news Jag & Dubcnn Present: "Music Money" Mixtape Download - January 31, 2007 By : Rud

It was a little over six months ago, in July 2006, when Jag first graced the pages of dubcnn. Since then the Watts native has been busy building his buzz, growing his fanbase and most importantly recording new material.

The response to our initial introduction to Jag via our On The Come Up article was immense, he quickly ammassed a vast number of plays and downloads of the two tracks we premiered and captured the imagination of many on our forum.

Jag, who successfully battled 5 different MC's at the famed "Fight Klub" in New York last year, told us in July "I plan on getting a deal and have longevity in the rap game, I don't want to be a one hit wonder, what stands out about Jag is that I'ma always do me" - part of this plan has always been to release a set of mixtapes under the collective series title "Music Money," the first of which is called "Money Over Fame" and in conjunction with dubcnn is available for free download.

The mixtape features no named features, Jag opts to keep it simple with skill, mic prescense and lyrics over a blend of original production and mixtape style freestyles. The original production is handled by a host of names that are becoming more familiar by the day including Ricc Rude, 1500 Or Nothing, THX, The Animal House, Notch, and DJ Prosper. What you will hear on this release is Jag's flow, lyrical ability and song writing skills - he is by no means one dimensional, Jag is quickly becoming a complete artist.

news Timbaland Ready To Deliver "Shock Value" In March - January 30, 2007 By : Rud

Perhaps the most listened to producer of 2006, Timbaland, is ready to claim 2007 as early as March. Already acknowledged as one of music’s most inventive and distinctive creators Timbaland plans to take that to a whole new level on his second solo album.

The new release "Shock Value" will be released on his Mosley Music Group label via Interscope on March 27. The first single, "Give It To Me," featuring Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, is already making waves not only due to its musical brilliance but also cause of the apparent subject matter.

The single seems to feature all three of them going at respective foes - who...we'll allow you to decide - you can listen to the single below.

Timbaland - Give It To Me (Feat. Justin Timberlake & Nelly Furtado)

When asked about the album Timbaland explains "My mission is to blow up the boundaries and tear down the limits, I’m taking my music outside of the box. I’m not getting away from what I’m known for; I’m just going to a place where it’s all about the music, not about the labels on the music. That’s why I call it Shock Value - from the artists to the production, it will shock the system."

"Shock Value" is said to be sequenced like a movie according to Timbaland with a non-stop flow that tells a story. Off-the-wall beats, raps, hooks and his signature sound grace the soundscape with the album said to successfully fuse genres from rap and hip-hop to pop, punk pop and garage rock to South Asian influences. The album’s guest artists include Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg to Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado; from The Hives, She Wants Revenge and Fall Out Boy to Elton John (on piano) and newer artists such as Sri Lankan hip-hopper M.I.A. and Keri Hilson - who is signed, as is Nelly Furtado, to Timbaland’s Mosley Music Group.

You can also catch Timbaland on Justin Timberlake's 38-date North American leg of the FutureSex/LoveShow World Tour, which kicked off in San Diego, CA on January 8th and runs through March; check your local area for details.

news Angeles Records Plan 2007: Muggs, Self Scientific - January 25, 2007 By : Rud

With 2007 quickly gathering momentum one of the Westcoast's biggest underground label's has released its record release plan for the coming year.

The label, part of the DJ Muggs / Soul Assassins brand will include, among others, "The Soul Assassins Collection." Picking up where Muggs Vs GZA "Grandmasters" left off, DJ Muggs is currently teaming up with Jacken of Psycho Realm/Sick Symphonies for a Muggs Vs Sick Jacken album, as well as "King Medallions" - the alter ego of one of your favorite underground emcees, for the "Muggs Vs King Medallions" project.

Along with that will be the long awaited DJ Muggs "Soul Assassins 3" album which we reported on throughout much of last year, the album is set to be in the style that Muggs himself pioneered. - dark, hardcore and underground.

2007 will also see the release of the "Black & Brown Underground" album, a collaboration effort between Self Scientific and Sick Symphonies. The album will focus on the long time Los Angeles rivalry between the Black and Hispanic community, as well as promoting unity between the two for the new generations.

