news Mistah F.A.B.: The Answer (Royce The 5'9 Diss) - October 29, 2007 By : Lil Jay

Only days after Royce the 5'9 put out a track taking shots at Mistah F.A.B. regarding the freestyle battle where Five Nine got murked at, Fab has just released his response. You can judge for yourself, but it looks like Fab got him for the first round, even though compared to the live battle this song is decent at best. But you can expect better things to come in Round 2, cause there sure is more to come. I doubt Royce is gonna stay quiet about it, and from what it looks like, Fab might have some words for Joe Budden too.

Look at it how you want, but this is an easy way for Fabby to get his name out there and showcase his skills. And I'm still wondering why Royce even had to go that route and talk slick about Fab when he clearly lost the live battle in the first place.

You can hear Mistah Fab's response by downloading it below:

Shouts to Dow Jones! Make sure you stick around on Dubcnn for the latest on this.

news Messy Marv Puts Album Together From Jail - October 19, 2007 By : Nima

2007 has been a rough year for Bay Area savage Messy Marv, but we have some good news for all his fans! The currently incarcerated rapper is putting together his next album "Draped Up And Chipped Out 2", which is set to come out November 20th through Scalen/SMC/Fontana.

This album should hold over his fans until he's released from jail, as it's already been over two years since Messy's last solo album "Bandanas, Tattoos and Tongue Rings". His new album was originally supposed to be called "Millionaire Gangata", but after his incarceration he switched it up, took 9 tracks from the album that were finished and put them together with other songs he had, which ended up being "Draped Up And Chipped Out 2", which is a compilation style solo album, featuring Juvenile, Mike Jones, Sean Paul (Youngbloodz), B-Legit, Mistah FAB and many more. There is even a collaboration between Mac Dre and Messy. When it came to production, Messy enlisted his longtime producing partners, DJ Daryl and Sean T.

Messy had the following to say about the album: "I know my fans is starvin' for that real Messy Marv shit, so while I'm sittin' down I had to re-up with Draped Up & Chipped and put a twist on it. You gettin' a feel for my solo album plus all the people that made Draped Up 1 go. But when I touch down, I'm back in these streets pushin' this independent line- know that!"

Mess was also recently nominated for Best Rap Act of 2007 for the San Francisco Weekly Music Awards, taking place October 18th. Check out the tracklisting to "Draped Up And Chipped Out 2" below:

news Common Shoots Video For "I Want You" - October 18, 2007 By : JustinL

Grammy winning rap superstar Common stars in his most provocative video ever, "I Want You," debuting this week featuring Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Derek Luke, tennis star Serena Williams, Will.I.Am and acclaimed actress Kerry Washington ("Ray," "The Last King Of Scotland," and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith") who also served as the co-director.

"I Want You," produced by Will.I.Am, is the latest single from Common's G.O.O.D Music/Geffen Records CD Finding Forever which debuted earlier this year at #1 on Billboard's "Hot 200" chart.

After making his acting debut last year with Keys in "Smokin' Aces," these dynamic performers are reunited as lovers in this powerful and passionate video inspired by the 1986 Mickey Rourke/Kim Basinger erotic classic "9 1/2 Weeks."

"Kerry and I have always admired each others work and always wanted to collaborate on a project. When we began planning for the video for "I Want You," I reached out to Kerry to star in it and it developed into her directing. She had a strong vision for the song that grabbed me from the start so we got our cast and crew together and made it happen," states Common.

news Ras Kass Finally Released From Capitol Records! - October 12, 2007 By : Nima

After several years of litigation, West Coast MC John Austin aka Ras Kass and recording label Capitol Records / EMI have entered into a settlement agreement, the exact terms of which have not been disclosed. While details of the agreement are not known, Ras Kass is now legally able to seek out new recording agreements and can seek out new deals with new labels.

Ras Kass originally signed with Priority Records through a deal with Patchwerk Records where he released 1996's critically acclaimed "Soul on Ice" and 1998's "Rassassination".

Ras Kass then re-signed directly with Priority and was set to drop "Van Gogh" in 2001 but that label's merger with Capitol, which was taking place at that time, affected the promotion of that project and after being pushed back twice, the project was permanently shelved by the label. The album had however been leaked on the internet and had been very well received by Ras' fan base.

