If you think about it, its very sad if you have a West Coast vet like WC who been in the game for years, had commercial sucess with the Connect Gang a few years back (add Tha Liks, Nate Dogg and Warren G to that list), and then in 2002 he has the best Rap single of the year and one of the most overloooked album (together with Dj Quik) and cant sell more than 75,000 in his first month. its just sad. Mainstream just dont care for the West anymore.

mmhhh, i think the reason why WC´s and Quik´s new album doesnt sold well is that these album´s are not as good as any of their earlier releases. if you wanna commercial success, then make an album with more then just two or three good tracks. i agree with the rest of your post.

Crooked I could blow up big...but he should stop fucking around with murder inc. etc., i dont want a Crooked I album full of eastcoast pop rappers. i would like to see a complete solo album with max. 2 guests on it, all tracks produced in a bumpin westcoast style, hard hitting beats with lots of bass...gangsta beats (like on that LBC comp.)

Yeah, the media ain't giving West the props & exposure they deserve. Also the label shit is true, but that goes hand in hand with the media shit: If an artist gets lots of media attention and cats is listening, he's/she's bound to be on a label with good distribution & shit.

But to answer the question, there ain't nobody that can "bring back the West" alone, niggaz need to get together & make it happen. Neither of Dre's albums were Dre's albums alone: there's a whole bunch of artists all over them. The combo's on those albums worked well together well and made the albums hot. That's what's Detox is gonna be like, I'm sure of it: Dre (& Mel-Man) behind the boards all the time and Dre on the mic, but not nearly as much as others: the finest rappers & singers around.

I finally got my copy of Ghetto Heisman yesterday, shit is sooooooo hot. I know this album would push major units if it got more promotion: Sure, WC was on about every radio show and did a bunch of interviews and got recognition that way, but as far as I know most cats don't listen to all them shows and don't visit DubCNN or other sites. Those are for the hardcore fans. If WC's videos were played on MTV twice an hour and there were TV spots for the album like Nelly has, he'd sell a whole lotta records.

I don't have one special artists, but I would that chicano-rappers will bring the west back. They still work with the g-funk sound and they are working really hard. Just take a look at all these releases.

Dre should of course bring it back,he's the best producer around on the westcoast. BTW speaking about producers, does ANYONE know a female one?See i don't,and if there aren't any....ain't that a bit odd considering there are quite some female MC's........not that I'm female or a feminist just lovin' them for what they're best at.......  ;D;D I know quite some good ones..

It takes a whole crew to bring it back, like Jay said.  OR it will take someone wit a GREAT RECORD DEAL that can put out a bunch of good quality shit real fast. through a good a record deal, Some one that would get coast to coast promotion.  Some one still on top of his game and that can work non stop and keep coming out with shit here and there every year.  who am I talkin bout?  who else, besides the man him self.

I think Xzibit had the best chance as EVERYONE was on his dick for awhile....unfortunately, he dropped the ball.  I agree with others, DRE is the only one that can do it, he has done it three times and even though he is average right ow expect that he will do it again

Cube could drop a big album, but other than that, i dont know.  If Knocturnal would abeen handled properly, he could ablown up to even though he aint my thing.   Basically, the west wouldnt be where it is right now if NWA woulda came out, if a 213 album had dropped already, if Hittman and Knoc woulda formed a group and dropped right after 2001, and if SNoop and Dre would did the reunion album.

Artists like Ras kass are amazing but will never ressurect the west because he is an artist who should not make commercial tracks....his best chance was Home Sweet Home, but everyone knows what happened with that song!

Roscoe, his advance album was truly terrible but he does have potential.  Heiro, Defari, andd Phil Da Agony are dope, but do not have the right sound to blow up.......and that is what u guys mean by bringing the west back, right?

Quik and Snoop worked together in the past, and somehow the results were only average.  I would love to see it again, as i dont know how it couldnt be dope.

Soopafly (is dope as hell, that is true, but what he does will go unnoticed my majority)
Roscoe
Crooked I (too rugged to be huge, although the ROw is trying with Sisqo and Ja Rule and IRV)
Defari (one of my favourites, but too plain to do any damage)
Shade Sheist (terrible boring style, although he has made some incredible songs like WHere i wanna be and John Doe)
Knoc-Turn'Al (maybe my least fav. but the one with the most potential of this list, hope his career is not fucked by having to redo his album)

Someone metioned the ages of some artists that no one's gonna listen to 30 year olds, isn't dre nearly/in his 40's?

Anyway, I do't think crooked i will blow up, from what I've heard from him (I haven't heard that much from him, so it's unfair for me to judge), he's sorta one dimensional if you know what i mean. He's a tight lyricist, but comes out too raw, and doesn't really say anything (from what i've heard), just metaphors, where as dmx has a wide range, eg. slippin (i think this is what it's called) which is emotional, to the ruff ryders anthem a party track.

Anyway I don't think this problem is specific to west coast, the american market, (I live in the uk so i don't know about the american music market), or even rap, but music in general, which has been declining for a few years now.
Jay-z & eminem are the exceptions, not just rap but in music in general who are doing really good sales wise. Looking at this post, snoops sales look actually good (I like the cd).
There are too many music acts to compete with!

Knoc-turn'al is the 'new' artist that can blow up imo.

The problem is that artists aren't taking their time on records. this is where dre does well, releasing 1 album over a long period of time. he waits for the music market to get saturated, listens to the general style, invents a new style which every one will later associate as his, then drop an album.
Inventing a new style is the biggest reason, unlike others who just go with the current trend- it will usually be played out in a short period of time.
This is why I don't think dre will ever go back to the old style g-funk (although I still love it), because it's too played out (yes even now), plus it will always be compared to his past work (and will be considered unoriginal by critics)- the chronic & doggystyle where perfect, so how can it be any better using the same style, so invent a different style instead were it can't be compared with.
Everyone sounds the same (uses the same producers), and there isn't a differentiation between artists, which set each other apart. OK Dre is recycling some of his beats at the moment, and I don't blame him, because he invented a new style, now everyone's ripping him off, so he's making his money while he can, then he'll come back with something different.

However on a positive note, trends usually move in cycles. The west will rise again, then drop off, then rise again etc.

Dr. Dre

Everytime the West came back Dre was at the forefront.

Straight Outta Compton - Put L.A. on the map. Yes Ice-T came before but the mainstream didn't pay attention until N.W.A. dropped this album.

The Chronic - Put the West Coast at the top from '92-'96. Influenced the whole sound of the West.

2001 - Resurrected the West Coast.

Detox - ???

the west is pretty much dead commercially...the only acts i see having a chance to bring it back...crooked i, and maybe roscoe...but i dont see him appealing to much of the public...crooked i could be the wests last hope
