya Boy before, his "100 Bars Of Death" is a good place to start. Over the banging Infra Red production, YB flows for 100 bars, leaving little doubt about his rapping abilities. Ya Boy just shot a video to the song, which you can watch below:

news Paid Dues Announces Additional June Festival Dates - April 11, 2008 By : Rud

This years Paid Dues independent hip-hop festival, promoted by MURS 3:16 in association with Guerilla Union (Rock The Bells, Cypress Hill Smoke Out), powered by SanDisk - and proudly sponsored by Dubcnn - has announced it has expanded throughout June.

A new series of festivals will take place in New York, Ft. Lauderdale, Denver and San Francisco. Tickets to these additional dates go on open sale Saturday April 19th however at the foot of this update you can see all ticket sale/pre-sale information.

After wrapping up its third sold-out annual Southern California festival date on March 22 [full event gallery and media coming to Dubcnn soon] artists included on the line-up such as Sage Francis, Little Brother, Hieroglyphics, Buckshot of Boot Camp Clik and Yak Ballz will appear on these additional festival series dates as well. Also confirmed to join on select dates are Rakim, De La Soul, GZA, Blackalicous, Supernatural & Scrath, Kidz In The Hall, Solillaquists Of Sound and Braille - with Murs and 9th Wonder to host. For further details check out guerillaunion.com/paiddues.

Dates and venues for the June Paid Dues Festival Series are: Wed June 4, Nokia Theatre in New York, NY. Sat June 7, Club Cinema in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Fri June 13, Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, CO. Sat June 14, Berkeley Community Theatre in Berkeley, CA.

Artists Buckshot, 9th Wonder, Kidz In The Hall and Braille have all signed onto the festival series in support of their upcoming album releases. Braille's "The IV Edition" is expected to hit stores April 15 with a release by Buckshot & 9th Wonder titled "The Formula" to follow on April 29. Kidz In The Hall are set to put out "The In Crowd" on May 13 to close off the pre-festival series releases.

Rolling into its third year, Paid Dues supports a fan base of a vibrant scene of underground hip-hop artists all on one platform. Called "A conscious hip-hop love-in…" by Flavorpill, it supports this genre of music largely shunned by the mainstream media. Here, advanced lyricism, stinging political commentary and quality DJ performances flourish in a seemingly parallel universe. In 2006 the first Paid Dues festival with a line-up featuring Felt, Aesop Rock, Living Legends, El-P, Hangar 18 and more, sold out with over 5,000 concert goers packing the Shrine Expo Center in Los Angeles. The following year MURS and Guerilla Union, along with performers Felt, Living Legends, Sage Francis, Brother Ali and others, teamed up again for the Paid Dues festival tour for over ten dates across the country. This summer, Paid Dues seeks to expand its national presence with its festival series in select cities.

"“We are very proud to continue this partnership with Murs by expanding the Paid Dues independent hip hop platform to a festival series in select cities. We are introducing Paid Dues as a festival series with acts whom we feel champion the independent hip hop scene. Rakim and De La Soul not only pioneered the hip hop movement, they epitomized the DIY spirit long before the trend became common," states Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union. "Add in the rest of the bill and you have a platform of artists that truly illustrates what Paid Dues is about. With SanDisk’s ongoing support, the mission to both educate conscious music fans to capture and share content; and empower artists to produce and share that content in new ways continues to strengthen our community to ‘Wake Up Your Phone’."

Murs adds short and sweetly, "It’s summer. It’s Hip Hop. It’s going to be a good time."

Pre-sale tickets will be available through guerillaunion.com/paiddues on Thursday, April 17 and through myspace.com/paidduesfestival on Friday, April 18. After, general on-sale begins Saturday, April 19. See guerillaunion.com/paiddues for on-sale information in your area. Dubcnn is once again sponsoring and supporting Murs, Guerilla Union and the Paid Dues festivals.

news It's "Politics As Usual" For Termanology This Fall - April 7, 2008 By : Rud

Long featured on Dubcnn [see previous updates], Massachusetts-bred, New York-based rapper Termanology has finally secured a release date for his long awaited, highly anticipated debut album.

