Critically acclaimed L.A. rapper, producer, and one-third of the legendary Dilated Peoples, Evidence, unveils the music video for his latest single “Powder Cocaine” [feat. Slug &Catero] today.
Mirroring the psychedelic production from The Alchemist [Eminem, Nas], the trippy visual sees the contents of a pill raining all over the world. Directed by longtime friend Jason Goldwatch, the arresting video is both imaginative and mesmerizing, and the symbolism pairs well with the diverse metaphors delivered by Evidence and Atmosphere’s Slug.
About the song, Evidence says when he first heard the beat, it reminded him of his mother. “She was a Beatles fan,” he explains, “I wanted to do some thing nostalgic.” As for the song title, he jokes, “I’m probably the only person in Los Angeles who’s never tried cocaine,” noting it was just a metaphor for something that’s finely textured. “It’s an anti-coke song, really.”
“Powder Cocaine” remains a standout from his third full-length solo album, Weather Or Not—out now via Rhymesayers Entertainment. Impressively, it bowed in the Top 10 of the Billboard Top Independent albums chart and earned acclaim from HipHopDx and Pitchfork who claimed, “As his latest solo LP shows, the raw, twisted style he’s always favored still feels fresh in 2018.”
