New DJ Quik music is rare – so when he speaks you know it’s time to listen.
The last music we had directly from Quik was the release of “The Midnight Life” almost two years ago which featured the Suga Free and Dom Kennedy assisted “Life Jacket” – and the incredible “Pet Sematary.”
While he works on Rosecrans the album he’s joined the many voices this week speaking out in the wake of the police shootings of Keith Lamont Scott and Terence Crutcher and the wider #BlackLivesMatter protest and injustice. The Compton legend has released a soulful record titled “Black Friday” where he urges;
“Don’t put your hands up. Don’s ask them not to shoot. Just say you wanna live. Now that’s a common truth.”
The melodic soul of “Black Friday” is juxtaposed with Quik lyrically venting his frustrations on everything from Donald Trump to the police shootings – even pointing out, in this the 20th years since ‘Pac died, that;
“If Pac was here, he’d write a song that would calm ya down – and I’d probably produce it, give it that Compton sound”
When he released the record he did so with the below comment;
“I wrote this piece because I don’t like the tumultuous air surrounding Black People. Someone had to speak up for the African American community on this Black Friday and I elect Me to do so. Love, David Blake aka DJ Quik”