"Politics As Usual" is set to drop this Fall 2008 via a joint venture between Termanologys own ST. Records and indy powerhouse Nature Sounds. The record features a who's who of production royalty, with DJ Premier, Hi-Tek, Pete Rock, The Alchemist, Havoc, Buckwild, Nottz and Large Professor providing tracks.

The half-white, half-Puerto Rican MC has come a long way since he released his first 12-inch in 2002. Through his alliance with influential mixtape DJ (and fellow Massachusetts native) Statik Selektah, Term began earning the respect of Boston's hip-hop scene with several highly acclaimed 12" singles.

2006 saw Termanology catch his big break when legendary producer DJ Premier, whom he had met three years earlier, finally blessed him with one of his signature, scratch-laden beats. Watch How It Go Down instantly became an underground classic and Termanology appeared on hip-hop's international radar. The conscious hood anthem garnered the earnest MC tons of praise, landing him in The Source's "Unsigned Hype" and XXL's "Show and Prove" columns. Around this time Dubcnn also caught up with him for an exclusive interview and dropped that track's remix - Watch How It Go Down (Remix) Feat. Papoose & Lil Fame.

Since then, Termanology has quickly climbed the industry ranks with his Hood Politics mixtape series and continued collaborations with DJ Premier - some of those can be downloaded courtesy of Dubcnn here. Term's hard work resulted in a joint venture deal with Brooklyn-based label Nature Sounds, which he signed in late 2007. "I decided to go the indy route to have total control of everything related to my project," Term explains.

Nature Sounds is quickly becoming the indy home for classic hip hop. During the last couple of years the label has released projects by several artists that include hip hop cult icon MF DOOM, Wu-Tang's Masta Killa (Made In Brooklyn), the debut album from Havoc of Mobb Deep (The Kush), most recently, Pete Rock's latest (NY's Finest).

Stay tuned to Dubcnn for the latest news and media from Termanology's debut album "Politics As Usual" which is due in the Fall of 2008.

In September 2006 they released "Sidewalk Mindtalk: The Best of the Custom Made Mixtapes" shortly after signing to BabyGrande. Since then the highly anticipated album has been delayed as they awaited the now imminent release from prison of group member Six.

This allowed them time to drop two projects for download right here on dubcnn in 2007 - Street Cinema 4: Heavy Traffic and Custom Made - Truth Be Told EP with THX.

Just last month we released the first new Custom Made material of the year with group member Element's Great Expectations (Street Cinema - Volume 5) mixtape.

"Original Dynasty" will feature the whole group and looks set to be one of the releases of the year. Below you can hear the first track from the project, the albums title track that is produced by Frank Dukes.

news Bullet & Glasses Malone Warn "U Don't Want War" - April 5, 2008 By : Rud

Some of our readers may already be familiar with the artist Bullet, whether it be from MySpace or for those of us that read liner notes. His first mention came in the credits of the "Dyfunktional Family" soundtrack alongside Kurupt, Crooked I, Eastwood, Spider Loc, Gail Gotti, Danny Boy and the rest of the then Deathrow camp.

Since then Bullet has been working on music and has released albums back to back over the past two years.

In 2006 he released the independent record "Sounds Of The Bullet" which featured Danny Boy & Mark Sparks with production from Yak Money, Darren Vegas and Jim Gittum.

In 2007 he followed that up with "Str8 from the S.T.R.E.E.T.S." which came out via Thump/Universal and featured Danny Boy, Candyman187 and Trouble.

This year he has started work on his - as yet untitled - third album in three years. The new album, which will feature Glasses Malone, Kurupt, Petey Pablo, Crooked I and more is being readied for a fall release. Today we have the street single that Bullet has started pushing in the streets with copies available at the Compton, Lynwood and Slauson swapmeets. The track is called "U Don't Want War" and features Glasses Malone who is currently enjoying Radio and Video success with his Certified single.