Self Scientific, as we exclusively revealed last year, will be putting out their second full length album on Angeles Records entitled "Come In Peace, Prepare For War." Expect more consciously charged lyrics from Chace Infinite and some of LA's hottest beats from producer DJ Khalil.

Later in the year you can expect the long awaited "Cali Untouchable Radio" album from DJ Warrior as well as a debut album from a group we exclusively revealed existed last year; Warfare, a combination of Skinhead Rob (Transplants) and Damu - the album is to be produced entirely by Travis Barker.

You can expect dubcnn to bring you news and audio from all these releases as well as a host of exclusive and detailed interviews with the artists and producers. Until then you can visit the official Soul Assassins page, the Angeles Records website and their MySpace page.

news San Quinn Shoots Video To "Hell Yeah" - January 24, 2007 By : Nima

Over a year after it came out, the video to one of the bangers of 2006 is released! I'm talking about San Quinn's E-A Ski produced slumper "Hell Yeah". The song was praised when it dropped, but never managed to become more than a local hit. Hopefully the video will change that around, as it's set to air on MTV Jams soon. Allen Anthony, who sings the hook, doesn't appear in the video, and neither does E-A Ski, whose verse is also left out, as he couldn't make it to the video shoot.

Nonetheless it's a hot video to a hot song, download it below:

San Quinn - Hell Yeah (9MB, Windows Media)

For the YouTubers amongst you, you can also watch it here.

For those of you who don't know the song, it's from San Quinn's highly underrated album "The Rock: Pressure Makes Diamonds", which dropped last year. If you haven't, make sure to give the album a listen. You can also watch another video off the album here, for the song "Do That For Me".

news Rell Dert Responsible For The "Derty Werk" - January 22, 2007 By : Lil Jay

"Who's Rell Dert"? "He's that MC who's killin' everybody's flow on the streets". That is what people began to say about him not too long ago in the Bay Area. You might have seen the promotional banners running on Dubcnn last year. And today we'd like to officially introduce you to Rell Dert with the complete package.

The 26-year-old Rell Dert was born in East Palo Alto and moved all over the Bay and Philly before he found a new home in South San Francisco's notorious Cypress Park area. Rell started off with his first rap group L.A.S. (Lyrical Assault Squad) in the 90's, and later followed up with shows and battles. So from all this, his name started to spread by word of mouth.

Rell has a wide range of influences: from Big L, Rakim, and Big Daddy Kane to Michael Jackson, Jimmy Hendrix and Luther Vandross. You can tell in his music he has been well seasoned by many genres of music. Rell Dert speaks the truth on each and every beat he lays his vocals over. His songs vary from just speaking about plain life in general to, "Hood Shit" and going hard. Rell captures all life in the simple touch of pen to paper.

To showcase Rell's skills with the pen, Dubcnn has two tracks available for your listening pleasure. They are taken from his upcoming album "Derty Werk", due out March 6th on CTDC Records. You might have heard the lead single "Double Fisted" getting spins on radio stations in the Bay. The second track we got is called "Cut Back" and it features Keak Da Sneak & R-Kayne on a verse each. Both were produced by TB, CEO of CTDC.

Rell Dert - Double Fisted
Rell Dert - Cut Back Feat. Keak Da Sneak & R-Kayne

news Shame Brings You "California" [Free Album D/L] - January 21, 2007 By : Nima

I'm sure most of you have had the experience of listening to an artist you're unfamiliar with, and he/she surprised the hell out of you. That's the reaction most people have had when they listened to Bay Area artist Shame's album "California", which was recently released to the internet for free download.

19 tracks of real talk, all but one produced by Shame himself, and all of that for free. You can't really ask for more. Those of you expecting a brainless Hyphy'd out album, be assured, Although the influence of the Bay Area's current sound is unmistakably noticable in Shame's music, his deep lyrics and sharp delivery create a fresh, unique sound.

For those of you who want to preview the music before download the whole album, I've uploaded two tracks from the album, which you can download below. The first one is the title track, a straight California anthem, which features XL Middleton. The second one, "What's Gangsta", is a song where Shame touches on violence in neighborhoods, and criticizes the glorified 'gangsta' image in today's Hip-Hop music.

