If England were to win it, they'd probably get the 'the rest of the competition was weak, some of the teams are not as good as they used to be so that was why you won it' bullshit and the country would still complain. Because in our half, neither Germany, Argentina or France have been playing that amazing recently.

I know where you coming from mate but a team with the best centre forward in the world (bar maybe Torres) is gonna be dangerous. They're there on merit and did alright in 2006 as well.

hehe sure most of the big name teams have good records in group stages, thats the only way they make it out...but how will they perform against good teams and world cup is a different story. Overall England has fallen off the dangerous teams list sort of, they havent gone far in a very long time. Remember they missed euro 2008 not too long ago.

It would be foolish to say that England couldn't win the WC, hell Greece was Euro 2004. Not trying to be a dick and comparing England's 2010 chances to Greece's 2004 chances but they CAN win it.
That being said I can't see England having a strong enough ELEVEN to beat a team like Spain or Argentina or Brazil. And they will have to probably beat at least 2 outta 3 of them if they are to win it all.
No matter how good Wazza is at the moment, I can't see him carrying England to glory which is what will need to happen imho.

Capello will likely choose Barry because of his defensive anchor skills, but Huddlestone can do pretty much the same job with better passing skills. J.Cole, Walc & SWP on bench for creativity, if needed.
Attack: Rooney no-brainer, Bent or Defoe is 50/50, but Bent has been in far better form lately. Crouch/Defoe on the bench is the match-winner-bench you'd like to have.

Carra is horrible, his time has passed.. and seeing him as a RB, is just comedy, if you're not a Pool-fan, then it's more like a tragedy.

I've seen a couple of euro soccer sites that ranked him as the 3rd best Mexican player behind Dos Santos and Marquez. Since CQ took over as our manager, we have a 78.3% of keeping clean sheets in our matches, higher than any other team in the world. We've conceded 3 in our last 16 and are also on quite the long unbeaten streak. That's why we're 3rd.

Will be interesting to see if at least one African team can make it through the group stages. I wouldn't bet my money on this at the moment.
Cameroon and South Africa are a joke (I think they'll be the first host to exit after group stage), Ghana has potential, but :grumpy: @ losing 1:4 against Netherlands. Wouldn't surprise me if underdog Australia advances. Ivory Coast of course has the most potential, but they're clearly not in good shape and are in the killer group again :-X I think Nigeria has a realistic chance, they don't look to strong either but their group isn't that hard. Why's that? They were the better team until the goal. Mexico played a good WC, and yesterday they lost against the best team in the tournament so far.
I think Germany is the underdog against ARG. Yesterday they didn't even play well but they still killed Mexico. They are ice cold killers. Spain truly are the best team in the world and deserve to be champions. But that Dutch red card (2nd yellow) was pretty unfortunate, a bad call in my opinion by what is a world class referee in Howard Webb. The goal was 100% onside thankfully (wouldn't want to see the world cup winning goal be offside).
Although as I said I feel Spain deserve it, it sucks that three (?) Spanish opponents (Chile, Portugal, Netherlands) all got very undeserving red cards.

Spain, by the very virtue of their results, were worthy winners but they werent the best team in the tournament. NOWHERE NEAR. Maybe on paper theyre one of them, but their performances were below par and their route to the final was fairly easy for them.
Spain 1-0 Portugal
Spain 1-0 Paraguay
Spain 1-0 Germany
Spain 1-0 Holland
Sorry, but thats not entertainment. For a team that trade off the idea theyre this great attractive exciting passing football side, they were utterly dull and run-of-the-mill for most of the tournament.
Fairplay to them for winning, even with one of their stars like Torres playing a nightmare, but there were so many more entertaining teams in the cup than them.
Thrashings usually happen when one side can easily exploit the other team's weak points. Brazil 3-0 vs Chile (Chile attacks too much and pressures a lot, creating many spaces), Germany vs Argentina 4-1 (weak sidebacks, since they're really center backs and lack of defensive midfield). It's a major tournament for fuck's sake, I want to see intense matches that end 1-0, 2-1 etc. Tell me it isn't a work of art to see Xavi run the team, this guy sees plays a few passes ahead of time. The only thing I would wanted to see from this Spain side more was the attempt to shoot more outside the box, specifically from Iniesta and Xavi but these players are obviously pass no matter what almost. I still prefer a low scoring Spain that holds the ball to a low scoring cagey side that doesn't have good possession football.
To me the most impressive team was Brazil, but Brazil just had the weakest 30 min of the entire tournament and they're gone. Yet, I'm also certain everybody would say Brazil was boring and not entertaining enough.

No I actually completely agree with what youve just said about Brazil. Going forward they were spectacular. And I liked how they defended, they transformed defence to attack on the counter very quickly. And with flair.
That 30 mins was a shame, as I'm certain they'd have been able to beat Spain if they met.
