In June we brought news that San Francisco-based imprint Voltiare had released a new four-track compilation of “modern funk” called “Private Function.”
The 12″ EP featured a standout synth-laced record from Los Angeles cohorts XL Middleton and Eddy Funkster called “Night Time Is Coming” that we dropped a video for.
Today we can bring you a brand new track and video from DubCNN alumni XL Middleton with “Keep It Funkin.” The record is classic XL where he delivers a modern take on the sound of 1990’s g-funk, the sound perfected by producers such as Dr. Dre, Warren G, DJ Quik, and Battlecat. Instead of resorting to outdated “gangsta” lyrical cliches, XL keeps the focus on the relentless funk of the instrumental, allowing a generous peppering of vocoder (performed by Middleton himself) to serve as the only vocals heard on the track.
This single release is designed to whet the appetites of modern funksters as XL prepares a full EP, to be released 2014. Currently it is released in 7″ vinyl format, and digitally via iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, and all other major retailers. Check the “Keep It Funkin” music video, directed by Diamond Ortiz, below!