Shame - California (ft. XL Middleton)
Shame - What's Gangsta

After hearing the two tracks, I'm sure you're convinced that the album is worth downloading, so go ahead and grab "California" below:

news Bishop Lamont & Young Dre Are "Cheah Beah!" - January 19, 2007 By : Nima

Ya'll cheah beah? Nah? You don't know what that is? Well you better get with it then! Young Dre originated the expression, and he hooked up with Aftermath artist Bishop Lamont to record the official "Cheah Beah!" anthem.

Over a bouncy DJ Khalil production, Bishop "The Proof" and Yound Dre "The Truth" trade verses, once again showing why their styles mash together so well. Dre switches it up on this one, coming with a real calm spoken flow, as opposed to his hyper flow he usually brings on tracks, while Bishop brings us his regular solid flow.

'Nuff talking, go ahead a grab the song below:

news "Gangsta Rap: The Glockumentary" Out March 2nd - January 19, 2007 By : Lil Jay

"I showed the trailer to my friends & everybody was laughing like a motherfucka. They thought it was real" - Too Short

"Gangsta Rap: The Glockumentary" will have its theatrical release Friday, March 2 on nearly two dozen screens in the L.A. area. The feature-length comedy is independently released by Ill Ville Films/Big Business.

Written and directed by Damon "Coke" Daniels, who co-wrote My Baby's Daddy with Eddie Griffin for Miramax, "Gangsta Rap: The Glockumentary" owes its street cred to Daniels' extensive turn in the world of hip hop, during which his group Madkap (Loud Records) toured with the likes of Notorious B.I.G, The Pharcyde, Twista, Common, The Alkaholiks and the Wu Tang Clan. Daniels also served as producer, alongside Craig Chapman, Chris Dreyer and Paul Stewart, who also handled the film's music supervision.

Shot in mockumentary style, with Daniels in the role as filmmaker, Gangsta Rap follows the flickering fortunes of Gangsta Rap, "the hardest group you've never heard of," a trio of old school, West Coast rappers: Murder Mike, Du Rag and DJ Ballistics. Despite run-ins with the law, shady dealings, numerous child custody cases, and a serious slide into irrelevance with the public, these self-proclaimed godfathers of gangsta rap are hell-bent on staging a comeback.

With fresh tracks such as "My Mamma's A Bitch" and "In My House Shoes," Gangsta Rap is angling to re-establish their supremacy. The group originally burst on the scene in the mid-eighties, virtually ruling the West Coast underground into the next decade. Following a slew of setbacks and some vicious in-fighting, the O.G.s put the past behind them to take one more stab at success.

The film features an ensemble cast of both real-life rappers and stand-up comedians, including Howie Bell (P. Diddy Presents...The Bad Boys of Comedy; Jamie Foxx's Laffapalooza), Gerald Johnson (aka, Slink Capone The Cutaluff, produced by Too Short), Schuylar Harvey, Leslie (aka Leslie Jones; HBO's Def Comedy Jam; Girlfriends; National Security) Tomy'a Bowden (The Steve Harvey Show; Dahmer), Clifton Powell (Ray; Woman, Thou Art Loosed) and Sam Maccarone, director of the recently released National Lampoon's TV: The Movie and also features cameos by rappers Too $hort and GLC.

news Jerry Heller, Johnny J & Pablito Vasquez Form Label - January 18, 2007 By : Rud

Jerry Heller, the former manager of the multi-platinum rap group NWA, and the co-founder of Ruthless Records with the late revered rapper, Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, announced today that he has just signed an agreement, forming a new record label with veteran record producer Johnny J, who produced over 150 songs with Tupac Shakur, which include mega-hits like “How Do U Want It” and “Hit ‘Em Up.” Heller’s third partner in the new venture is Pablito Vasquez, who will serve as a liaison between the artistic and the business ends of the company, and heads up Streetlife Records.

Heller explained; "Our goal is to bring back economic integrity to the music business. The record industry was supposed to be a win-win situation between the artists and the labels. The way the business is structured now, however, many artists on major labels have to sell close to a million and a half units to recoup and break even. That is not what our label will be about. The music industry is supposed to be about everyone involved making money."