A replacement album was planned entitled "Goldyn Chyld" featuring new material and tracks from the shelved "Van Gogh", with an intended 2002 release date. That project too was shelved following bitter disputes between Ras Kass and Capitol. Ras' subsequent incarceration that year, and the growing animosity between he and the label made future projects unlikely.

May 2004 saw the filing of a lawsuit by Austin in California which contained causes of action for Declatory Relief re: Labor Code Sec. 2855(b); Breach of Contract; Breach of Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing; Interference with Prospective Economic Advantages and Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress. Shortly thereafter, a lawsuit was filed in New York federal court by Capitol / EMI in August 2004 alleging Federal Copyright Infringement due to Ras' release of a mixtape entitled "Re-Up" for which Capitol / EMI obtained a default judgement against the MC. In the California lawsuit, Capitol / EMI filed a Motion for Summary Judgement, which was granted, and obtained a judgement against Ras Kass in the Fall of 2006; that judgement was appealed. "Re-Up" received a XXL rating in XXL magazine and was highly acclaimed on MTV's Mixtape Monday's and nationwide.

October 2007 sees a final and legal end to all of these disputes. Ras' managment team Asti Management (Styles P, DJ Kid Capri) is anxious to begin shopping the MC for a new deal and Ras himself is very satisfied with the final resolution. "I am just relieved and thankful to my management team, my attorney Nyanza Shaw, OGPR and all of the music press that showed me love and support these past few years. Now I am anxious to finally be able to pursue my passion, spread my wings and remind the world why Ras Kass is one of the greatest MC's of all time; dead or alive!" he says.

Fans can see Ras Kass on the Cypher Segment of this year's BET Hip Hop Awards this Saturday, October 13, 2007.

news 15 Years After The Ditty: Paperboy Is Back - October 11, 2007 By : Lil Jay

The year was 1992 when a young rapper named Paperboy came up in the rap game and made a name for himself with a catchy hit called "Ditty". The song did its job and crossed over to the pop charts and earned him mainstream success. In 1993 he released the album "The Nine Yards" which contained 10 tracks, including the double platinum certified single "Ditty". Rhythm D produced the album which was certified gold the same year. But once the buzz died down, it got a little quiet around Paperboy and it seemed like he was unable to follow-up with a second hit. The Grammy nominated artist released two additional albums on a smaller scale, "City to City" in 1996 and "The Love Never Dies" in 2004.

In 2007, 3 years later, a more seasoned Paperboy is still active in the rap game. He's scheduled to mark his return early next year with a new album entitled "Read All About It". Fans can expect the catchy hooks and party grooves that put him on the map, but can also look forward to sounds of the street and urban living as well. The album has production and/or appearances from King Tee, Kokane, MJG, Jazzy Pha, and of course Rhytmn D.

In usual Dubcnn manner, we have some exclusive tracks available for download. First off we're bringing you his latest single which is a Los Angeles anthem called "I Love L.A." produced by King Tee. Next up we have another cut from the new album called "Rollin'", followed by a bonus track from the "The Love Never Dies" album called "They On Me".

Paperboy - I Love L.A. Feat. Rizla
Paperboy - Rollin'
Paperboy - They On Me

Enjoy the songs and for more information you can check out his official website OGpaperboy.com and myspace.com/ogpaperboy.

news Heatwave is "Coming To America" - October 11, 2007 By : Adon

In a city known for beautiful scenery and a highly powerful and influential drug game, HeatWave is making a name for himself in the music industry. Vancouver is a flourishing city and with a nearly untapped hip hop scene and HeatWave is poised and prepared to compete on the Billboard charts and American mainstream stage.

This is one artist who refuses to be put into the Canadian Rapper mold and plans on making a serious impact on the U.S. music industry and abroad, all while representing Canada.

HeatWave is currently on the Killawatt Records roster that is owned and operated by the Canadian pioneering hip-hop group, The Rascalz. With RED1 as his primary mentor, HeatWave is blessed with the support he needs to nourish his rapidly emerging talents. Over the past year HeatWave has been fortunate enough to tour the world and as a result his music has become enriched with experiences and his passion and desire to succeed has increased tenfold. Killawatt Records has the leadership and resources for success and HeatWave looks to utilize these assets as fans can look forward to many projects and eventually a full-length studio album from HeatWave.

