The DubCNN “On The Come Up” feature has cast a spotlight on some incredible talent down the years, and one city that is in the top 5 of featured artists – is Compton.

Compton is known around the world for its rough reputation and being the birthplace of Gangsta Rep. However, what’s often overlooked is its working class population that is often caught between gang violence and a middle-class lifestyle.

Kendrick Lamar emerged as the “Good Kid” from the Maad City to prove that you don’t have to be “Gangsta” in order to be a successful Compton artist. At the same time, K.Dot has shone a light into the troubles his city has suffered from.

Today we introduce Marleik “Mar Mar” Walker II, a CPT native himself who is looking to continue in that same vein – giving the world a view of his “Hub City” as a young man raised in a working class household.

Mar Mar began to develop his entertainment skills from the age of 5, which would eventually lead to recurring roles in NBC’s “Guys With Kids,” and Nickelodeon’s “Bubble Guppies.” After spending one season with each show, Mar Mar moved on to bigger roles with the Disney Channel’s “Austin & Ally” and Disney XD’s “Lab Rats.” In 2015, Mar Mar landed his biggest role to date as the voice of Franklin in The Peanuts movie which also allowed him to travel all over the country to promote the animated film.

Old school DubCNN readers will remember his father Marleik from countless mixtapes such as Perfect Timing, his “What’s Good” andRed Dress singles, as well as appearances on Taje’s Hot Box, Western Hospitality 4 – but he’s now turned his attention to support his son Mar Mar make the transition into music.

Mar Mar is working on his debut project “PG-14” and judging by his first record this isn’t set to be anything light or for kids – this is an introspective view of a young man, in a tough city.