A master producer on the music industry’s A-list, Johnny J has created tracks on albums that have collectively sold more than one hundred million copies worldwide. His legendary production work with artists including 2Pac has made him one of the most successful record producers in terms of creating radio driven hits that stand the test of time. Johnny J who owns the production company, Klock Work Entertainment said; "Every day I am heard on the radio throughout the country, and that has been consistent throughout the years. I decided to partner with Jerry Heller, who is a major figure, responsible for the success of West Coast rap music. The fire would not have been set off without Jerry providing the business acumen."

While Johnny J with his nineteen years of recording experience, brings his spectacular production as an ingredient to the label, Heller says that Pablito Vasquez brings the street aspect to the label. "This is the label where corporate meets street," emphasizes Heller. Vasquez explained; "I will help oversee things on both the creative and the business ends, deal with contracts with Jerry, and I will work in an intercessory role at the label. This label will not be tied down to or limited to certain musical styles or genres. This is going to be way past the hoods. It is going to be about the streets, but we will release music and artists that will transcend both cultures and transcend neighborhoods. We are going to be about where we came from, but we are not just limited to a hood mentality. Our minds and our music go way beyond that."

The new entity will be called Streetlife/Klock Work Records, with the three principals being equal partners. Jerry Heller explained; "I get hit up for management and label partnerships at least a dozen times a day, this new label has the perfect combination for a partnership." Heller also says the new label will be similar in many respects to the Ruthless label, which he managed in its heyday, prior to Wright’s death. "The new label will focus on working with one album at a time, with more upcoming artists waiting in the wings. Most independent labels over-extend themselves, leading to failure. Part of the Ruthless model was having great production, a strong business vision, and a deep connection with the streets."

news Clyde Carson Speaks On "Two Step" & New Album - January 17, 2007 By : Lil Jay

A little bit over a week ago, Clyde Carson's newest single "Two Step" premiered on radio stations across the Bay Area. The song generated a buzz in the streets and the internet, not only because of the hit potential, but because of the dope production which got people talking. Word got around fast that Dr. Dre was responsible for the beat, after people believed to have heard elements similar to Dre's production. Being who we are, Dubcnn had to step in to clear the rumors about Dre having any involvement in "Two Step". The actual man behind the boards is producer Neff-U.

Dubcnn spoke to Clyde Carson earlier this week to discuss the song and get the 411:

"My man Neff-U produced it. I've been hearing the rumors that Dre did it, but it's all good. That's just buzz you know?" Clyde told Dubcnn. "I don't know where that started, but it was Neff-U. He's been doing production for Dre though. It ain't gonna be a big name for me to work with you. Whoever got beats that sound good, I'ma pick that. It's the quality of the music that counts, that's why people think it's Dre, but at the end of the day it's Neff-U. As long as the beats sound good, you can be a nigga on the corner selling beats. I'ma come fuck with you! I ain't got no big name producers on the album, not one. The biggest name I got is Kwame. Everybody else is people I just met and just heard of." Clyde continued.

Now that we shed some light on the situation, you can go back and listen to "Two Step", because this heater is about to make a lot of noise in the near future. You can expect more radio and even video play for the song, as Clyde picked the song as the official first single from his upcoming album "Theatre Music", due out in June.

"The track ain't really got no hyphy sound to it, but our music never really had no hyphy sound" Clyde said about "Two Step". "My whole thing is, I always wanna make universal music. It really don't matter if it got a New York, Miami, Atlanta, Houston, L.A. sound. My goal when I got into the studio is to make a universal sound, not to make a regional sound. To make a sound that everyone and every region can feel. That's like a no-brainer. When you hear it, it just sounds good, you don't care. And "Two Step" just happened to sound like some L.A. shit, but it sounds good to every region. That's the main point." Clyde continued.

In addition to "Two Step", he also has a street single getting ready to drop which is not intended for radio play, as it's strictly for the streets. The track is called "Don't Get Your Hood Stomped Out", so be on the look out for the song as well as the accompanying video. Clyde then proceeded to talk about the guest appearances on "Theatre Music":

"As far as guest appearances, I got Wyclef. Wyclef is a good dude, he's humble. He just came in there and did it. It was an accident. I was recording in the studio and he just happened to come in my session. He heard the beat and just got on the track, it's like it felt into his hands. Other than Wyclef I got Game and Too Short. That's the only big names I got on there." Clyde told Dubcnn.