HeatWave is getting ready to come out of recording hibernation with his debut mixtape, "Coming To America: Live From Rain Drop City" due out later this month. The mixtape is sure to establish HeatWave as an imposing yet refreshing presence in not only the urban music genre, but also the music industry as a whole.

For HeatWave the mix tape is simply a stepping-stone in his game plan.

"I'm coming, America", HeatWave says chuckling, "No, I'm kidding, I really don't care about impressing the U.S.; I'm not trying to be a Canadian rapper who makes it big. I'm just trying to make it big, period. Hip-hop is all about what hood you from and if you ain't from Marcy, Harlem or Compton then you're invisible to people. I'm trying to be the talent that doesn’t need a famous hood to be certified and I think I can do that based on the quality of my music."

Heatwave "Ye Ain't Got Enough Green"
Heatwave "Nice as Me"

news B-Legit "Throwblock Muzic" Is "Block Business" Precursor - October 11, 2007 By : Rud

B-Legit has been a major player on the West Coast for many years as both a founding father of the independent rap scene and strong contributor to the Bay Area Hip Hop movement. In November, following a long hiatus, B-Legit will release his latest album "Throwblock Muzic" which is currently being finalised.

Having been a staple in the Bay Area music scene for years as a pioneer and business man B-Legit helped put his hometown of Vallejo and the greater Bay Area on the map.

"Hands On Them Knees" is the first single off "Throwblock Muzic" which has a total of 16 tracks. The album features appearances from E-40, Mac Dre, Clyde Carson and Levitti as well as production from Mike Mosely, Goldfingaz, Stix, Troy Sanders and E-A-Ski. Always one to help up and coming Bay Area rappers, B-Legit also features artists he signed to his label, Block Movement, on the album - including Taj-He-Spitz, Duna, 2wiceberg Slym and Harm from the Rich.

The concept for "Throwblock Muzic" is a bit different stated B-Legit in a recent press release; "I stay recording, so I have songs that I love but didn't fit on my last album and don't fit on my new album so I took my favorite ones, touched 'em up, recorded some new songs and came up with Throwblock Muzic."

"Throwblock Muzic" also features some tracks that were until that time only released on mixtapes, he has remixed them and added new artists to the songs. "Throwblock Muzic" is said to be only the first phase in B-Legit's Block Movement; "My last album hit before the Hyphy Movement broke, I'm known for that classic mob music so I fell back and went to work. I gave the kids a chance but now I have to step in and do what I do best. Throwblock Muzic is to hold you over until Block Business."

Throwblock Muzic will surely redefine why B-Legit aims to redefine himself as one of the legendary artists of the Bay Area when "Throwblock Muzic" hits stores via SMC Recordings on November 20th 2007. Block Business is then set for release in March of 2008.

Usually when we tackle an "On The Come Up" article we focus on an artist or a group however on this occasion when presented with an entire label packed with talent, it was only right to feature them as a collective.

Today we look at the Starr Media Group who, despite having been in the game for less than a year, are already well under way to making mainstream moves in year two thanks to their rapid impact on the underground circuit.

In this latest article we delve into S.M.G. as a multimedia entertainment company, find out about life-long friends and founders Ron "Ronnie Knottz" Clark and Andre "Dre Dinero" Davis as well as their artists and past and current projects. news Wu-Tang Reschedule "8 Diagrams" & Clear Beatles Sample - October 2, 2007 By : Rud

The long awaited and heavily anticpated new album from the New York hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan has just had its release date pushed back from November 13th to December 4th.

"8 Diagrams" sees the full clan reunited on record for the first time since 2001, thanks to previously recorded material from Ol Dirty Bastard, recorded before his death almost three years ago.

The album, which has been put together thanks to a one-album deal with Steve Rifkind's SRC Records - the same man behind the group's four previous albums on Loud Records - will also feature the first ever cleared Beatles sample according the their camp. This historic sample clearance is said to be one of the reasons for the delay.

We will have some new music from the group and the extended affiliates as well as an array of features over the coming weeks; stay tuned to Dubcnn and remember to mark December 4th in your diaries for the release of "8 Diagrams."
