Bad Azz - overlooked MC?
« on: February 13, 2014, 05:37:46 AM »
It's funny, Bad Azz is a rapper that I always liked (good delivery, fresh rhymes, raspy voice), yet, he never release a record that I could listen to from top to bottom. Most of his albums had bangers here and there to be taken as pieces rather than as a whole.

This might translate into his career path: despite being schooled around Death Row's finest (Snoop, DJ Pooh, DPG) and the LCB Crew, Bad failed to garner much commercial success. Even with Personal Business which featured the biggest artists and producers such as Ice Cube, Snoop, Kokane, Jelly Roll, Battlecat etc. Despite having a successful single with "Wrong Idea" Bad thus seems to have had been as close to fame as one can get - only to "fall back" into releasing a slew of independent records and falling off the radar.

I never really dug Personal Business, nonetheless I am bumping a lot of his tracks at the moment. He seems like a really cool guy who remains humble and just has a positive vibe. Some of my favourite tracks are:

U Aint shit - Daz feat. Bad Azz
Incredible Hulk (prod. by Jelly Roll) - CAN SOMEONE HOOK ME UP WITH THIS??
Everyday - Bo-Rocc feat. Bad Azz SMOOTH RELAXING TRACK
Talkin Bout U
Round and Round feat. LaToiya Williams (prod. by Soopafly)

what do you guys think of Bad Azz? What are your favourite tracks?

Iam a pretty big Bad azz fan. I have bought all of his albums. Cant say that i have listened to him much for quite some time now though and his mix tapes that i heard sounded fairly shit.
But his first two albums were both really good. I agree some weak tracks though.
I always really liked him as a guest feature and was glad when he was appearing on all them dogg house albums and mix tapes.
Its a real shame that he dosent work with DPG anymore.
I always thought that he was fairly lyrical.
fave tracks? hmm, off the top; "puttin it down" with Snoop, "my people". argh theres a couple i really like but i forget the titles. probably half the tracks on "personal business" would be up there. His latter albums i cant remember so well off the top.
He was good on "out the moon" and other L.B.C crew tracks and that track on the doggys angles album.

I have to agree that he alwyas seemed pretty humble. he has songs with pretty meaningful lyrics and some good party tracks too.

He's decent, nothing special. I bought a lot of his earlier stuff, though I expected How We Get Down to take off as a single.

he's a very potent lyricist, like all the rappers from the LBC Crew were, good voice as well, entertaining overall,

his albums were good but underwhelming though, he's better as a featured rapper or in a group, the LBC Crew outfit was the perfect setup for him.

my favorite song from him is Blueberry, though it's on tha Doggfather, he was really on a roll during his LBC Crew days.

Speaking of Wrong Idea, it was on both Bad Azz's and Snoop's albums, but did it ever seem to be more one person's song than the other when it came to marketing and/or releasing?  I remember the music video on BET having both albums credited (Personal Business and Tha Last Meal).  I still bump that song.

Bad Azz is dope, he's really a humble dude
I recommend to check out some of his interviews
he did some really elaborate interviews where he talked about alot of behind the scenes stuff and regular day-to-day things
he seems like a real down to earth guy

I have to agree that he never dropped an album that was pure heat
but every album had a few gems that made them worth listening to
I think it's really sad that the LBC Crew album didn't come out back in the day
In my opinion that IS a good record and it would have been a better way to jump start his career
some of my favorite songs off the top are
"How We Get Down" (love this one, feel good song)
"No Hope"
"Everythang Happens Fo' A Reason"
"Krazy"
"Thug Song"
and more recently "Tha Lovely Ghetto"
just to name a few

Speaking of Wrong Idea, it was on both Bad Azz's and Snoop's albums, but did it ever seem to be more one person's song than the other when it came to marketing and/or releasing?  I remember the music video on BET having both albums credited (Personal Business and Tha Last Meal).  I still bump that song.

I think he talked about the story of that song somewhere, can't remember exactly
think he said that it was originally his song and supposed to be on his album and his single
but snoop liked the song and wanted to put it on his album so they agreed to put it out on both albums

Bad Azz definately held it down on a number of songs. Beware Of My Crew, Flossin', Blueberries, Krazy, Ghetto Star, I'd Rather Lie 2 Ya (Original) and my personal favourite,  Livin' It Up to name a few.

Thanks for pointing this out, had forgotten about that. They made two records together if Im not mistaken, in 2009 and 2012(?). Never heard these records but Bizzy is meh  :-\ below average to me. I can't stand his voice and he always acts like a cracka.

I guess this was Snoop's way of pushing Bad into the limelight. The song never got under my skin, but the beat (Jelly Roll) was ok with a good hook from Kokane and Lil Half Dead.
