I guess between these two, Compton has it beat; 2 songs to 0. I feel like I've been let down by so many Snoop albums that this release wasn't so much of a disappointment to me.

THe Compton album sort of caught me by surprise by how bad I thought it was. Production-wise, it's fine. What you would expect from Dre but his vocals were just atrocious. The K. Dot's influence on this album, the voice inflections. Overall, just didn't feel like a cohesive album.

Between these 2, I probably would say Compton, but that's a hard choice

1. Compton was disappointing, Missionary was not
2. Dre sounds terrible on Compton, he sorta got his normal voice back on Missionary
3. The Compton mixing is horrible. I think it's been pointed out before, but the album is somewhat hard to listen to. It was the first time Dre mixing has been shit, and while Missionary has similar problem, it's still better
4. Justus and King Mez are fucking amateurs that ruined Dre's comeback with their shitty writings. There hasn't been worse ghostwriters for Dre than these 2
5. Talk about it legit might be the worst thing Dre ever rapped on, behind only INAD
6. Snoop features on Compton were completely wasted, while Dre appearances on Missionary were fine

Buut.....
Despite not liking the album when it came out, I ended up enjoying it years later lol. The problems I had with it are still there (mixing still horrible, Dre voice is fucked up etc etc) but the album has some nice vibe to it (not the laid-back type of vibe tho) that I can't explain and it's kinda nostalgic to me at this point (takes me back to a simpler times too), the features are more interesting and it introduced me to Paak, and the album overall is more cohesive.

Missionary was alright, some tracks on it are much better than most shit on Compton, but the album lacks direction and it sounds like a bunch of random tracks thrown together, and while it was cool to hear Meth, 50 and Dre with Snoop, some features didn't make sense. Overall the album doesn't have no vibe to it.
Although Snoop and Dre sound better on it than they did on Compton.

So it's probably Compton for me.

the mixing on compton is way better than missionary

while compton is super bright, it wasn't sonically weak

still had thick low end, poppin instrumentation, big sound

missionary was not only overly bright, but super thin overall as well

it's night n day

Both have similar problems

The difference is Missionary doesn't make your ears bleed and you can at least hear the drums having more weight than Compton

naah .. the drums bang harder on compton .. and the bass isn't super thin and underwhelming like it is on missionary

could be your system and how u got your settings.. generally speaking, the beats on missionary sound way smaller

the main issue with compton is that i felt the vocals coulda used a little more de-esser ... but i thought that was on purpose to keep the lyrics sharp ala stadium music

I like both albums but like others said they both have their flaws and Dre's voice on Compton put's me off, sounds so forced like he's constipated.

Snoop sounds really good on Missionary and to me the album is more cohesive where Compton sounds messy and probably would have benefited from cutting the track list down.

Snoops album could have used more DPG/Death Row features and Dre's album would have been better without King Mez, Justus and Dem Jointz.

Compton starts off really bad and chaotic with Talk About It where Missionary slides straight into a smooth track with Shangri-La.

Both albums have some greats tracks but if I have to choose one for me it's Missionary.

“Talk About It” was a perfect jump off… because we’d been anticipating a Dre solo for over a decade and it didn’t seem real, like is it really happening, it was surreal…

So first it starts off with Mez some unknown cat so the anticipation was just building and building and then Dre’s voice comes in almost like part of the beat or like another Med verse—so that moment when it hits you that it’s Dre, that was shock ⚡️ value for me!!

I thought it was perfect… “I just bought California!” Cause he’d just made the beats 🎧 deal.

It’s a hype track to set off the album with the right energy.

I'm far from the only one who had this problem tho, it's been one of the main criticism since day one
And I tried to play it on many different systems... everything sounds so sharp and make your ears hurt, the drums and bass are basically nonexistent... and again, MANY people had that same issue which has never happened with any of Dre's music so I guess it wasn't just me and my systems

The first time I was playing it I thought my headphones were broken so I played some other songs and they sounded completely fine

Even tho I don't like outta da blue, at least you can totally feel and hear the BOOM BOOM BOOM it makes when the songs starts, it has more weight than on any song on Compton. The problem with missionary is that it's way too overproduced like most of Dre's modern music, but I don't recall having a problem with the way drums and bass sound

go read the discussion threads again .... compton was actually praised for its mixing in real time  .. missionary was questioned sonically from the jump .... people thought it was an upload mistake online and that the CD would sound better lol (unfortunately, it was the same masters on the cd)

the sibilance on compton is definitely on the harsher side compared to his previous work .... but the music overall sounds bigger and the layers have life

Eh. I guess I prefer Missionary. But that's like saying, I'd rather get punched in my right eye, rather than getting punched in my left eye. I really don't like either album. Compton is the most boring sleep inducing Dre-produced album ever. Missionary at least has a few okay-ish songs.

Dre needs to stop with the high pitched Kendrick flow where he goes fast/slow every verse. Bring back the deeper voice and the more deliberate flow from Chronic and Chronic 2001. Dunno what happened to him that changed his voice so much but his rapping has been terrible ever since.

When was the last time Dre used that flow?

Compton is a very big, brash ambitious album that is like a compilation and has a lot going on.  One thing it's not is boring, and there's certainly some gold on there like All On Me, Talking to my Diary, Loose Cannons and the intro (Dr. Dre always does great intros for his albums).

But in a way that's the thing that grates the most - it's so loud and in your face and hyped up that it barely leaves you time to draw breath and process the album.  There's none of that laid-back gangsta rap that Dre had on his previous albums, and the biggest gripe like others have said is Dre's forced voice and flow clearly influenced by hanging with Kendrick Lamar too often.

I remember taking a dedicated trip to go pick up Compton and listening to it on the way home I really didn't know what to make of it, sonically it was, and is amazing, but getting finished listening to it on that first day I was somewhat underwhelmed and disappointed that it didn't sound how I wanted and expected it to sound.  I think like others have said, if this was someone else's album we would be raving about it still but naturally we hold Dr. Dre to higher standards when it comes to his music.  But I still revisit the album here and there and enjoy it when I do.

With Missionary, I would say it's more cohesive than Compton and Snoop sounds great on it, but with it billed as a successor to Doggystyle, I was honestly expecting a bit more gangsta shit and traditional west-coast sounding Dre beats and legacy Death Row/N.W.A family-tree guests on the album than we got.  But in the end we got a more mature-sounding Snoop album (which I should have seen coming to be honest) but one which lacked the excitement and bounce of some of Snoop and Dre's previous work together.

Funk was severely missed from both albums. Those infectious melodies that draw you into the best Dre beats are pretty much non-existent in both Compton and Missionary. The beats for Gorgeous and Sticcy Situation came close but that’s about it.

bingo

Compton was tremendous .. the main issue people had was that they expected a continuation of the 2001 sound and got something totally different