"Theatre Music" is shaping up to be one of the highlights of 2007. He's just one step away from making his mark in the industry and making Clyde Carson and Moe Doe a household name. The signing with Capitol Records and the recently arranged joint venture with The Game's Black Wall Street aren't hurting either. The future doesn't look too bad for the Oakland native. As you can see, he has a lot going on. Besides his music plans, he's also expanding with the "Hyphy Juice". Look for a new flavor coming out very soon.

Back to the "Two Step" song; don't worry if you slept on the track, Dubcnn has the song available for your listening pleasure (the song is also featured as one of the "Newest Joints" on top).

news DJ Warrior & DJ Strong Earn MixUnit Honour - January 13, 2007 By : Rud

MixUnit.com recently analysed 2006's mixtape scene and honoured a host of the industries best DJ's and artists including The Game, DJ Skee, Lil Eazy E and countless others.

Two that landed in that list together, are collectively known as the copilots of the Cali Untouchable DJs franchise, DJ Warrior & DJ Strong. The duo's award was accompanied by the following; "Mixtape family for life, this tandem is the best thing to happen to West Coast mixtapes since bass control.

The West Coast has not always embraced mixtapes like NYC (and relatively recently, the South) has, but Warrior and Strong continue to hold down the land of gangstas and palm trees with a mixtape resume second to none."

The MixUnit appraisal focuses on some of the biggest releases for the DJ's over the past 12 months; "Often working together on their releases, 2006 saw the two partner with West Coast icons the Dogg Pound, The Game and Ice Cube for major mixtapes. But not only the red carpet emcees found a voice on Cali Untouchable mixtapes, however, as the pair made significant contributions to the mixtape game without the rap celebrities."

"Teaming up with some of the Left Coast's rising young stars, including Mitchy Slick and Lil' Eazy E, Warrior and Strong dropped 18 mixtapes in one month at one point, many of them for emcees you've never heard of (but will soon!). Recently honored at the 2006 Mixtape Awards with The Pink House Award, Strong and Warrior were recognized for their achievements as a mixtape duo, and their influence on the West Coast's mixtape scene is indisputable" - continued the feature.

Look for an even busier 2007 from the Cali Untouchable team and stay tuned for more colaborations with dubcnn.com including the recently released; "Meech Wells Presents: Young Joker - The Takeover" mixtape which we will be featuring in detail soon.

news Kurupt Proposes To Gail Gotti; Party In March - January 4, 2007 By : Rud

Kurupt and Gail Gotti recently announced their engagement after the Dogg Pound Gangsta proposed on Christmas Day. The two have been together some time and the proposal was presented with a Schlumberger Signature Ring from Tiffany & Co said to have cost in excess of $25,000.

The engagement to Gail Gotti [of Infamous/G-Unit Records] is Kurupt's third high profile engagement following seperations from both Foxy Brown and more recently Natina Reed of Blaque.

When asked about their future vows and plans Gail Gotti said; "Words could never describe the love and passion that we have for each other. What helps make our relationship so strong is that we are best friends. We are both excited and more than ready to take this next wonderful step together. We are looking forward to sharing this joyous occasion with our families and closest friends."

While the duo have said that there is not, as yet, an official date for the wedding there will be an A-List Hollywood celebration engagement party to be held in New York City at the end of March. We will keep you updated on all developments but for now everyone here at dubcnn wishes to extend its congratulations to the pair and wish them both the very best for their future together.

news Dubcnn Presents: The Best Of 2006 - January 2, 2007 By : Nima

2006 was a busy year in Hip-Hop, a lot of new artists coming up, veterans coming back, banging beats and useless beefs. With the year coming to a close, we at dubcnn decided to compile a "Best Of" feature for our readers.

After intense debate in the office we opted to go for a collection of the best in various categories rather than singling out individuals. This has resulted in what we see as a concise appraisal of artists and material that have featured in 2006. To check dubcnn's Best Of 2006, click below:

Dubcnn's Best Of 2006

Please be aware that the views and selections expressed in this "Best Of" feature are not necessarily the views of all but are by majority vote. As ever there are copious albums and artists that we had to miss off due to the restrictive number of categories and selections within each. Also please note that images shown do not represent a 'favourite' or 'winner'.

Happy new year everybody!
